John Carpenter has announced his new album, Lost Themes IV: Noir, a non-soundtrack release arriving May 3rd via Sacred Bones Records. To build anticipation, the filmmaker and composer has shared the lead single, “My Name Is Death,” and its accompanying music video. Stream it below.
The upcoming album reunites the horror master with his frequent collaborators, son Cody Carpenter and godson Daniel Davies. A follow-up to 2021’s Lost Themes III: Weeping Ghost, Noir promises to be unlike anything the trio has done before — a stylistic shift that enhances Carpenter’s signature atmospheric synth with a distinctly “noir” vibe.
The 10-track project is a tribute to the film noir genre, with songs inspired by some of Carpenter’s favorite films. Rather than recreating these old soundtracks, the album translates the haunting, dramatic orchestral scores of ’40s-era Hollywood pulp into Carpenter’s guitar-heavy synth soundscapes. “Some of the music is heavy guitar riffs,...

It’s hard not to think of the 80s without thinking of Anthony Michael Hall. From Sixteen Candles to The Breakfast Club to Weird Science, he was part of many all-time great and formative comedies. As he grew we saw him take on darker roles. I’ll always love him as the mean boyfriend from Edward Scissorhands and even USA’s The Dead Zone. 2021 saw him take over the role of Tommy Doyle in Halloween Kills and made three words infamous. There’s even a new project that he’s apart of with Netflix titled Trigger Warning that sounds like a female version of Roadhouse. He’s consistently stayed working for over 40 years and has been impressive while doing it. And thankfully, he’s open to discussing it all.

Exclusive: Judy Greer (White House Plumbers) and Pete Holmes (Crashing) have entered production in Winnipeg on The Best Christmas Pageant Ever, an inspirational comedy that The Chosen‘s Dallas Jenkins is helming for Lionsgate and Kingdom Story Company.
Co-starring in the pic, based on the international bestseller by Barbara Robinson, is Molly Belle Wright (Deep Water).
The film centers on the Herdman kids, who are the absolute worst. They lie, they steal, they bully… and they’ve hijacked the town Christmas pageant. As the rowdy and raucous siblings force themselves into all of the lead roles, they drive the pageant’s director, Grace (Judy Greer), and other members of her family, including husband Bob (Holmes), up the wall. But through their misfit mischief, these unlikely messengers might turn out to be the ones to deliver the town’s sensational and moving portrayal of the true meaning of Christmas.

There's a lot of surprising things about David Gordon Green's "Halloween Kills," and not all of them are good surprising. There is, however, a very random, very weird, and very neat easter egg hidden in the movie that a lot of fans missed on first viewing: Bob Odenkirk's cameo.
Yes, Bob "Better Call Saul" Odenkirk (or Bob "Mr. Show" Odenkirk if you're an ancient one like yours truly), shows up in "Halloween Kills" ... kinda. You may remember the bar scene where the residents of Haddonfield gather to remember that awful night in 1978 when Michael Myers first returned home. They're alerted to a new series of killings via a news report that then calls back to those killed 40 years prior. You see pictures of Pj Soles as Lynda and her sweet departed boyfriend Bob, except the nerdy high school yearbook picture they used isn't the original actor John Michael Graham,...

Not that it wasn't already clear, but "Five Nights at Freddy's" has become a ridiculously big success story for both Universal Pictures and Blumhouse Productions. To further fuel that fire, with the money the video game adaptation pulled in over the weekend, it has officially crossed the $300 million mark at the global box office. All of this happening while "Five Nights at Freddy's" has been readily available to stream on Peacock at no additional cost to subscribers. A remarkable feat, to be certain.
"Freddy's" made $400,000 in its sixth frame domestically, per The Numbers. That now puts its running total at $136.9 million domestically and $163.4 million internationally for a grand total of $300.3 million. The film is certainly running out of gas and it probably won't add too much more to its total from here on out, though it still has a release in Japan set for February. Either way, this is a home run for all involved.

