A second backdoor pilot?
stevekosareff8 July 2020
This last episode of Wagon Train appears to have been another backdoor pilot (as was the penultimate episode) for Rory Calhoun. It may have also been filmed in color but not broadcast as such.

Back when Charlie Wooster was younger

I'm guessing that the producers of Wagon Train thought that Frank McGrath and Terry Wilson who shepherded several seasons of Wagon Trains under two wagonmasters ought to have the last show to themselves. Wilson is only in at the beginning and the end of the episode as Frank McGrath tells a tale of a time he worked at a trading post long before he ever got involved with being a cook for both Ward Bond and John McIntire.

Back in the day Charlie Wooster worked at a trading post run by Rory Calhoun. Back further in the day Calhoun was quite a hellraiser, but in addition to the trading post he's also a preacher who prides himself on dealing fair and square with the Indians.

But one day Calhoun's randy brother Tom Simcox shows up and he wants to emulate the Calhoun of old. The whole episode is spent with Calhoun trying to teach him the error of his ways. McGrath is a peripheral character and a witness to the action.

No other Wagon Train regulars were here and I was disappointed that the series ended without any kind of close out episode. I guess the folks at Revue Pictures thought that the audience would just want to know that the Wagon Train would continue on.

Odd way to end this series

Was very disappointed with this last show. Most of the cast not in it. I've watched the entire series, and must say this final episode was not worth watching. While enjoying the series overall, there were certain episodes that were just awful. And cast members added, some disappeared, without a word in the script about them. But again, overall, a good series. Was also delighted to see so-many stars appear in this series, some 2 or even 3 times. Loved it when the series transitioned to color, and wondered why they did the last year in black and white. Finally, with all due respect to Ward Bond, I have to say that John McIntire did a much better job.
