In a godforsaken bar in the middle of nowhere – an all-girl punk band, Ms. 45, rip the stage apart with their anarchy spirit. Their performance impresses an enthusiastic fan who lures the girls into a trap, sedates them, and starts… customizing them. The four wake up with an axe, drill or chainsaw attached to one arm and are forced to fight gladiator-style, in an arena-style auto-wrecking yard for the amusement of the Emperor and his sadistic townsfolk. The women must now truly band together and use all of their talents if they’re going to get out alive.

After much thought, and taking into consideration the health of our guests and viewers, Nihon Media announced that Japan Filmfest Hamburg cannot take place this year as a traditional film festival – and will be online instead. Under the motto ‘Breaking Free – From Japan with Love’, Nihon Media will collaborate with Videocity to stream its entire programme of 70+ films in around 40 blocks globally from 19th of August to the 2nd of September.
The 2020 film programme features 70 current productions, from full-length feature films to experimental short films, including many German, European, and international premieres. Most of the films are shown in the original Japanese language with English subtitles. One special highlight of our programme is the gangster-ballad originally planned as the opening film for the 21st Jffh, “Paradise Next” (2018) from director and film composer Yoshihiro Hanno (“Flowers of Shanghai”). An atmospheric road-movie about the travels of three lost souls living on the edges of society,...

I consider Yoshihiro Nishimura the undisputed master of Japanese splatter, a man who had moved the genre forward into new and exciting paths through all his roles in similar films, which include Special Effects, Makeup, animation and directing, among others. The fact that he was going to revive 2005 “Meatball Machine” , where he was in charge of special effects, was one of the greatest piece of news for me, and the outcome justified my feelings totally.

Asian extreme horror is noted and adored for its absurdity and graphic content. For me, it can either be “Oh My God! This Insane Fun!” or “Really!? More of this!?”. That’s why admittedly, my experience with the genre (if it’s fair to pigeon hole these films to one genre.) is fairly limited. I feel it’s my duty as a reviewer to let you know I have never seen the original Meatball Machine from 1999, but I did watch the 2005 remake a fair few years a go (which this film is the sequel of.) and I gold my hands up that it’s a mere blur to me. From my basic research, it seems like Meatball Machine Kodoku is indeed a direct sequel,...

Twelve years ago, a small film called Meatball Machine by directors Yamaguchi Yudai and Yamamoto Yun'ichi made a bloody splash in the festival circuit. In it, you could see two star-crossed loners falling in love with each other, only for both to be infeested by alien parasites who use their human hosts as walking weapon platforms, the better to battle each other with. Eyes were gouged, limbs replaced with guns and knives, and gallons of blood geysered out of orifices old and new. Together with Iguchi Noboru's The Machine Girl and Nishimura Yoshihiro's Tokyo Gore Police (both released a couple of years later), it started a veritable wave of Japanese "splattergore" films, in which all rules with regards to taste, story or biological realism were...

Oregon’s newest film festival offers up a world premiere and a whole lot of other goodies.‘Boys in the Trees’ features clowns on the bikes.
The Timberline Lodge located at Mt. The newly formed Overlook Film Festival has announced it inaugural year programming lineup, including 37 films (20 features and 17 short films from 16 countries), along with a bevy of location-appropriate genre-themed parties, interactive events, and live experiences. This year, the festival will also fete director Roger Corman with their Master of Horror Award. The award “was established to honor a living legend who has contributed lasting innovations to the genre throughout a long career, inspiring new filmmakers for years to come.”
The fest is styled a 4-day celebration of horror that runs from April 24 – 30 at the historic Timberline Lodge located in Mt. Hood, Oregon, featured in Stanley Kubrick’s “The Shining” as the location of the infamous Overlook Hotel. The new festival comes from some of the same minds behind the now-defunct Stanley Film Festival, a similar horror-themed gathering based in a hotel in Estes Park, Colorado that inspired Stephen King to write his 1977 “Shining” novel.

With little over a month to go until Austin plays host to SXSW 2017 for another year, organizers of the annual showcase have announced that James Franco’s drama The Disaster Artist has been added to the stacked lineup.
Based on Greg Sestero and Tom Bissell’s non-fiction book The Disaster Artist: My Life Inside The Room, Franco’s passion project is set to recount the infamous story behind The Room, Tommy Wiseau’s widely-derided pic that has since gone on to become something of a cult classic. No release date has been set, but we know that the feature will be written and directed by Franco, who stars as the eccentric Wiseau, and features a cast comprised of Dave Franco, Seth Rogen, Josh Hutcherson, Ari Graynor, Jacki Weaver, and former Community star Alison Brie. Bryan Cranston and Zach Braff are among those set to cameo.

