The giant carrot
Prismark1016 July 2016
This is the episode from my childhood which I always remembered and is really the epitome of this phase of the show.

Our trio have whimsical discussions, talk about something in the present day that is not as good as it used to be, in this case the declining quality of British vegetables and introduces a nemesis in Lewis Bickerdyke who is known for his vegetable garden that he jealously guards. Compo and Clegg also have garden cane fights in French accents.

The crux of the episode is that the trio try to get one up on Bickerdyke and vicious dog by taking down a giant carrot and passing it off as something they grew.

This means Compo trying to get the carrot down and we have after they turned Bickerdyke green with envy, the said carrot in a barrow rolling down a hill and we also get our first appearance of a legless Wally Batty.

What is noticeable here is that Foggy is in on with the diddle with Compo and Clegg, after all he too had to quickly escape the dog. Foggy was not always the butt of the joke when he first appeared and he would usually have an incisive put down usually towards Compo. It was in his re-appearance in the 1990s where we got a lazy caricature version of Foggy.

Compo's shriveller
keysam-0261029 July 2022
Warning: Spoilers
The first part of the episode is largely dialogue, with Foggy bemoaning the decline of veg and Compo telling the other two about his "shriveller" - the facial expression he pulls out to show someone he doesn't think much of them. We are also treated to a sight of Clegg's kitchen, where he's doing his ironing. Not sure I remember seeing it before or since.

Anyway, it's all great stuff. Particularly Compo's explanation and then dismissal of the concept of infinity.

Meanwhile, out of doors, there's some brilliant play sword fighting between Compo & Clegg - another glimpse of the more assertive Clegg of old - and a terrific gag played on veg wizard Bickerdyke with a huge plastic carrot.

Very enjoyable episode.
