Unfortunately this movie adds nothing to the original except a few forced modern additions like a kiss between two men and an black and white moral which turns out to not really be that modern or feminist after all. Imagine managing to make the 2021 female character less feminist than the original while trying to do the opposite? Little to no character development, bland soundtrack and costumes, the humor from the original is nowhere to be found.

The movie is despite this overall probably an enjoyable movie for kids.

Classic but new
kosmasp31 August 2022
No pun intended - and quite obvious from the beginning. Yes we do get the classical story (which I assume you are aware of, but will not go into details just in case), but our main character (heroine) is not sitting idly when we first meet her. She also is not doing chores. No she tries to get back to where she is supposed to be, without being noticed (caught).

So yes, this version is a bit of an update. Do not think that this is "woke" though - it is always nice to have some extra spins on things. To get a bit of difference to other versions that exist. Acting wise this is fine - for what it is of course. Keep that in mind and be the judge if the movie is something you want to watch anyway.

Something Like Ash Lad, Pretty Good👍
KFstudios20092 September 2023
I can't complain about this movie, because I think this was very good. Especially made for kids, easy to understand and I think this is a good Norwegian adaption of Cinderella. It had great elements of picture, music and scenography in this movie. They focused a lot on the costumes, that make sense, because this is a Cinderella movie, so the dress and all of that has to be well done. And it was well done. The Bad Women that raised Cinderella was well acted, that women really looked evil with bad intentions. The prince was good, too, I think he did a good job at playing his role. Cinderella her self looked like a typical Norwegian Princess women, so I think the cast picked the right person. Besides the acting, the dialogues and the story was good build up, and the director did a good job. This is a movie especially made for kids. Most kids will like it, I think mostly girls, because princess and that genre is popular among girls. For older people, this is going to be a pretty basic movie, but if you want to watch a movie with your whole family, this can be a good movie, surprisingly good for Norwegian production.

Tasteless
felicitysaxophone28 December 2021
I am Czech , so obviously I grow up with the original Christmas classic and I was very excited to see the Norwegian version.

But I agree with other reviewers. This film remake was very disappointing and I really disliked the message of it. I understand that in 2021 there was an attempt to add more diversity reflecting the culture of our society now.. but ..

Prince in the film was not charismatic at all, no qualities or something interesting to offer, absolutely useless person. His friends are gay and are probably the only couple to experience true chemistry as they kissed at the end of the movie . Prince seems to fall in love with Askepott when she is dressed as a boy with a mustache. Ok. It's a modern version. But why he didn't kiss her at the end of the movie when basically anyone kissed?

On the other hand the female characters remain desperate for marriage as the only possible salvation of their existence. No remake at this point.

In the original Czech film, I liked Askepott's charisma and her relationship with animals , her strong personality. In the Norwegian version Askepott was so desperate to get married with someone she didn't have any chemistry basically..

Lovely remake
syltevik17 November 2021
In the original it was easy enough to see why the Prince would want Cinderella, but why she would be into him remained a mystery, at least to me. In this one they finally seem more balanced - she's toned down to be a bit less brilliant and quick, which helps, and they have a dynamic it's possible to believe in. They seem to truly like each other, which I never got from the first version.

I also love how this tough girl is still so utterly terrified by her step mother, which is very real, and the take on the stepsister as more trying to please her mother than anything else.

For me this hits home in a way the older version never did. That said, it's a movie made for kids first and the rest of us after, and as an adult I am trying to respect that lovely as this is, I am not the target audience for this, and that's okay. I still enjoyed it a lot.

Less than average

What a mess, the prince' best buddies kissing, Cinderella and prince not kissing. Prince adopted or mommy Queen had an affair..? Prince looks nothing like his parents and I find it hard to believe they raised such a moron. Cinderella and prince seemed to have nothing in common except horse racing. Nice horses and nice scenery, and the cruel stepmother (Ellen D. P) did a good job.

Embarrassing out of Norway
re-4963416 December 2022
I generally don't make reviews, but could not resist, because I like practically all the "cinderrella" variations out there. Including the Czech one.

90% of the dialogue and action is from the Czech version. All they attempted was to reshoot the old lines in a fresh way in fresh costumes in Norwegian surroundings. That's fine, I have no problem with that.

The problem is that the only actor able to deliver lines was Alfred. Even though that actor is a veteran, he was still struggling to do so in a way that conveyed a believable character. All the other characters were embarrassingly bad. Not a singel line had emotions or depth behind it. They were spoken as if they had not seen the script before, yet alone the old movie.

I cannot believe all the actors are that bad. So it has to boil down to the director. - A lack of experience from beginning to end.

There is no excuse for having an inexperienced bad director do this job, they knew it would sell well and they would turn a profit. So how could this happen? I really would like to know the decision making process behind it.

Lots of other bad stuff, like the reade music. Was the old music copyrighted? Remaking similar tunes was a horrible idea.. But all that is nothing compared to the delivery of the lines, the acting and theatre editing. Awful awful stuff.

2 stars for the horses and nature.