SXSW is mayhem. Mayhem, I tell you! And this year it will also screen Mayhem, a new film by Joe Lynch (pictured above). The midnighters program at SXSW has been announced and it consists of eight world premieres, including Joe Lynch's Mayhem, Nishimura Yoshihiro's sequel Meatball Machine Kodoku, Trent Haaga's 68 Kill, Adam Mason's Pig: The Final Screenings and more. The program will receive my primary attention during the festival in Austin next month, but as always, happy surprises will abound, I hope, in other programs that feature genre titles. Here are portions of the festival's official verbiage, edited for length:: "In this current political climate, genre filmmakers are more necessary than ever," said Jarod Neece, SXSW Senior Film Programmer. Festival top brass announced on Tuesday selections in Midnighters, short films and the Vr programme.
“In this current political climate, genre filmmakers are more necessary than ever,” said SXSW senior film programmer Jarod Neece. “They give us the chance to escape the horrors in our daily lives and spend some time in the dark, hallowed halls of the cinema.

Director Yoshihiro Nishimura (Tokyo Gore Police) has worked in horror as a make-up effects technician and director for several years, now. His latest production is titled Kodoku: Meatball Machine. Set for a 2017 release in Japan, the film's first trailer is almost nothing but bloodshed. Litres of blood are used as strange monsters battle each others. Bullets fire from breasts and chainsaws eviscerate the slow. While there is no North American release date scheduled, fans of horror can take a look at Japan's take on horror, here. Kodoku: Meatball Machine is a sequel. It follows the 2005 film, Meatball Machine. Both films deal with Necroborgs. Created by alien parasites, they turn their host in a murderous man-machine. Eihi Shiina (Audition), Takumi Saitô (13 Assassins), Ami Tomit (Tag) and Maki Mizui star in this latest film. More details, including a trailer, are available below, for this shocking title. Release Date: 2017 (Theatrical, Japan). Director: Yoshihiro.

For nearly two decades, Tokyo Gore Police helmer Yoshihiro Nishimura has been on the foreground of Japanese extreme cinema, both as a director and as a special makeup artist, gaining notoriety for his often hallucinatory FX work seen in such fest faves as Meatball Machine and Sion Sono’s Suicide Club. The Ninja War of Torakage marks a new path for Nishimura, as he blends the popular Japanese ninja genre with his crazy, visually driven style of filmmaking. The movie stars Takashi Miike regular Takumi Saitoh (13 Assassins, Ace Attorney) as the lead, with cult-actress Eihi Shiina (The Audition, Tokyo Gore Police) as Torakage’s evil master. Watch the trailer below.

Nakata Hideo of “Ringu” fame returns again to the supernatural with “The Complex”, following up on “The Incite Mill” and English language outing “Chatroom”, both of which were met with a generally lukewarm response. Written by Kato Junya (“Meatball Machine”) and Miyake Ryuta (“The Grudge: Old Lady in White”), the film revolves around creepy goings-on in the public housing complex of the title, attempting to liven up the usual J-Horror clichés with a few odd twists and quirky touches. After premiering at the Rotterdam Film Festival, the film was somewhat of a surprise hit in Japan, topping the box office for an impressive two week period. Former AKB48 member Maeda Atsuko headlines as Asuka, a young nursing student who moves with her family into the sprawling Kuroyuri apartment complex, site of a series of mysterious deaths a decade previously. Right away she notices something not quite right about the place,...

The Japanese certainly love their baseball, and Deadball is a bizarre comedic twist in showing how enthusiastic some can get. In a game that is supposed to be about teamwork, the theme of survival of the fittest is more appropriate.
As young Jubeh Yakyu (Tak Sakaguchi) shows in his practice round with his father, tossing the ball around is killer! Yakyu-san has this ability to supercharge his throws and those who try to catch them will not survive it. Many years later, the boy has become a violent offender, and while awaiting trial, he’s transported to a prison where he tries to blend in.

