In this episode the action and fighting were better. The acting was better. Everything was better than the series had offered prior to this episode.
They could have played it as trying to sneak into the church while the Alcalde's forces were held at bay by sanctuary, as did the Disney Zorro episode "Zorro Rides to the Mission". But that was only a small part of this episode.
They could have played it as "oh no, this may spill the beans on Diego's secret identity", but that was only a small part of the episode.
As in Zorro tradition, the guy who finds out Zorro's true identity dies in the end.
The fight near the end as Zorro gets a doctor into the church to Sir Edmond is not bad. The swash was buckling. The element of Sir Edmond watching the face realizing Zorro is Diego is very nice: the look on Edmond's face tells it all. The camera work as Sir Edmund dies, seeing Don Diego's pupils focus, framing one eye as he speaks to his mentor, is excellent.
The second season was going well with "The Wizard" and then this.
