Queen of Queens... in Space!
RaymanHortse14 February 2021
We got a lot of Cleopatra representations through the years but none like this one.

Cleo traveled a lot to let us see how her very far future is, it mixes perfectly the old ancient Egipt mythology and "magic" with sci-fi elements. Everything is familiar to our look but also makes them look very different. The design of characters is gorgeous, unique in each one but they kept the egiptian look on most of the humans and very vraiated on the aliens. The top is the music, they're mixes of egiptian music with mother beats and they fit well with the action sequences. It also uses a very smooth humor based on visual gags and sometimes in puns depending on situation.

But is not perfect, the rythm sometimes brokes making it feeel slower that it should be; the episodes are 21 minutes long but they feel a bit longer than they should be and also animation sometimes do takes steps back and looks clunky, also the only voice i don't actually like it's Brian's... it sounds way too squicky that it should.

It is not the perfect space odyssey, but it's very lovely to see that this kind of work are done, recommended watch.

Warning: Spoilers
If you have Xfinity, you can get early access to the NBC streaming service Peacock, which has this little show that is adapted from a 2014 graphic novel series. Let's break it down:

Animation and Art Style: The animation is decent. It has a nice color palette and unique character designs. It doesn't look 100% like the graphic novel, but it doesn't have to. It reminds me a bit of Turbo Fast (another Dreamworks) series. This is definitely one of the better-looking 2D Dreamworks shows. While I do enjoy She-Ra and the Princesses of Power, the animation can look flat at times on that show, which isn't the case with Cleopatra in Space.

Writing: The writing is spectacular. It stays faithful to the original graphic novel. It does fall prey to some teen cliches, but that's to be expected in a show about, what, middle/high school? It also balances slice of life stories with action, comedy, and adventure.

Characters: The characters are likable. Here we have Cleo, the main protagonist who starts out lazy and selfish, but grows to become a competent fighter. Akila and Brian are supportive of Cleo and yet have personalities of their own. Akila is the energetic one and Brian is the nerdy one. Altogether they make up a dynamic trio.

Music: The theme song is super catchy, and is reminiscent of Egypatian music, making it a win for me.

Enjoyment: Cleopatra in Space is an overlooked show with great characters, a compelling story, faithfulness to the graphic novel, and even LGBTQ+ representation, as Akila has two moms. If you don't have Xfinity, check it out on Kimcartoon!

A great setting with a terrible protagonist.
rustemkhafizov1 February 2021
I really wanted to like this show, I really did. I like its space adventures, the abundance of cat characters and Akila, who is the best part of the show. Those are all great and the show would have been awesome if not for its one giant flaw..

Cleo herself.

She is one of the most obnoxious, arrogant and reckless protagonists that I've ever seen in any series. And the worst part is that her numerous flaws are seldom questioned and she never learns a lesson from her constant screw-ups that put the people around her in danger.

She is a fish-out-of-water in the future she knows nothing about, yet has little interest in learning about it and ignores the rules and warnings offered to her by the people who inhabit this futuristic world, even if it's her own friends. The number of times she put people in danger due to her recklessness is hard to count as its present in almost every episode. Yes, she is supposed to be an entitled princess as per her background, but that doesn't justify her being rewarded for her poor behavior, not to mention her "chosen one" status and unexplained martial arts and marksmanship skills which put her above the rest of the characters, despite most of them being trained in combat.

The problem with Cleo is that she is given everything without having to work for it and she doesn't grow as a person throughout the show despite her many mistakes, her attitude simply remains the same regardless of how many times it puts her and the people around her in danger. It would be one thing to have a deeply flawed character in a story aimed at adults, but in a show for kids a main character like that is downright dangerous, as it creates a terrible role model for the kids to look up to.

An awesome cartoon more people should watch
bhermann-4060831 March 2020
This series, based on a 2014 comic series by Mike Maihack of the same name, has a simple premise: then-Princess (and future Queen) Cleopatra is transported tens of thousands of years (30,000 to be exact) in the future to attend an elite school on an Egyptian-themed planet and fight a space tyrant with her friends. Cleopatra, known as Cleo for short, is super sassy, reckless, careless, and cocky, as she adjusts to the future...and is the only prophesied hope for the universe. As one reviewer put it, this adventure focuses on the untold story of Cleo's teen years, figure out how she will get home, fit in, find out the identity of a spy sent to the school, and her mysterious powers. The music of this series is also really awesome. This justifies its current rating.