An early heads up for what we reckon is a must see movie in the new year. From the director of ‘Mutant Girl Squad’ (Tak Sakaguchi), and ‘Meatball Machine’ (Yûdai Yamaguchi) and the prolific Japanese production company Sushi Typhoon comes the splatter-tastic (yeah we made that up) Yakuza Weapon, debuting on Blu-ray + DVD Combo Pack and DVD February 7th from Well Go USA. Campy, dumb, funny, exploitative and incredibly violent...So that’s a tick, tick, tick annnd tick, in just about every box them. Synopsis: Stuntman-turned-director, Tak Sakaguchi, directs himself as a hard-hitting maverick who returns to Tokyo, only to discover his Yakuza father murdered, his family headquarters turned into a shady loan shop, and a powerful gang leader attempting to overthrow the entire criminal underworld! With rival gangs jacked up on “hyperdrug,” he must becomes a one-man, butt-kicking army – and things only get wilder when he loses an arm and a leg,...

In 2003, director Yudai Yamaguchi (Meatball Machine, Cromartie High School) and star Tak Sakaguchi joined forces to create Battlefield Baseball. A delirious, utterly out-of-its-mind affair, it cast Sakaguchi -- star of Versus and of the likewise luridly violent and goofy Yakuza Weapon, also at Fantasia this year -- as a gifted high school baseball pitcher drawn into a bizarre, post-apocalyptic baseball tournament to the death. It was bizarre, bloody, frequently hilarious and also a musical. And they had so much fun doing it, they're doing it again. Yamaguchi and Sakaguchi reunite in 2011 for Deadball, a film that is not a sequel to Battlefield Baseball but rather an entirely fresh spin on the same characters. Once again, Sakaguchi -- now 35 years old --...

People can see the anthology film Theatre Bizarre. This coproduction between Canada, France, Germany, the UK, the USA reunites Richard Stanley (Hardware), Karim Hussain (La belle bête), Douglas Buck (Cutting Moments), Buddy Giovinazzo (Life Is Hot in Cracktown), David Gregory (Plague Town) and Tom Savini, as directors.

The Fantasia Film Festival is by far my favourite film festival in the world and I’ve been impatiently awaiting some news of what films they’ll be screening this year. Considered the world’s largest genre film festival and running over three weeks long, the event is celebrating it’s 15th edition this year and the lineup is already pretty incredible. In the past I’ve seen some of my favourite films premiere at the fest and last year I wrote up a list of the best films ever screened at the fest which you can read here. This year Kevin Smith’s Red State opens the festival and directors Robin Hardy (The Wicker Man) and Richard Stanley (Hardware, Dust Devil) will be in the house to discuss the occult on film. The full lineup which includes 130-feature titles will be announced on July 7. For now here is the...

How the director of such cult faves as Battlefield Baseball, Cromartie High School, Meatball Machine and potentially Yakuza Weapon ever got himself involved in this project we may never know. Coming up this July in Japan is his movie about youthful friendship in Men's Egg Drummers. It just happens to star an overwhelming number of Gyaru-oh models. Actor Furukawa Yuki [far right] plays the protagonist Keita, the successor to a historic Shino shrine who has always led an ordinary life since childhood. One day, before the big annual moon-viewing festival, Keita's father (Itao Itsuji) suddenly falls ill, leaving Keita in charge of running the festival.Meanwhile, all of the members of the featured taiko drum performance are unable to participate, so Keita must quickly hold an audition for new performers. Expectations are a funny thing. Depending on which way you’re swaying, they can either completely ruin the movie you’re about to watch or turn it into one of the greatest cinematic experiences you’ve ever had. Because the Internet is a virtual bee’s nest of syrupy fanboy buzz, sometimes it’s hard not to get sucked in, especially when you’re dealing with films that tend to garner a huge cult following. And while I do try my best to avoid becoming yet another nameless victim of the soul-shredding, flesh-munching Hype Machine, sometimes I find myself tumbling helpless into its gaping maw. Insert putrid crunching sounds here. Takuji Kitamura’s melancholy 2007 romantic action flick “Negative Happy Chainsaw Edge” is a rare example of a motion picture greatly exceeding my admittedly lofty, unrealistic expectations. It was recommended to me by a friend who absolutely adores this current wave of extreme Japanese cinema,...