"Halloween Kills" might be one of the weaker installments in the long-running "Halloween" franchise, but one of its stars is anything but. The new book "Halloween: The Official Making of Halloween, Halloween Kills and Halloween Ends" includes a whole bunch of great behind-the-scenes stories about the new trilogy's production, including one about "Halloween Kills" actor Kyle Richards. Richards, a former child actress who is perhaps now best known as a castmate on "The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills," played Michael Myers survivor Lindsey in the recent David Gordon Green movie (a role she originated in the 1978 classic), and apparently went above and beyond when it came to the film's stunt scenes.
In one scene, according to Abbie Bernstein's book, Richards was tasked with smacking the seemingly invincible killer known as The Shape with a sack of foam meant to be a stand-in for a bag of bricks. The foam...

Variety reports that our friends at Cineverse’s Bloody Disgusting are expanding their multimedia horror brand with a new publishing imprint called Bloody Press – and among the first projects on the Bloody Press agenda are novelizations of the films Terrifier, Terrifier 2, and Terrifier 3. The Cineverse Podcast Network, which has a Bloody FM podcast banner, will also be launching a new podcast that’s dedicated to the Terrifier franchise.
Beyond the realm of Art the Clown, Cineverse will also be producing a new scripted audio series called Dead Space: Deep Cover, “which will follow a journalist searching for her missing sister who joined a Unitologist church.” That show is a collaboration with Electronic Arts.

John Carpenter, perhaps true to his name, is a workmanlike director. He doesn't possess any outwardly striking, signature aesthetic habits or camera tricks that one may call "Carpenterian." However, he still possesses a subtle mastery of the craft that is uniquely his. He simply knows where to place a camera to most effectively get a shot, shoots it, and moves on. He is practical with no pretenses toward being an artist. This is the man who, at a horror convention, was once asked how he felt about other filmmakers remaking his movies and running the risk of tainting his original artistic vision. Carpenter said that he actually loves it when others remake his movies because he gets money without having to work. His philosophy to remakes is one of "pay me."

With Five Nights at Freddy’s opening to a record breaking $80 million last week, $60 million more than its reported $20 million budget, any further box office dollars are really just icing on the cake. That is why this weekends drop, which looks to be near 80% for an estimated $17 million weekend, isn’t as bad of news as it sounds.
We always knew this PG13 rated video game adaptation was going to be front loaded as fans rushed to theaters to see a property they have enjoyed since its inception in 2014. Instead of the filmmakers trying to make a film that had mass appeal, they focused on those fans and by all accounts succeeded. That is why a second week drop off of this magnitude isn’t all that unexpected, we even predicted it in our Thursday predictions, although we thought it would be closer to the 70% mark than the 80% it is currently looking at.

In 1985, a princess, a brain, a jock, a basket case, and a criminal got together for weekend detention and came out of it changed people. The culture of Gen X was often defined by the stereotypes they fit in as teenagers, whether it was the truth of who they were or not. Nowhere was that more apparent than in the films of writer/director John Hughes. "The Breakfast Club" is a pivotal movie for that generation.
In the film, we spend the day with a group of kids in weekend detention. Claire (Molly Ringwald) was the popular rich girl whose parents didn't care about her. Brian (Anthony Michael Hall) was the brain who attempted suicide after getting a failing grade that didn't meet his parents' expectations (Hughes played his dad in an uncredited cameo). Andrew (Emilio Estevez) was the jock who got in trouble for physically abusing one of Brian's friends.

In David Gordon Green's "Halloween Kills," it's revealed that Michael Myers is responsible for the trauma of an entire town, not just a few victims. The survivors of Myers' 1978 rampage and the citizens of Haddonfield, Il in general are shown to still be dealing with the aftershocks of The Shape's evil, a condition that has lain dormant for 40 years until his reemergence in 2018. Myers' new reign of terror causes a mounting mass hysteria within Haddonfield, resulting in violent and erratic behavior from a mob previously made up of good people that can only be described as self-destructive.
The leader of that mob, Tommy Doyle (Anthony Michael Hall), has been particularly traumatized ever since he and Lindsay Wallace (Kyle Richards) were saved by their babysitter, Laurie Strode (Jamie Lee Curtis), on that fateful night in '78. So it's no surprise that in an earlier draft of the script for "Kills,...

