fond childhood memory
melskaya3 January 2008
I saw this way back in the early 70's in grade school. I remember it made me cry every time they showed it. I have always remembered "Clown" very fondly and have searched for it countless times over the years. For the times it was, and still is in my opinion, and amazing lesson. It seemed we used to see the same films... "Red Balloon", "Sounder" and "Clown". I saw a music video recently and the ending of the video reminded me a bit of this movie so it renewed my search. I am so glad I finally found it! Now I just have to track down a copy to watch again. I think it will most likely still make me cry. I wish today's generation could see the movies I did in school. These are wonderful messages.

First movie I remember crying over...
JAMessick15 December 2017
These foreign children's films were broadcast on the Saturday afternoon kids' show The "CBS Children's Film Festival" with Kukla, Fran, and Ollie (A female actress, Fran, and two puppets, Kukla and Ollie). As a 6 or 7 year old, I remember being emotionally overwhelmed at the bittersweet ending of this short film. Poor copies were at one time available on E-Bay, and I think it has been posted occasionally on Youtube. A very simple story, without one word of dialog, but very emotional soundtrack.

An industrious young boy searched for his best friend, "Clown" the dog through the streets of Montmartre, Paris.

I remember "Clown" from over 30 years ago! It took me a long time to track it down and I'm so glad I did. They used to run this short film on PBS in the 70's; I also remembered it vividly. It's very similar to "The Red Balloon". Deeply touching story and great Paris scenery. I highly recommend it; it has a valuable message for children but it is emotional so be prepared to discuss. I watched it with my daughter and 2 nephews and they were MESMERIZED. Also, quite a different lifestyle than children are used to now - very nostalgic for those of us that grew up before the age of hovering parents. Gilou Pelletier is wonderful as the main character, I wish I knew what happened to him!

Glad to see others remember this little movie.

I just got done watching a tear jerker movie with someone and we were remembering movies that made us cry when we were kids. I couldn't believe I remembered the NAME of this movie I saw in 3rd grade. (Clown) I am 40 yrs. old and still can't forget the movie itself!! I remember after the movie was over and before the teacher turned the lights back on, I made a mad dash for the drinking fountain in back of the class room and stood there pretending to get a drink of water for what seemed forever, trying with all my might to pull my self together. That movie still ranks as one of my all time saddest movies... as a kid... I wouldn't cry if I saw it now... I think.

Not bad until the very end....

Warning: Spoilers
Well, I was a fan of The Red Balloon, and recently acquired it on 16mm, along with another title called The Merry-Go-Round Horse, both of which are very similar to this style of film-making (simple story, no dialogue, which may have been more of a marketing ploy for export than artistic license). In fact, I thought I remember seeing Balducci's name attached to Merry-Go-Round Horse, but I don't see mention of it here...maybe I'm wrong or not looking in the right place.

Anyway, THIS title isn't bad, but the ending--oh my.

The spoiler: well, at the end, you find that the boy's dog ends up with a blind man. You're not really sure if that's where the dog originated from, but at the end of the film, you see the dog leading the blind man RIGHT INTO THE MIDDLE OF TRAFFIC! To top THAT, you see that the dog is pulling the man along, as if trying to get away from him! What a shame they couldn't have cast the part of the dog with a better dog actor! The ending had me in stitches!

Enchanting Film
mongo465384 March 2008
I saw this as a small child. More by accident than anything else, by flipping channels (all three) on TV. As long ago as this was, I remember how it made me cry. I am 46 today.

As a small boy I have never been move so emotionally by any film. Today the memory of this film came back to me for some reason and I remembered the name of this film even though I had not seen it since.

Very powerful, film makers of today need to watch films like this to relearn how to capture the essence of a story without special effects or bizarre twists.

I would recommend this to any parent to watch with their children. Especially if you like Dogs.