It looks like the Japanese have finally run out of (semi) sensible titles for their Ott horror kung-fu movies… We’ve already had such classics as Tokyo Gore Police, Robo-Geisha, Meatball Machine, Alien vs. Ninja, and now comes the epitomy of stupid title / over the top movie combos, with The Big Tits Zombie in 3D (aka Kyonyu Dragon), which is directed by Takao Nakano and stars Sora Aoi, Mari Sakurai, Io Aikawa, Risa Kasumi, and Tamayo.
Rena Jodo (Sola Aoi) is a stripper who just got back from Mexico and she has been offered a gig at a hot spring resort. When she arrives, she finds a deserted country town. There’s hardly anyone in the audience at the strip club and all the other strippers, including Ginko (Risa Kasumi), Maria (Mari Sakurai), Nene (Tamayo) and Dana (Io Aikawa) are all bored stiff. They don’t know what to do...

I approached directors Yoshihiro Nishimura and Naoyuki Tomomatsu’s over-the-top 2009 high school gore comedy “Vampire Girl vs. Frankenstein Girl” with the same expectations I possessed during my initial viewing of “Tokyo Gore Police”, “The Machine Girl”, and “The Meatball Machine”, which is to say I anticipated lots of arterial sprays, an abundance of low-budget special effects, and just a hint of a plausible storyline. What I didn’t foresee, of course, was something a bit sillier and a lot more endearing than the other like-minded films from this truly bizarre genre. I am both surprised, perplexed, and somewhat overwhelmed by the experience. My head is still reeling. Strip away the mounds of eviscerated flesh, the bottomless buckets of blood, and the inherent goofiness of the film’s absurd premise and you’ll discover a relatively simplistic albeit wholly demented romantic comedy: Two attractive girls from two completely different walks of...

Crazy, over-the-top Japanese action movies seem scientifically designed to appeal to someone with my warped cinematic sensibilities. “Tokyo Gore Police,” “Meatball Machine,” and “The Machine Girl” are all responsible for my current obsession with this sort of picture, though I’m sure “Robo-Geisha” and “Vampire Girl vs. Frankenstein Girl” will certainly do nothing to slow my endless salivation for extreme gore, outrageous martial arts, and, yes, Japanese girls beating the crap out of heavily-armed adversaries. “Hard Revenge, Milly: Bloody Battle” promises even more low-budget insanity, a fact which makes yours truly extremely happy. Am I sick in the head? A demented madman masquerading as a news aggregator? All of the above, my friend, and then some. Here’s the film’s all about: After Milly eliminates the Jack Brothers to avenge her family, a beautiful girl named Haru (Nao Nagasawa) approaches her for help avenging her own boyfriend. Milly initially brushes her off,...

Out of all the movies I’ve been salivating over for the past few months, Noboru Iguchi’s upcoming sci-fi action extravaganza “RoboGeisha” is quickly climbing to the top of the list. As a hardcore fan of “The Meatball Machine,” Tokyo Gore Police,” and “The Machine Girl,” Iguchi’s gore-encrusted cinematic insanity appears to have been scientifically programmed to be as compatible with my tastes as humanly possible. The first trailer comes complete with bizarre gadgetry, a metric ton of bloody violence, and some of the corniest special effects I’ve seen all month. Of course, all of this is meant is the most complimentary way possible, as I’m an unabashed follower of all things cheesy and Japanese. If I had a synopsis to post, I’d be more than happy to share it with you. Alas, there’s nothing to be found anywhere online, so you’ll have...

In many ways, “Tokyo Gore Police” represents a culmination of the recent trend of Japanese ultra violent splatter sci-fi cinema. The film was directed by Nishimura Yoshihiro, whose pedigree in the field is impeccable, having worked on the special effects for other recent genre cult hits such as “The Machine Girl” and “Meatball Machine”, as well as on Sono Sion’s haunted hair thriller “Exte”. Here, he extends his own 1995 short film “Anatomia Extinction” to feature length, resulting in one of the wildest and bloodiest cinematic experiences of all time. Having become a must-see cult item around the world, the film finally makes its region 2 DVD debut via 4Digital Asia in a 2-disc version, coming complete with interviews, making of featurettes and promo reels. The film is set in a futuristic Japan, where the fascist paramilitary Tokyo Police Corporation is locked in battle with the mysterious Key Man and his Engineers,...

I want to live in Japan. Right now!
A bit of a darling around these parts as of late, Japanese cult director and gore wizard Yoshihiro Nishimura has plumb run out of space in his warehouse in the Shibuya ward of Tokyo. So what do you do when you’ve simply got too much stuff. Give it all away! That’s right, according to his blog, between August 8th and 10th the director is inviting fans and volunteers to help clear out his warehouse. You like that bloody skull over there from Machine Girl?