A bit disappointed :p
evennesja3 December 2021
I was a bit disappointed when I saw this in relation to the original from 1973. I do not think it was wise to have actors who were so different from the original. The humor was not quite there either. Maybe it would have been best if the country of origin had made this remake in English language?

There is in a way so much that is missing, that I do not think this will be a Christmas classic: p Sad since this could have been so much more: p.

Nope
Kai-76-18132012 November 2021
This movie have been hyped up so much now that when watching it I was bored. It can't compare to the original release. The acting is overdone and the dialog flimsy and without feeling. The only good thing about this movie is the scenery and locations.

a wonderful remake
aburiel29 December 2021
I was only very skeptical when you knew the original. But this remake is a success through and through. 10 out of 10 points. I highly recommend it. For big and small.

Waste of time
emmasly9 January 2022
There were only two things that I liked about this movie: the landscape and the horses.

But this does not save an otherwise soulless movie.

This is probably what you get when diversity and political correctness take precedence over acting skills and a decent script.

This entire movie is nothing but a sorry effort of a remake.

Not even a try
wasilijsaizev11 January 2022
Instead of resolving the Problems of the original mobile and using the new technical possibilities top create a wonderful Story, they focused on political tolerance Message. I think Norway ist not a country, which should teach others in tolerance. The actress who played the queen was the first person with a migration background, who was allowed to study on norwegish actor university.

SORRY
lena_monsen24 December 2021
This movie did not live up to the expectations at all. It's ok, but not good. The original is way better. Some of the changes are good, but some of the best scenes from the original are completly cut out. Children would probably like it, but for everyone else I would recommend the original. Not a novie I'm gonna watch again.

Bad acting, bad dialog, bad plot. No i do not understand why they had to make this remake. Totally waste of time. Watch the original. So much more feeling.

Loved it
bellatheonlystar10 December 2021
I think the movie was great and lived up to its expectations. The acting was really good on some of the characters, while others were maybe a little tame. As a horse person I must say that the horses were all perfect and the horse scenes were beautifully filmed. I prefer this one over the original because it feels more home and more relatable (as a Norwegian), but other than that I think they're both equally good movies. But this is probably going to be my new Christmas favorite.

Not a "new twist" at all
skpavlickova19 October 2022
Just a modern, poorly done ripoff of our beloved Popelka. Stop marketing it as a new twist when it's just a (shoddy) remake.

The more popular Popelka from the 70s is about the step daughter poorly treated by her step mother and her s.m.'s daughter. All the other manor servants love her. The carriage driver/handyman brings her back a twig with 3 nuts that booped him in the nose at her request. She accidentally discovers they give her outfits and some freedom and adventure from her life as a maid. It's quite funny, like when she mistakens the prince for a poacher and kicks his a$$ in archery. THIS is the movie I recommend watching, not a low budget remake.

God save the Norwegian film industry
fleurgude7 December 2022
The owl looks like a Furby on low battery, the queen is a mouth breather, and only one guy talks, like if he is from the past. In other words, it's really hard to settle with the scenery.

Most of the script has been copied from the Czech version. Though there are numerous adaptions to the story of Cinderella, these film makers didn't even try, they only made a Norwegian copy which was bad to be honest.

Sigrid, in the role of Cinderella/Askepot, is the only thing that charms. Her warmth is all there is to this cold script.

Norway is in a very romantic relationship with its own history, yet none of this would fit in anywhere. The language, the clothing and the culture is from separate times, even between characters, but it shouldn't have to fit into history: it's a fairytale.

There is nothing fairytale-like about it what so ever. Except, maype: the fact that this movie made it out.

NOT Appropriate For Children
shawnspradley-747201 January 2024
How is it appropriate for children showing two men kissing? Trying to 'modernize' the classic definitely spoils it. It is unfortunate that money, time, and effort was wasted remaking something that is not good for children to see anymore. The original is MUCH better and has more spirit. Even though it is from 1973, it doesn't feel dated. Unfortunately, this version of the classic is reflecting the degradation of our current society. The Roman Empire fell and the US will too and the moral fabric of our society is not changed off the current path. Hollywood is trying to destroy ALL vestiges of anything good and moral.

Definitely not the best Cinderella film out there!
zfischer_0522 October 2023
This movie has been sitting in my Amazon watchlist for over a year. I was just never in the mood to watch it, and couldn't bring myself to pay the rental fee to sit through it. When I saw it for free on YouTube, I though "what the heck... why not?"

It wasn't terrible, but I feel like it was a movie that didn't need to be made. The classic tale of Cinderella has been told so many times before, so if you're not able to surpass one of the countless versions that already exist... why even try?

I'm a huge fan of the Disney Versions and Ever After, but this did not live up to any of those. I feel like a lot of corners were cut... for instance, I'm pretty sure Cinderella's glass Slippers were just the Jimmy Choo heels that were created as a promotion for the 2015 Cinderella movie from Disney. Now, that's just lazy! The scenery in this movie was, admittedly, very beautiful. The snow covered mountains, Norwegian landscapes, and Nordic village were breathtaking, but everything else was just sorta... meh!

Maybe there was just something lost in the English dubbing... I'm not sure. It just didn't do it for me!

