It may seem like horror is mainly used to elicit fear and terror, but its ability to frighten and rattle its audience is actually rooted in an unlikely emotion: sympathy. Even the most cynical character can be found worthy of redemption if the circumstances which jaded them are deemed tragic, and even the darkest villains are made more interesting by exposing their insecurities. It is this gray area in which brilliant author Joe Hill seeks to explore the darkest depths of the human mind throughout his portfolio of work, and the result of his inquiries is a large stack of fascinating publications.

For at least the past few years, we have covered the Toronto After Dark Film Festival annually. Jeff Konopka attends the festival every year, and he usually brings some really good coverage back with him. I am always jealous when he’s there, because I’m listening to the footage that he has recorded, hanging out in a crowded bar talking with filmmakers, as well as other journalists attending the event. It sounds like a lot of fund, and I’d love to make the trip one year. Some of my favorite recent films were shown at Toronto After Dark. Cheap Thrills, Motivational Growth, The Machine, We Are What We Are, Resolution, The Battery, one of my all-time favorite films, Some Guy Who Kills People, and much, much more. Recently, the first 10 films for the 2014 festival were announced, and among them were some highly anticipated films. I will list them all below,...

Though the Jan. 5 episode of ‘The Bachelor’ was mainly a countdown to the new season, the show took out a good chunk of time to pay homage to Gia, who tragically committed suicide on Aug. 12.
On Jan. 5, the makers of The Bachelor faced their personal tragedy — former contestant Gia Allemand sadly taking her own like on Aug. 12 – head on, and the result was a truly touching tribute.
Gia Allemand Honored On ‘The Bachelor’
Bachelor host Chris Harrison led the tribute, saying that Gia had kept in touch with all of the cast and crew. A subsequent video clip that ran showed Gia herself talking sweetly about love, friendship, and life.
Gia Allemand: NBA Boyfriend Discovers Suicide
Then fellow contestants like Ashleigh, Jaclyn, Chris, Jackie, Ames, and Jenna gave testimonials, talking about how much they loved her, how much they’ll always remember her laugh, and how big her heart was.

The late Jesús Franco was, we are told, once named by the Vatican as being, along with Luis Buñuel, "the most dangerous filmmaker in the world." There's little evidence of that in early spy caper Cartes sur table (Cards on the Table, a.k.a. Attack of the Robots, 1966), but there is, by pleasing coincidence, a Buñuel connection or two. Franco's co-writer on this and other early productions was none other than the great Jean-Claude Carrière, the collaborator's collaborator, who worked with Buñuel on all his later French movies (as well as ghosting Don Luis's autobiography My Last Breath). The movie also features regular Buñuel star Fernando Rey among its seamy rogue's gallery of villains.
The movie stars craggy Yank abroad Eddie Constantine as a former Interpol agent lured back for one last job, but betrayed by his bosses who see him as a pawn in the game. Although the movie is light,...

The award-winning horror-thriller has screened at such festivals as the Palm Beach International Film Festival, Omaha Film Festival, AMC Kansas City Film Fest, and Chicago Fear Fest. It recently won Best Feature, Best Director, and Best of the Fest at Fright Night Film Fest in Louisville, Kentucky. The film will be screening at the Dragon*Con Independent Film Festival, which runs August 31st-September 3rd.
Nailbiter (review here) tells the story of a mother and her three daughters (Erin McGrane, Meg Saricks, Emily Boresow, Sally Spurgeon), who are on their way to the airport to pick up their father when they are caught up in a Kansas tornado. The family members are forced to take shelter in a seemingly innocent storm cellar but are trapped inside.

One in five. Things are not looking too good for our residents right now.
"Moment of Truth” had the gang travel to San Francisco for their oral boards and, boy, did they bring along some baggage. Let's discuss.
Exam Time. Meredith, Jackson, Alex, Cristina and April. That’s five. That means one of these residents is most likely not passing their boards. Is it Alex, who didn’t make it to his exam in time? Meredith, who was fighting a stomach flu? Cristina, the robot, dealing with her failing marriage? April, dealing with her lost virginity? Or Jackson, who’s lucky pencil broke right before the exam?
First Time Hookups. Another city, another state of mind. April decided to do the deed with the ridiculously hot Jackson Avery. First of all, it’s about time. There has been some chemistry between these two for a while. Second, how could you...

Thanks to "Ima Boss," his inescapable single with Maybach Music CEO Rick Ross, Meek has maintained a deafening buzz on the streets and impacted the game like no other Mc in his class. Mandy Bannon Mandy Bannon is the the lead actress of the recently released horror film Last Breath which was directed by Ty Jones and also starred Aaron Laue. Mandy Bannon turned in a dynamic performance in a physically and mentally challenging role as a wife whose marriage is on its last breath. She is token hostage, along with her husband, by a madman who forces the couple into an array of deadly and gruesome situations. In Last Breath, Mandy Bannon had to be appealing. She had to be resourceful. She had to cry. She had to be sad. She had to be angry. She had to be drunk. She had to run for her life. She had to deal with hundreds on top of hundreds of rats! She had to do it all! And she did it all admirably proving that she just isn't a one note actress, but an...

Last Breath Last Breath, which stars Ty Jones, Mandy Bannon and Jeff East, deals with a couple whose marriage is on its last leg. Surveying a warehouse type building that they just bought together, they are abducted by a trench coat wearing madman who forces them into an array of deadly traps and into psychological warfare with one another. Aaron Laue plays the antagonist of Last Breath. Aaron Laue's been in a variety of supporting roles or short films, but with Last Breath he takes it to an entirely different level turning in a chilling, highly effective performance that's a step up from the work that he has previously done. He turns in this performance of a broken down, sad and twisted villain that's at his wits end. To sum it up, Aaron Laue brings dimensionality to what could have been a one note role. He makes his character vivid and real.

