By far the best superman the animated series episode

"Knight Time", is one of the best episodes of Superman the Animated Series ever, Superman learns that Batman/Bruce Wayne has gone missing and decides to head straight to Gotham to investigate the disappearance of his sometimes uneasy ally. What he finds is the deadly city overrun with crime as the Dark Knight's rogues are running rampant in the streets with no one, but Robin to stop them. So when the Man of Steel meets up with the Boy Wonder they both decide to put the element of fear back in Gotham City's thugs by having Supes don the 'ol cape and cowl. But no matter how much you dress up Superman in Batman's fear-striking attire, he is still same old Boy Scout underneath, which is why Robin has to give the Kyptonian superhero a crash course in detective work, fear and intimidation.

We get some classic moments as the "Bat of Steel" and the Boy Wonder meet up with Commissioner Gordon and officer Montoya who points out to Gordon that Batman, "looks bigger". We also get to see the "Super-Bat" go up against The Riddler, The Mad Hatter and Bane! And as the all-new Dynamic Duo continue to uncover the secret of Wayne's disappearance, Superman points out to Robin how all this sneaking around isn't really his style to which Robin replies with a smile, "What do you mean? It's half the fun."

Warning: Spoilers
My review of this series was harsh and I stand by it. The award-winning production team made the same mistake everyone makes when they take on Supe, they over-weighted the Lex factor, and, with the sole exception of the way "Young Lex" was handled in the TV series Smallville (brilliant riff on an old baddie) Lex is simply not that entertaining. In fact, the "snore factor" of Lex does more damage to Superman as a franchise than Kryptonite could ever do. This episode is a standout and near-flawless. The irony of having Superman pretend to be Batman in Gotham is (of course, inside joke!) that the production was handled by the very same team that basically nailed the Batman TAS formula to a degree that is unlikely to be matched in the foreseeable future, if ever. Remember the saying, "you can't go home again." Well, with this episode, Dini and crew went home. Beyond clever. Absolutely wonderful.

Talk about getting a lot into a half-hour show!!!

Warning: Spoilers
"Knight Time" is chocked full of guest stars, actors who had previously popped in various Batman villains, appropriate for a story about the missing Dark Knight. John Glover, the late Roddy McDowall, Henry Silva, and Paul Williams all reprise their stellar roles as The Riddler, The Mad Hatter, Killer Bane, and The Penguin, along with Corey Burton as Superman nemesis Brainiac. Each character is given some screen time and witty lines, courtesy of a great script by Bob Goodman.

Of course, the talents of Tim Daly, Kevin Conroy, and Mathew Valencia are on hand as Supes, The Bat, and Robin and each is experienced in assaying the role, making believable exchanges between them all.

One can't leave out Bob Hastings in his recurring role as Gotham City's Commissioner Gordon.

It is surprising how much is crammed into the twenty-two minute story, which is literate as well as action-packed.