Heart-wrenching, beautiful, unforgettable
lmvagner21 December 2018
Warning: Spoilers
I saw this film as a child (I am now 62), and it was deeply seared into my memory - and into my heart. I will never, ever forget the emotion and heartbreak this lovely film drew out of me. Ever after, I was able to recall the scene of the young boy, staring at the photo of his beloved lost dog, weeping in utter despair......I am crying now, recalling vividly how that scene broke my heart, recalling how I wanted so much to comfort that small child, wanted to do anything in my power to help him find his lost best friend. I recall how, as soon as the film was over, I went to the piano and wrote out the plaintive score from memory. Even the music brought forth tears, then and now. I have avoided looking for this beautiful film all of these many years later because I simply couldn't bear to rip my heart in two again, but for some reason it came to mind again this evening and I looked it up. While a big part of me is thrilled to know it can be seen once again, I surprised myself in my inability (or fear) to watch it once more. I got only two minutes into the film and once again found the tears welling up in my eyes. I'm sure that had I allowed myself to relive the aforenoted scene of the weeping boy, I would have been an utter and complete emotional wreck. What can I say? My mind may have grown, my body has definitely aged, and life has toughened (and perhaps embittered) my outlook, but my heart still aches for this sweet child, the deep bond he shared with his dog, and the overwhelming power of love to bring us to our knees. I promise, this film will stay with you forever.

Truly a marvel

Warning: Spoilers
Like 'The Red Balloon', 'Clown' is another rare jewel not to let escape. And they are both french. However, 'Clown' is totally wordless. Even if some words were said, you wouldn't have to understand french to understand its story. For instance, 'The Red Balloon' has a few words but there's no need to know french in order to understand what is seen.

'Clown' is a wonderful tale of a sweet little boy and his beloved dog (named Clown), a tale that takes place in the streets of Montmartre, Paris. The kid is very fond of his four-legged friend and the dog is very fond of him too. But, no matter how friendly and loyal man's best friend is, every man's best friend has a free spirit and Clown decides to have a little adventure, which causes the kid to lose track of him. The kid tries his best to find his devoted pal, alone but also with the help of people whom he shows Clown's portrait, hoping someone can help him. He has no luck. He gets so heartbroken that he gets a runny nose from the tears he cries.

The ending is a surprise. It's a nice ending, although there is a minor flaw to it, but none of that can take away the perfection from this wonderful small film.

The cinematography is excellent. The Montmartre/Paris settings are simply très jolie and the gorgeous music suits in perfection both for the city and for the short film itself.

Gilou Pelletier is cute as a button and perfect as the little boy. Clown is a cute dog, loving and a great "actor" either.

As with 'The Red Balloon', 'Clown' is a time-machine, taking us to the good old days of innocence and happiness. This is a prime example of how to make cinema. They don't make anything like this anymore. This is from a time when things were made with quality, soul, love and care, now it's all for the money.

This should definitely be on Top 250.

the taste of childhood
Kirpianuscus29 December 2017
...in deep and complete sense. because it is wonderful trip across Montmartre looking for the best friend. because only a child could do the ways with so persistence. because it is one of short films remembering unique feelings and emotions and states . because it remains a gem. for its admirable simplicity. for its great characters. for the eyes of boy. for the end, so touching for a child, so easy to criticize for an adulte. short, a film who must see. for the moving meet with the childhood. and its special taste.

Clown & CBS Film Fest.
Digtoyman30 December 2008
I used to love to watch the CBS Children's Film Festival Saturday mornings in the 60's & 70's. hosted by Kukla Fran & Olie. They would show films Like "The Little Merry Go Round Horse", "Clown", "The Red Balloon" and many other films. Many films I had forgotten until I come across a bunch in the You Tube web site. I remember these old films then on TV and in school. It would be nice if all of these films could be restored and put on DVD's, so we all can enjoy seeing them once again on our TV's. New generations could enjoy seeing these movies. Good show Gilou Pelletier. For your fine performance in Clown and in The wooden horse movie and the other films you did.