A look at what's new on DVD this week:
"A Summer in Genoa"
Directed by Michael Winterbottom
Released by Entertainment One
Of the many films Michael Winterbottom ("A Mighty Heart," "9 Songs") has directed in recent years, you wouldn't guess the one starring recent Oscar winner Colin Firth as a father who must take care of his two daughters in the wake of a car accident involving their mother (Hope Davis) would be the one to have trouble making it to the U.S. But here we are three years after "Genova," as it's known in much of the rest of the world, was shot and it's finally arrived on DVD, a mix of supernatural thriller and human drama that's actually getting reasonably good reviews upon its delayed release. Catherine Keener co-stars.

If you actually ventured past your multiplex and watched horror films other then the uninspired "A Nightmare on Elm Street" remake, the strictly putting it in 3D for the money "My Soul to Take", the pointless remake of Let The Right One In entitled "Let Me In", the lifeless remake of "The Crazies" and other mostly bland mainstream horror releases that made up 2010, you would discover a wonderful world of indie horror films that stood out. George A. Romero showed that he's still got it with Survival of the Dead. Comedy and horror were brought together seamlessly (for once!) in President's Day & All About Evil. And plenty of other terrific independent films stood out. However, it wasn't all rosy for the independent horror films of 2010, as they also produced some highly publicized stinkers or films that finally came off the shelf after gathering dust for years. Still, for once, 2010 had...

Over here at Big Daddy Horror Reviews we are always on the lookout for the next up and coming horror talent. We predicted the potential of Jen Soska and Sylvia Soska's "Dead Hooker In A Trunk". Of course, that film set the indie horror world on fire in 2010. We noticed the sleek, polished, professional production values of Ty Jones's "Last Breath". Last Breath made its way into a contest with the AMC theater chain for distribution into 50 theaters. AMC Executives thought the film cost $5 million when in reality it cost $200,000. We noticed the star potential of Levi Fiehler after catching "Puppet Master: Axis of Evil". Director David DeCoteau (The Brotherhood) who has discovered such talents as Cory Monteith (Glee), Riley Smith (New York Minute), Bradley Stryker (The O.C.), Sean Faris (Never Back Down), etc., has predicted Levi Fiehler to be his next discovery. 2010 saw such a talented lineup of horror films,...

No word yet on the release date or if it is going to be released on DVD, Blu-Ray or both or what special features will be included.
Billed as Saw, but with a higher purpose, Last Breath details a husband (Ty Jones) and wife (Mandy Bannon), whose marriage is on its last leg, its last breath, who find themselves imprisoned by a sadistic killer (Aaron Laue)--forced to make choices that will ultimately determine their family's survival or demise.

"Imagine 'Saw' with a higher purpose". In director Ty Jones's Last Breath (2010), a husband (Ty Jones) and wife (Mandy Bannon), whose marriage is on its last leg, its last breath, find themselves imprisoned by a sadistic killer (Aaron Laue)--forced to make choices that will ultimately determine their family's survival or demise. Last Breath also features Jeff East of Stan Winston's Pumpkinhead in a cameo appearance. Ty Jones wrote the screenplay, directed and acted in Last Breath while Aaron Laue stars and produces. We had the chance to ask Ty Jones a few questions about Last Breath, here is what he had to say.
Who is Ty Jones and what is he all about?
I started making films 10 years ago with a dream to make movies that would change the world. I know that may seem idealistic to most, but I believe we have the ability to move,...

Director/writer: Ty Jones.
Ty Jones has written, directed, and starred in the Ministry Machine Production Last Breath, which won an Audience Choice Best Feature at the Omaha Film Festival. Ministry is also already working on another environmental horror film entitled Nailbiter, which is in pre-production. Last Breath is an excellent independent horror and fantasy film from Philadelphia, which puts a young couple in dire circumstances to heal hurts from the past. A cheating husband is shown the path to redemption in a film that crosses genres, while appealing to both genders, despite several disturbing scenes of psychological and physical torture.
Michael Johnson (Ty Jones) is a father of one, a semi-devout husband and a sales agent for a construction company. Failing in the sexual loyalty area of his relationship, Michael succumbs to the beauty of a company secretary and pays for this indiscretion with much torturous pain later in the film.

Director Patrick Rea dropped us a line with an update on his upcoming sophomore feature, Nailbiter, and laid four new stills on us as well.
The indie filmmaker has edited everything shot thus far and is now waiting patiently for late spring, when the snow will be gone and the leaves will be back, to complete the monster effects sequences and film pick-ups.
Nailbiter tells the story of a mother and three daughters who get caught in a Kansas tornado and are forced to take shelter in a storm cellar. They become trapped and discover they are not alone.
The film stars Erin McGrane, Meg Saricks, Emily Boresow, and Sally Spurgeon. It is directed by Patrick Rea, written by Kendal Sinn and Rea, and produced by Aaron Laue (Last Breath). The director of photography is Hanuman Brown-Eagle.

We've been waiting with bated breath, and yes, bitten nails, for further news about Patrick Rea's second feature film, Nailbiter, and our patience paid off today when Rea sent over the flick's second teaser trailer. From the looks of things, a storm is coming indeed!
Rea also provided the following update: Editing on what we shot over the five weeks in the summer has begun. We're on [filming] hiatus now till the spring [with] only about 16 pages of script left to shoot. We are aiming to have the film completely finished by the fall 2010. Post-production is going to take some time. We suspect the main factors contributing to Nailbiter's long post process are the monster effects sequences we've been promised since first hearing above the project.
