Partner in crime
coltras358 March 2023
Harold Strickland (Victor Platt), the Chairman of the Cool Kups drinks company, is murdered. Inspector Mann (Bernard Lee) of Scotland Yard is soon on the scene and is surprised at how quickly Strickland's partner, Frank Merril (John Van Eyssen) has moved into the Chairman's office and assumed control of the company. Mann quickly uncovers a tale of board room manoeuvring and a murder plot revolving around Merril, Strickland's adulterous wife Freda (Moira Redmond) and a keen to marry Australian lorry driver, Rex Holland (Gordon Boyd).

This thriller follows down a well-trodden route but it's efficiently made, well-acted and with enough suspense to keep you watching. Like usual Bernard Lee adds some gravitas as the inspector. The police come across as very efficient and on the ball.

Short and sweet and to the point.

Warning: Spoilers
Probably in the top five of the best entries of the 1961-1965 series of Edgar Wallace stories made as motion pictures for smaller theaters and released immediately to television as part of an anthology series. Of course, being one of the earliest, more care was taken in the script and especially character development, a great achievement considering that the film is under an hour.

When soft drink company founder Victor Platt is murdered, allegedly in a robbery, detective Bernard Lee interviews everyone at his company in an effort to weed out the top suspects. It's obvious that there's something going on behind the scenes at the company and in Platt's private life, with devoted wife Moira Redmond obviously unfaithful and partner John Van Eyssen making immediate changes. But they were there, so they didn't pull the trigger. A smart script keeps the viewer guessing, and some sordid supporting characters adds spark as well.