For a lot of horror fans, October is their favorite month of the year, giving us 31 full days to watch even more horror movies than we do throughout the rest of the year, including films that are set on the holiday that ends the month: Halloween. Of course, the Halloween-set horror movies that get the most views are the slasher movies that share their name with the holiday. So with fresh viewings of every Halloween movie taken in, we have assembled a list: Halloween Movies Ranked, from worst to best. Check it out:
Halloween: Resurrection (2002)
Director Rick Rosenthal did such a good job emulating the style of John Carpenter when he made Halloween II, bringing him back to direct the follow-up to H20 seemed like a great idea. Who doesn’t love a good side character?
Side characters – or secondary characters – are usually those funny guys and gals who hang around our leads and give us moments of levity and brevity as the movie unravels.
More often than not, as the credits roll on these films, we sometimes end up loving the secondary characters more than the primary characters, as they’re many times the most memorable things from not-so-memorable movies. Even still, in horror, particularly slasher films, side characters are crucially instrumental components of rounding out these movies where the kills and death sequences take more of an immediate focus than the story itself.
Admittedly, remarkable secondary characters for the Halloween franchise may not be as apparent as other big slasher series. More often than not, the most revered and cherished characters are our favorite final ladies, Laurie and Jamie Strode, the caring Doctor Sam Loomis, or the malevolent Shape itself,...

David Gordon Green's 2018 slasher film "Halloween," a direct sequel to John Carpenter's 1978 slasher film also called "Halloween," famously ignored the nine "Halloween" sequels and remakes made from 1981 to 2009. The original film starred Jamie Lee Curtis as a teenage babysitter named Laurie Strode who ran afoul of a mysterious, silent masked killer named Michael Myers. In the original "Halloween II," it was revealed that Laurie was Michael's long-lost sister, a conceit Green would handily abandon for his 2018 update. Instead, Laurie was, 40 years later, still wounded by the events of the 1978 film, and had become a ragged survivalist, outfitting her home with booby traps and training herself how to use weapons in the off chance that Michael should ever escape the local mental institution and begin his killing spree again. Perhaps predictably, that very thing happens.
Green's "Halloween" ends with Laurie trapping Michael in a burning building, seemingly to die forever.

When John Carpenter made the original “Halloween” in 1978, it was just another horror movie in a long line of horror movies. But the blockbuster success of this low-budget movie, about a masked killer murdering babysitters, made “Halloween” a cultural institution. The film spawned legions of imitators and codified the slasher genre as we still know it. And yet the official “Halloween” franchise has often struggled to meet the standard of the movie that inspired the craze. Let’s look back at all of these classic (and not so classic) horror movies, and see how they stack up:
14. “Halloween: Resurrection” (2002)
The worst “Halloween” movie commits two cardinal sins. First, it nullifies the intense and satisfying finale of “Halloween H20” by striking Laurie Strode’s personal victory from the record; now, not only did she kill an innocent man instead of Michael Myers, but Myers destroys her instead.

Perhaps the most intensely discussed horror reboot of the 21st century is David Gordon Green's "Halloween." With a 79% on Rotten Tomatoes from critics and a 72% audience score, it seems like most of the intended crowd for the slasher legacyquel walked away satisfied, so Universal Pictures quickly put two more sequels on its calendar. Unfortunately, "Halloween Kills" was a drastic step down, earning only a 39% critics score. Sure, the audience score only dropped a bit to 66%, but when you're dedicated to the franchise, you're bound to be fairly pleased with whatever you get. "Halloween Ends" didn't fare much better, with just a 40% from critics, and a steeper drop to 57% from fans, officially taking it into rotten territory on both counts.
It's that last movie that has sparked some debate among longtime "Halloween" fans, with some appreciating the bold new direction that Green takes the franchise by making new character Corey Cunningham...

“Five Nights at Freddy’s” scared up $80 million at the domestic box office in its first weekend of release, above Sunday’s already-huge estimate of $78 million.
Universal and Blumhouse released the film, which landed simultaneously on Peacock. With Monday’s final figures, “Five Nights” has tied Disney’s 2021 Marvel adventure “Black Widow” ($80 million in theaters and $60 million on Disney+) as the biggest opening weekend for a day-and-date streaming release.
Though Disney reported the initial digital sales for “Black Widow,” which cost an extra $30 to rent on top of the monthly subscription fee, NBCUniversal didn’t share any tangible streaming metrics for “Five Nights.” However, the company claimed that “Five Nights at Freddy’s” has been the most-watched and biggest subscription driver on Peacock (which has far fewer subscribers than Disney+) since it dropped on Oct. 26. “Five Nights” is available at no extra charge to monthly subscribers.

