The Day That SpongeBob Died...
shr3dophile27 April 2018
Warning: Spoilers
I don't really care about the "Skill Crane" episode, it's mediocre as hell and doesn't really bother me that much. It's the sister episode "Good Neighbors" that grinds my gears. First of all, the plot is just simply terrible. It's also confusing considering Squidward had an episode once where he NEVER gets Sundays off. Apparently, the writers wanted us to forget about that episode and made what ever the hell this abomination is. Second of all, Squidward is tortured for no reason. Back then, there was nothing wrong with this considering he kind of deserved his punishment for being a bit of a dick. Nowadays, he's simply tortured for the writer's enjoyment. I just want to make it clear that making Squidward the ass of your jokes, does not automatically make them funny. Especially in dumb situations like this, Squidward was simply trying to enjoy the only day he gets off from work. Yet apparently, it's treating like a crime as Squidward is tortured throughout the whole episode. There are also a few attempts at jokes but they never seem to hit the mark. This makes this episode the first SpongeBob episode that didn't make me laugh. The thing that makes me cringe throughout the whole episode is just how oblivious SpongeBob and Patrick are. They only seem to realize they did something wrong when Squidward smashes his head through his door and yells at them. I never recalled SpongeBob or Patrick being this dumb either. Half of the scenes before the "Squidward-smashes-his-head-through-the-door-scene" are just failed gags where Squidward is basically the punching bag. First, Squidward gets blindsided by some paint that SpongeBob shot at a fence, which leads to a couple driving him to the hospital. Once again, SpongeBob and Patrick are completely oblivious to what is happening. This follows with a meeting which just turns out to be another failed joke. When Squidward comes back to his house, he finds that his foot massage was ruined once again thanks to SpongeBob and Patrick. The writers continue to try and tell jokes but they all end up failing and I can't help but feel bad for Squidward. After SpongeBob and Patrick are kicked out of Squidward's house, he kicks over the Sunday Paper that SpongeBob brought to him. In that stack, he finds a security system, so he decides to set it up. However, it does not detect SpongeBob or Patrick as an intruder because they came in to say sorry. In the end, the episode just loses all logic and Squidward's house kicks him out of his own home. What follows this is just a desperate attempt to be funny, the house then goes off to go on a rampage and destroy Bikini Bottom. I have no idea why it tries to destroy Bikini Bottom. It's not necessary to the plot and makes no logical sense. Then the episode ends with the house sitting on Squidward and Squidward getting forced to clean up Bikini Bottom every Sunday for the rest of his life. So basically, this was an episode where Squidward does nothing wrong but still gets all the torment. After this, the writers went on to make 18 other episodes with a similar plot. I call these type of episodes "Squidward Torture Porn". The name sounds pretty fitting if you ask me.

A Massive Downfall
clairegodfryd16 September 2012
Growing up with spongebob, the show will always have a special place in my heart... Well... At least the first four seasons at least. After season four was when I stopped watching. Just recently, I decided to watch a few of the newer episodes to see if I could fall in love with it again. I honestly wish I hadn't though.

The spongebob I remember was funny. This one is not. The spongebob I remember had lovable characters, and original stories. This one does not. I feel like I'm watching a completely different show. At first, I wasn't sure why the show was suddenly horrible, and I'm still not 100% on it, but I think I have Some reasoning as to why I no longer enjoy it.

1. The humor of spongebob used to come from spongebob, and the interactions with the world around him. Most of the episodes were just a slice of his lif, or a small problem he turns into something massive. While occasionally episodes would be more "out there" (Sandys Rocket, Doodlebob...) they still had the same feel to them. Nowadays, every episode has to have some massive story, that tries to be funny, but epically fails every time. Like Spongebob and the Big One, Atlantis Squarepantis, or any of those lame legend episodes. What makes things even worse though is that even normal episodes aren't funny anymore. Which brings me to my second point..,

2. It's just not funny anymore. I sat through dozens of episodes after season four, and I don't think I ever laughed once. OK, maybe I chuckled at a joke or two, but that doesn't compare to me rolling on the floor after watching Wet Painters. I can't explain this one though. I've heard that there was a writer switch after a certain point, but I'm not sure.

I'm sure this all sounds very negative, but trust me: seasons one through three, and most of four were AMAZING. Like, seriously. They all had multiple jokes that could get you laughing no matter how many times you've seen the episode. Some of my favorites are The Suds, Wet Painters, Nasty Patty, Good Neighbors, Skill Crane, Idiot Box and The Bully. I still watch these on Netflix when I'm feeling down. So, bottom line: an amazing show before its downfall. Don't bother with anything new. This show needs to get canceled and fast.
