I was a bit unsure where this episode was going, but I shouldn't have doubted the show, because in the second half it turns out to be another wonderfully sentimental and dramatic climax.

This show is so consistently lovely, it's a joy.

Warning: Spoilers
There is a great premise here that I'm sure a lot of young people can probably relate to. How do you deal with suddenly being in over your head academically? What if you aren't as smart as you thought you were?

But I think the show dropped the ball by having Kevin improve while still refusing to go to the extra help hours. I know this isn't an after-school special and it doesn't exist to teach kids The Right Thing To Do, but the truth is most people have to suck it up and find some humility when they're struggling.

It WAS nice to see Kevin tell his dad he wasn't okay, and to see his dad helping him study. We still don't see a lot of dads (on TV or in real life) helping with the non-fun aspects of parenting. At the same time, the average parent isn't going to be too much help with academics.

The transition from summer to fall is a tricky one. Like astronauts returning from space.

Warning: Spoilers
Math Class is about the start of the new school year, and Kevin's struggle in math.

The new math teacher's full on, giving pop quizzes and grading from the get go. Kevin's results are like never before and the pressure of being the only son with any academic expectations weighing on him. I especially love the family dynamic here. Best moment of the episode, Kevin looking through his test to find not one question he can even attempt, no use getting up and drawing attention to yourself though. Then telling Mr. Collins he need not grade it. The show has a great catalogue of songs during its duration, "You Can Close Your Eyes" by James Taylor here, in an excellent episode.