Short happy easy going story
ulven666-999-4933326 December 2022
Saw this for the first time today, and it was a great film that really does justice to the old one.

They have taken creative liberties that were well executed and tie well into the narrative.

Not to mention that the actors did a good job and were convincing.

The only partially negative points I have are that the close up between Cinderella and the owl at the last nut was a step before it became comical and the last scene where it became painfully transparent that diversity is artificial insurted to the scene.

I personally think diversity is great, but diversity itself for diversity's sake became a little too visible, and overshadowed the message that diversity is good.

The last 5 minutes lost a star or two, and not the best acting scene, but the movie was never surpose to be an Oscar drama movie.

Short happy easy going story, Worth your time.

Rubbish
masaropeter29 December 2022
The horses are the only thing that saved this film. Did they even have a script or was the whole thing just improv? I am a massive fan of the orginal film and wanted to give this remake a chance but I was just horrified the moment I pressed play. Nothing made sense, lack of continuity and zero charisma. If you're looking for something to watch with a bunch of friends and want to drink a shot every moment a cringe scene pops up, this is your poison. The sad thing is that I know that this story is loved throughout Europe and they ruined a chance to introduce it to the younger generations. What a waste of time.

After seeing this I wanted to kill myself
helenjo-3799831 December 2022
After watching the most unoriginal movie ever, I have come to the conclusion that it is not worth watching the whole thing ever again. It was way too similar to my countries original film from the year 1973 Tri orisky pro Popelku. I found out that they love the Czech original so much that they made "their own version". There are too many parts that are the same and the jokes are pretty poor. If you watch the original and then this version, you'll find out that the Czech version is waaay better, not only because of the jokes but because of the clothes and mannerisms that are used. If you watch the newer version it's basically the same.

A bit of a disapointment
vladimiramat28 December 2022
Warning: Spoilers
I watch the original Czechoslovak/german version each Christmas and was curious about how the Norwegians would remake it. I must say I am a bit disapointed.

The king and the queen look too young to parent the prince.

The castle from the outside looks too artificial and from the inside it lacks the greatness of a royal palace. In one shot it even seems it lacks a roof?

Cinderella's residence looks like some poor village in the middle of nowhere and I was asking myself why would the royal couple pay them a visit.

Hazelnuts are not even hazelnuts and one of them is spoilt?

No humor, poor dialogues, very average soundtrack without a melody I could remember. The original soundtrack is a classic with two very remember-able melodies. The new one is okay-ish.

Why didnt we see the beautiful norwegian fjords? The whole story is set in the middle of nowhere and it is a pitty.

Cinderella is a friend of a rat and an owl at the same time which is a bit bizzare. My first thoughts were: is she raising that rat for the owl to eat?

The story about the gay kiss seems rushed. I dont mind it at all but there should be more build up to it and in the whole story set in the 17-18 century I doubt it they would kiss so openly ( wasnt this punishable by prison at the time?) so I think they could have explained it better maybe with the prince declaring from now on it is allowed or something. With asian and black characters in the background it looked like diversity for the sake of diversity only.

Cinderella stops the prince from shooting an animal saying dont kill something you will not eat and then she shoots a bird...that she doesnt eat either?

The costumes and the fashion designer...well the costumes in the original were also a bit weird but I still liked them more, except for the Cinderella's ballroom gown. The new one is prettier, still the weil is too transparent so it is like Clark Kent with the glasses.

The positives: so much snow I loved it. Beautiful horses, the ballroom gown, dora getting a kind of happy ending. Great effects with the "hazelnuts", likeable Cinderella and the princ ( still he seems a bit dumb and a spoilt brat), Cinderella on the bridge at the end ( nice idea). Inclusion of the gay couple ( but they could have put more effort into it).

All in all for those who dont know the original it could be a nice fairy tale, but nothing great. For us who love the original...meh enough to see just once. The original with norwegian/english dubbing would be a better choice than a remake.

Three Wishes to improve this movie.
HorrorDisasterGuy-9061721 December 2023
I found this to be a alright adaptation of the story and adds little new with it. The story is your standard Cinderella version with a couple of differences to it. I do like how active Cinderella is with her horseback riding and knowing how to a bow. But it felt the movie could have given more development to her because she lacks any development and isn't that interesting. Even the romance between her and the prince isn't fully flesh out and doesn't have a chemistry between them. Speaking of the prince, he's pretty bland with little to offer of him and plays the standard prince you see in any adaptation. As for the stepmother, she mostly plays the typical stepmother you see in any adaptation and adds nothing to her. One thing that is different is that there's no fairy godmother in the adaptation, which is fine because it try something new with the source material. But how Cinderella got her wishes feels like a plot connivence when it happened.

One big positive is that the location and cinematography looks beautiful and amazing on the job the filmmakers put into the movie. It really looks gorgeous with it being in a snowy environment that gives some atmosphere to the movie and the different shots it presented here. Even the set design looks great inside current location of the movie like the castle looks great. I also like the music and dance sequence the movie presented since it executed pretty well.

The three wishes I wish to improve is to give the characters more development to them, have a better chemistry between Cinderella and the prince, and have the movie build with its new ideas.