“Five Nights at Freddy’s,” Universal and Blumhouse’s terrifying adaptation of the popular video game, made a killing in its box office debut with $80 million in North America and $132 million globally.
For a $20 million-budgeted horror film that landed simultaneously on streaming, these ticket sales would have been significant by the end of its theatrical run. In just three days of release, “Five Nights at Freddy’s” has already surpassed the entire global haul of 2022’s “Halloween Ends” ($104 million) and will soon overtake 2021’s “Halloween Kills” ($133 million) — which previously ranked as the biggest hybrid releases from Universal and Peacock. And unlike “Five Nights at Freddy’s,” those slasher films were sequels in a time-tested film franchise.
“Every studio should be taking note. This can be a game-changer, and another clear blueprint, for event-level horror films [and] game adaptations,” says Shawn Robbins, chief analyst at Boxoffice Pro, pointing to the communal appeal of horror films.

The theatrical day and date model has been one that has been scrutinized over the past few years as the world tried to figure out how to release movies during a global pandemic. Warner Bros famously saw their entire 2021 slate receive simultaneous releases on their HBO streaming service and felt the wrath of filmmakers such as Christopher Nolan. But every so often, that model proves not to be that big of a factor. For instance, this weekend saw Universal release the video game adaptation of Five Nights at Freddy’s to the record-breaking number of $78 million, $13 million more than we predicted on Thursday. That number makes it the second highest-grossing opening for a video game adaptation of all time after The Super Mario Bros Movie took in $146.3 million earlier this year while also breaking the Halloween weekend record previously held by Puss in Boots.

Updated: Universal and Blumhouse’s funhouse thriller “Five Nights at Freddy’s” slayed box office expectations with its scary-good $80 million domestic debut over Halloween weekend. The final number came in slightly above Sunday’s estimates of $78 million.
Those ticket sales are especially impressive because the horror film landed simultaneously on Peacock, the streaming service owned by NBCUniversal. It ties the record for the best opening weekend for a day-and-date streaming release with Disney’s 2021 Marvel adventure “Black Widow” ($80 million in theaters and $60 million on Disney+). It’s also the best ever for Universal and Peacock’s hybrid releases, beating the slasher sequels, 2021’s “Halloween Kills” ($49 million) and 2022’s “Halloween Ends” ($40 million).
Heading into the weekend, “Five Nights at Freddy’s” was expected to collect at least $50 million, which would have been a huge start for the genre. It now stands as the biggest horror debut of the year, surpassing the starts of...

It’s only been out for two nights, but “Five Nights at Freddy’s” is already off to a robust start at the domestic box office. Universal Pictures and Blumhouse Productions’ horror film spring-trapped $39.4 million in ticket sales from 3,675 locations on its opening day, a number that includes $10.3 million in preview screenings.
That’s an impressive figure for a release that is already available on streaming. Universal elected to drop “Freddy’s” on its platform Peacock on the same day as its theatrical debut. The studio employed the strategy with previous Blumhouse productions, the slasher sequels “Halloween Kills” ($49 million debut) and “Halloween Ends” ($40 million debut). “Five Nights” looks to be outperforming both of those films though, now projecting a three-day total of $78 million. With a lean production budget of $20 million, it’s already a winner.

