Season 4 is causing me a great deal of confusion. I really disliked the first few episodes I watched because there seemed to be a big shift in Hutch's character to a negative, surly guy, and there seemed to be very little teamwork going on with Starsky and Hutch. I was convinced the whole season held nothing that I could care about. And now, this is the third episode in a row from Season 4 that I actually liked.
It's difficult to say why I like this one. It has all of the elements that I usually don't like, especially the weird undercover personas that Starsky and Hutch adopt to infiltrate the fashion world. When they start getting into crazy costumes and silly accents, they usually lose me. This time, though, I actually went with it, and I didn't hate it. Maybe because they get to drop the covers and meet to exchange gathered info in their regular characters. There is enough smart dialog and detective work going on to help make the story hold together. Most of the way through, at least. I also thought Hutch's character was not so angry as he's been in other Season 4 episodes; he is different, but still a Hutch I can like. I thought DS seemed like he was having fun with it rather than just trying to get it over with.
The story in this episode seemed to fall apart at the end. I didn't see exactly what came of their mission or what evidence they managed to collect to be able to arrest their suspect. The Groupie aspect, for which the show was named, was equally vague to me. But, I still liked it and thought it would be worth another look.
While I was more comfortable with how DS was doing Hutch than I have been in some other episodes, PMG's Starsky is starting to get annoying. He is completely obsessed with getting EVERY girl that crosses his path, and all the ones that cross Hutch's path as well. I wish I knew who decided it would be a good idea to get Starsky and Hutch in competition with each other over girls - and everything else - so I could just slap him.