It's not bad, but . . .
johngerity6 September 2020
There are a number of cartoons for kids that parents can sit and enjoy with their children together. This is not one of them. It's not bad really. The character designs are enjoyable, the acting is very good, and for what it is the music is perfect. The problem is the direction, pacing, and editing where this falls short. It's not just that parts feel rushed and others linger too much. It's that half the time it feels like something really important was skipped over or cut. I've re-watched the first 2 episodes twice and each time I'm left waiting for a "2 days ago" cut-away scene that will explain what's missing, but it never comes. My guess is that while boarding and table reading this, whenever someone might have said "wait, how did we get here?" someone else responded "who cares, it's just a stupid show for dumb kids, they won't even be paying attention." And maybe they're right, but if they're expecting a show about teenagers to be watched by actual teenagers, they're in for a rude saturday morning awakening.

Fun And Exciting
blytheandferb-1096717 August 2022
It's a shame that this show lasted only 26 episodes. There's plenty to like. The humor is on point. The action is exciting. The characters are all fun to watch in their own ways. There's a nice mix between comedy, story, and sci fi action. If nothing else, at least give a movie to wrap up the series. It deserves more.

Give this Show a Fourth Season
ppaul-5243622 January 2024
I love this show Cleopatra in Space in the season 3 finale Octavian has finally take control of the Nile Galaxy and Octavian is actually Cleo's old friend Gozi who got corrupted by the Sword of Kebechet.

In season 4 I have some ideas like about how Cleo and her friends will save the universe from Octavian's forces, will Levista appear to Khensu and be together again, will Cleo ever return to the past and be with her family and how is Cleo and a golden lion connects to saving the galaxy?

So, we ask a favor to renew the series to Netflix to conclude the adventures of Cleopatra if she restores balance of the galaxy of her friends and return her back to her timeline. Also add Egyptian gods to the series because that will give viewers a chance to appreciate Egypt culture.

So Divorced from Historical Reality It's Almost an Unethical Mockery of "Egypt"
BabelAlexandria28 November 2021
The show itself is nothing special in terms of character and plot, though my kiddos were entertained by it, mostly for its action sequences, which are plentiful (though rarely resulting in death or serious injury, unless you count robots). My daughter had read the graphic novel series and noted numerous differences. She also found Cleopatra mostly annoying - impulsive, narcissistic, and uninterested in learning. In some ways like an exaggerated version of Korra, but far less appealing than, say, Adora, Kipo, or Allura. So not much to recommend the show or the protagonist, over all. And then there is the added issue of the inane exoticizing of "Egypt": beyond featuring pyramids, fake hieroglyphs, and Cleopatra herself, there is not even a remote attempt to accurately portray the ancient culture. Octavian, her mentor, was not Egyptian, and he was not an "Octopus." I could go on and on but the general effect is not to encourage interest in Egyptian history or culture but to present it as an exotic other which is merely a hollow shell of reality, and, more generally, to promote this treatment of different cultures.

Total fail. An abomination
1384 August 2021
First off, if you haven't read the book series, there's a pretty high chance you would think why is this series so popular, and second, if you have read the books, like me, you would be not only confused, but confused on the storyline. Most of it had nothing to do with the books, scenes that weren't even in the books, and the characters, are even worse than bad. Since when was Akila an alien, and since when was Brian a cyborg? Never, that's when. The only thing about the characters that was accurate was the cats, but that's it. The rest of the character flaws basically define themselves. Last thing, the books are way better than this show. I recommend reading them if you haven't already had your experience ruined by this show.

The Pathetic Princess of Egypt! 😡
a34trgv124 April 2024
Warning: Spoilers
A few years ago, Cleopatra in Space came on my radar for it's very bizarre concept. One of the most well known rulers of ancient Egypt is somehow a space warrior in the distant future? This had me more confused than intrigued and I wasn't sure if I wanted to subscribe to Hulu just to watch it. I eventually caved and subscribed to Hulu after canceling my Apple TV+ account and gave it a watch to see if I missed out on an overlooked gem. Oh brother was I HORRIBLY wrong! This is yet another misfire from DreamWorks' television division that throws in over 20 different ideas and not a single one sticks! From the abhorrent writing to the terrible voice direction, this show should've stayed in imprisoned in it's forbidden tomb!