Once upon a time, the Halloween box office belonged to Freddy Krueger. Now it belongs to Freddy Fazbear as Universal/Blumhouse’s “Five Nights at Freddy’s” is on pace to set a new studio record for Blumhouse with a $78 million opening.
If that figure holds, it will pass the previous Blumhouse record of $76.2 million set in 2018 by the revival of “Halloween.” Even if Saturday and Sunday numbers slip, it is set to more than double the record for the highest weekend total posted by a film on Halloween weekend, a record that previously belonged to “Saw III” with $33 million in 2006.
The adaptation of Scott Cawthon’s indie horror video game series also passed the record for the highest opening weekend set by a film released simultaneously on home platforms, topping the $49 million opening of fellow Blumhouse film “Halloween Kills” in 2021. Watch out, Mario, there’s another video game character hitting the big screen.
“Five Nights at Freddy’s,” the popular survival horror video game from 2014, is coming to theaters (and Peacock) just in time for Halloween. The movie picked up $10.3 million at the box office in Thursday previews.
The original video game spawned multiple sequels and spinoffs that have been hits with gamers and teens. The movie version, from Universal and Blumhourse, is aiming to capitalize on the “Freddy’s” fervor and open with $50 million this weekend, though some predictions put it even higher. It’s on track to nab the year’s highest opening for a horror movie, beating returning franchises like “Scream VI” ($44.4 million), “The Nun II” ($32 million), “The Exorcist: Believer” ($26.4 million) and Blumhouse’s own original “M3GAN” ($30 million).
Josh Hutcherson stars as Mike Schmidt, a new security guard tasked with watching over Freddy Fazbear’s Pizza, basically a creepy ripoff of Chuck E.

Five Nights at Freddy’s partied hard on its first night in theaters.
The latest horror offering from Universal and Blumhouse scared up a massive $10.3 million in Thursday previews at the domestic box office. That’s on par with New Line’s It: Chapter Two ($10.5 million), which debuted to a record $91 million in 2019, not adjusted for inflation. And it’s notably ahead of Blumhouse/Universal’s Halloween ($7.7 million), which also smashed records when opening to $76.2 million in 2018, as well as Halloween Kills ($4.9 million) and Halloween Ends ($5.4 million), not adjusted for inflation. It also trumped Jordan Peele’s Us ($7.4 million).
Freddy’s is tracking to open to $45 million to $50 million, a huge sum considering that the movie is being released simultaneously on Universal’s sister streaming service, Peacock (only paid-tier subscribers will have access). While Killers of the Flower Moon has the accolades and the star power behind it, perhaps late-October was an oversight from Paramount and Apple if they wanted it to replicate the kind of business Oppenheimer made this summer. Meanwhile, fans of the haunted pizza place game and audiences looking for some seasonal scares have been flocking to Five Nights at Freddy’s, even with the movie being available to stream on Peacock.
Perhaps a story may develop out of theater goers choosing to go see a movie at the cinema while it is also ready for home convenience. Killers of the Flower Moon‘s release doesn’t follow the day-and-date schedule, although...

More than any other genre in cinema, horror is notorious for never letting a franchise die. Horror movies can, generally speaking, be made on the cheap (especially compared to even a modest summer blockbuster) and the return on investment can be huge. That's why we've had 13 "Halloween" movies in 45 years. Inevitably, we're going to get a 14th movie and maybe even more, as we recently learned that a TV series set within the world of Michael Myers is in the works. If this goes according to plan, it will be the beginning of an entire "Halloween" universe. And at least one notable modern horror filmmaker believes that's probably not the right way to go.
/Film's own Jacob Hall recently spoke with "Terrifier" director Damien Leone in honor of the upcoming theatrical re-release of "Terrifier 2" next month. During the conversation, Leone mused about which classic horror character he might like to take a stab at,...

“Five Nights at Freddy’s,” an adaptation of the popular videogame franchise, is finally out this week.
A film version of the videogame has been in development for nearly a decade, beginning in 2015 when Gil Kenan, who directed “Monster House” and who just directed the as-yet-untitled sequel “Ghostbusters: Afterlife” (due out next year), signed on to direct and co-write. That began a fairly tumultuous production cycle that at one point saw “Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone” filmmaker Chris Columbus sign on.
But now it’s finally here, with a film directed and co-written (with Seth Cuddeback and original creator Scott Cawthon) by Emma Tammi and featuring animatronic characters created by Jim Henson’s Creature Shop. Blumhouse, the production company behind “Paranormal Activity,” “Get Out” and more recently “M3GAN,” is overseeing the film.
But how do you watch “Five Nights at Freddy’s?” Read on to find out!
When does “Five Nights at Freddy’s” come out?...

