One for the Road
Prismark1028 January 2022
Paul Marino investigates a businessman who is involved in a crooked liquor licence scam.

Michael Callahan (Walter Matthau) gets the licences from an inside man in the licensing commission.

He sells it on with extortionate terms. This includes buying liquor from Callahan's companies.

In short anyone wanting to open a bar had to deal with Callahan and be on hoc to him.

Marino finds the bard quoting Callahan is no push over. He is ready to silence people who stand up to him. The inside man is no match for him either.

Walter Matthau was still doing television at this stage of his career. Four years after this he was an Oscar winner.

He is deliciously evil, a literate man who covers all angles. Maybe Marino has met his match.

The end of the line.

Michael Callahan has a neat business model, he sources liquor licenses, then extorts money from those that need them, charging them fees, and forcing them to purchase his supplies, Paul Marino investigates.

The best thing about this whole episode, was the villainous performance of Walter Matthau, he played the part brilliantly, there was a real menace about Callahan, but also a cool, subtle cleverness, someone who is more than a match for Marino. David Brian was excellent too.

It's a good episode, with some very interesting ideas, extortion, bribery and the whole concept of prohibition in general. I really liked that real feel of malice that you get here.

Nicely produced as always, I liked the camera work, some of those cars are exquisite.

7/10.

Liquor racket
searchanddestroy-12 July 2015
A bar's owner refuses to bend over racketeers and is killed, because of a alcohol license, a business that supposes to monitor all the liquor industry, from making to retailing. An illegal business that, from the outside, seems to be faithful to the law. So, our lead investigator McNally goes on crusade. He received a letter of the deceased before this latest was killed. The guest stars are here Wally Mathau and David Brian. Mathau is so exquisite as usual and the scenes between him and McNally are worth the look. I had rarely seen this tremendous actor in evil characters. So this performance is very rare. I'll keep it in my mind for sure.