Developed by Doug Langdale and Fitzy Fitzmaurice, this series was based on the graphic novel of the same name written by Mike Maihack. The basic throughline of the show is Cleopatra fights evil robots in space while trying to find her way back to ancient Egypt. That sentence alone is already litered with ideas that do NOT mesh together! Cleopatra? As in, the well renowned queen of Egypt during the Ptolemic Dynasty? She's fighting evil robots? And the robots are evil because...? And this takes place in the distant future? And in space? None of this makes any sense! And I know I'm gonna get that one comment that brings up Samurai Jack as having a nonsensical premise but a great execution, and my response is 2 fold. 1. Samurai Jack isn't based on a real person and 2. Samurai Jack showed the audience how Jack was sent to the future, why almost everyone is out to get him, and why he must return to the past. This is all because Samurai Jack has the one thing Cleopatra in Space only dreams of having: GOOD FREAKING WRITING! The first episode speeds by the origin to just throw her into the distant future, and while she's there, she's stuck in a generic high school with all the tired tropes and cliches! The world building consists of exposition dump upon exposition dump, all of prerecorded history conveniently wiped out, and Cleopatra having powers because Heaven forbid the story takes the time to hint at it before completely showing it off in the 3rd episode! It's all one bad joke, which is the lesser of 2 evils because the humor is Cringe with a capital "C!" It is nothing but a bombardment of toilet humor, lousy puns, explaining the jokes, and dull visual gags. There's even a moment where they put a joke in the middle of an intense action scene, thus killing any tension. Now I know how MCU detractors feel! This show was fighting a losing battle by not having a clear idea of what it should be about, and it only got worse in execution.

The characters are all varying degrees of annoying, and as such I hate every single one of them! Cleopatra, as opposed to being a cunning, seductive, manipulative ruler, is demoted to being an irresponsible, stupid girl who makes her problems worse! Her homesickness comes of as her whining like a 2 year old, her overconfidence makes her really stupid, and her nosey nature makes really annoying. Speaking of annoying, by Horus' blinding eyes is Akila a FREAKING CHATTERBOX! She goes on and on about unrelated nonsense, she doesn't have the spine to say no, and she never listens to reason! Did I mention that she never SHUTS THE FLOP UP??!!! Brian is the failed comic relief cyborg, Khensu is an uptight teacher, and Zaid is the generic love interest who, surprise surprise, is the freaking spy sent to capture Cleopatra. Then there's Callie, the show's designated spoiled brat! She has no legitimate reason to be in this show! None! She a rude, bossy, annoying, pampered brat that puts others down to make up for her own insecurities! This show already has so many badly written characters that her inclusion is utterly pointless!

The voice acting is very bad, which is unfortunate as they're all really talented in their own right. Lilimar Hernandez sounded flat and not nearly as believable as Cleopatra. Katie Crown sounds very manic and eccentric with a bubbly personality...as Izzy from Total Drama Island. Her performance as Akila sounds too similar to a much better character in a much better show. Jorge Diaz didn't sound as tech savy or enthusiastic as Brian as I would've liked. Sendhil Ramamurthy only plays Khensu as this stern cat and doesn't sound as enthusiastic when he's supposed to show his fun side. All the veteran actors were a treat to hear from Dee Bradley Baker, Kari Walhgren, and John DiMaggio. I was even pleasantly surprised to hear Steven Universe himself, Zach Callison, playa group of flies called Zuzz with a surfer voice. That said, I don't think Dee Bradley Baker's nasaly kid voice fit with Dennis, who's this large creature you'd think would be more baritone. This all comes down to really bad voice direction, something that's not often looked at but you know it when you hear it.

Visually, this show has some decent animation during the action scenes, but otherwise looks very stiff. DreamWorks and Titmouse collab once again to bring the animation to life and the result is a mixed bag. On one hand, the characters have really good designs with Cleopatra given a modern teenager look with an ancient Egyptian esthetic, the aliens having distinct desgins, and the attire looking really futuristic. I also think during the action scenes, the characters have very fluid movements and dynamic poses. All that said, the during the non-action scenes, the characters have very restricted movements and limited facial expressions. The backgrounds are well crafted and have a futuristic look to them while having some Egyptian esthetics. The problem is, though, often times the characters stick out of the backgrounds like a sore them and that takes me out of the illusion very quickly. The animation could've been the one saving grace of this show, but bad animation and art direction is holding it back.

This show is another weak link in the chain of DreamWorks Animation output! Cleopatra in Space is an atrocious cartoon that doesn't have a clue of what it wants to be! What we're left with is a show with abysmal writing, annoying characters, stale voice acting, cringy humor, and passable at best animation! This is such a jumbled mess of a cartoon that more than deserves the worst fate to bestow upon it: to be ignored and forgotten! Do NOT watch Cleopatra in Space! Spare yourself the headache and just watch Samurai Jack! It's every this show wishes it was, and so much more -.-

A show I used to like that just dried out overtime Warning: Spoilers
This show has awesome animation and a very creative concept (plus the sweetheart that is Akila) but has predictable episodes and "twists" with a disappointing finale. I have watched every episode and I really only grew to like Akila. I was starting to like characters such as Kephra but that all died whenever she was revealed to be a villain. Sometimes this show can be funny and have a good moral or two, but mostly it's just really predictable, strange, or both.