The Exorcist: Believer (our review can be read Here), the latest entry in the Exorcist franchise, is now available on PVOD – you can buy it from Amazon’s Prime Video at This Link – and to mark the occasion, special effects artists Christopher Nelson and Vincent Van Dyke have taken to Instagram to share full body images of the demon that is only briefly glimpsed in the film! Since these are full body shots and demons don’t wear clothes in Hell, these images might be considered Nsfw, so I’m just going to link to them. Van Dyke’s post can be found Here and Nelson’s is over Here. One image of the demon can be seen at the bottom of this article.

The final weekend before Halloween is upon us and the masters of horror, Blumhouse, are releasing the highly anticipated video game adaptation of Five Night’s at Freddy’s. The PG13 rated film is seeing a wide release on around 3500 screens with tracking currently having the film hit around $50 million while some see the film hitting as high as $85 million.
The biggest obstacle the film has to overcome is that for some reason, some studio executive at Universal thought it’d be a good idea to give this one a simultaneous release with their Peacock streaming service. So the big question is: will people pay the $10-$20 to see this in theaters or will paying just $5.99 for a month of Peacock be the route a lot of people take? I am not a big supporter of streamers, there are too many and most of them put out maybe one decent movie every three months.

The weekend before Halloween is set to be a good one for the box office with the debut of Universal/Blumhouse’s “Five Nights at Freddy’s,” a horror film based on the indie video game series that has blown by exhibitors’ expectations for ticket presales despite its day-and-date release on Peacock.
Independent projections for “Five Nights at Freddy’s” are predicting an opening weekend of at least $50 million. But theater owners who spoke with TheWrap say there’s huge upside for the film and the potential for a launch as high as $80 million.
Those optimistic predictions should be taken with a lot of salt — exhibitors were predicting $100 million-plus figures for “Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour” that the still successful concert film didn’t reach — but the consensus within the industry is that “Five Nights” has a good shot of beating the $49.4 million opening of “Halloween Kills,” which also opened day-and-date on Peacock in 2021.

Despite multiple red herrings, clues, and characters like Chris MacNeil (Ellen Burstyn) blaming Pazuzu for the dual possessions haunting The Exorcist: Believer, the entity responsible is actually a very different demonic figure from Mesopotamian lore: Lamashtu.
While the demon can be barely glimpsed in a quick flash on screen, makeup effects co-designers Chris Nelson and Vincent Van Dyke give a closer look at their stellar work via Instagram.
The Exorcist: Believer, now available on Digital, frequently makes callbacks and ties to the original film by writer William Peter Blatty and director William Friedkin. Moreover, it frequently alludes to Pazuzu as the one behind the mysterious disappearance, reappearance, and subsequent possessions of young girls Angela (Lidya Jewett) and Katherine (Olivia O’Neill). It seems reasonable that the demon first encountered by Father Merrin (Max von Sydow) might be back thanks to frequent references and calls for “Mother” and a seemingly intimate familiarity with Chris MacNeil.

Universal and Blumhouse’s haunted horror film “Five Nights at Freddy’s” looks to make a killing in its box office debut. The video game adaptation is expected to collect at least $50 million over the weekend, but analysts suggest the final number may be higher.
“Five Nights at Freddy’s” will open simultaneously on Peacock, which makes it especially impressive that it’s projected to land one of the biggest horror debuts of the year. Right now, the genre’s top debuts of 2023 belong to “Scream VI” ($44.4 million), “The Nun II” ($32 million), “M3GAN” ($30 million) and “The Exorcist: Believer” ($26.4 million).
Other than “Five Night at Freddy’s,” studios seem to be returning back to exclusive theatrical windows because it’s proven to be more profitable than hybrid releases. Although, its $20 million production budget means “Five Nights at Freddy’s” doesn’t have to clear a high bar to get into the black.

The Exorcist: Believer (our review can be read at This Link), the latest entry in the Exorcist franchise, didn’t go over well with critics or the general audience… which pretty much makes it a typical Exorcist movie, because none of these movies – other than the original The Exorcist and Exorcist III – are very popular, even among the horror crowd. It has managed to pull it more than $107 million at the global box office since being released earlier this month – and now it has been announced that it’s going to be reaching PVOD tomorrow, October 24th!
According to Syfy Wire, The Exorcist: Believer will be available to rent and/or purchase for $29.99 on PVOD services like Vudu and Apple TV. It’s up for pre-order on Amazon’s Prime Video at This Link.
