One of the most heartwarming tragic romantic stories in modern animation
withacauseg17 November 2020
This episode's writing balances the comedy with the melancholy of Cater Hall's always slippery romance with Shiera Sanders in a delightful way that concludes with a bittersweet ending that will leave you thinking at least for a couple of days. All in 11 minutes. It's not like the cliched and superficial teen romantic stories you're used to see in cartoons. This one is genuinely cute, touching and memorable. It's not afraid of using a different formula, because they know its message can be understood by kids, and praised by adults.

The mace is mightier than the sickle

Warning: Spoilers
Starting off: Karen not wanting to team with Carter doesnt make sense, it was never stated. A simple "why" to Diana could have heavily added context to the plot.

Majority of the episode is ok. You have Karen helping Carter find love, and while including an epic mace vs sickle air fight, something just ruins it all.

The ending. Hath Set being the reason Carter couldn't live with his love, caused him to not show up at all. While this might make sense so nobody does get killed by Hath, it could have been done in any other way (ie: Hath vs the girls. Even said by Karen) Just seems pretty bittersweet for a plot with an easier resolvable ending possibility.

Other than that, its decent. 5/10.

A really crushing crush

Warning: Spoilers
"#TheBirdandTheBee" is a very... unique episode for this show to say the least. In terms of my thoughts, this episode is very in the middle on pretty much every aspect. Back in 2020-2021 when I still liked this show, THIS was my favorite episode? For being another trope-y episode, this is certainly one of "best" ones.

One reason why this episode sucks is that its' beginning is really boring. Diana and Karen really just needed to talk everything out about Karen being with Carter and they could have easily solved the problem, but no, and instead I get this lovesick episode. The plot is rushed and feels forced due to the many conveniences, like how fast they find Shiera. It immediately causes Karen to go crazy with trying to help Carter get with Shiera which just reminds me of "#OneEnchantingEvening" even though "#TheBirdandTheBee" did it better. As a result of Karen, she ends up being the worst thing about this episode's first half for her invasive attitude and the tenaciousness of her matchmaking.

Whenever Hath-Set (I'm gonna call him Cyno) comes into to this episode is when I stop being bored to being confused, yet somewhat intrigued. The fight was mediocre and has a horrible ending because there is no definite winner/loser, Cyno just leaves in the middle of the fight because runtime and no Shiera, making it pointless filler. Yay!!! It's pathetic and really anger-inducing. However, this part is less focused on the romance, which is very out-of-place in a show like this (it has teenagers but it's an action-comedy), making it an upside. Which is honestly quite upsetting.

The ending however... makes the entire episode pointless, which is the biggest trend with this episode's second half. Carter doesn't even go to eat with Shiera because the only way they love each other without Cyno getting in their way is a distant relationship. It's very frustrating and annoying especially in this episode when there was nothing else in it to make me not just think of ending for ruining the episode even more than it was going.

This is the only episode that I don't like Karen in, and that's honestly really sad. Could have been way better with a rewrite or two, 4/10.
