The masks
marsu-potila14 November 2020
I couldn't stop cringing every time someone pulled off their mask for no reason or had it under their chin when others didn't have one on. Really annoying to watch them ripping a mask off like Rollins did when she was talking to the mother. Defiets the purpose of a mask and sends a bad example for anyone watching.

Really a bad way of handling the cirus situation by everyone neglecting the safety rules. I get it that it's hard to have the actors act with the masks on but damn, they could've just left the virus out the series if they handle it like this.

Big points to Peter Scanavino yet again for best acting. He's really one of my favorite actors currently.

What the h---...?
thiagosblancos14 November 2020
Really, SVU has never been afraid of tackling and discussing current issues but this socially/politically correctness... I mean, I don't even live in the US but trust me, there is racism everywhere. And you know what, minorities get to be racist too. We all do, we all discriminate at some point because we are human and we get to be horrible from time to time even if most times we don't go beyond the thought itself. But this episode felt SO forced... I mean, COME ON! It gets to the point where if I want to say something against how gays are, which I am too by the way, thank you, I have to clarify that first as to avoid a backlash.

Sorry, I was hoping for something else and I got a bit---no, not a bit, much disappointed by this show in a second. Sorry people, black lives matter, sure... but in the end, *all* lives do. I really hope SVU gets back on track.

Not the best season opener, but good
sbrien-606045 February 2021
Was put down by other reviews and lower rating, but the political views people are saying are probably from Republican conservatives...it was a good episode but just regular, not a great episode you'd expect from a season opener

Keeping up with the times
bkoganbing13 November 2020
This debut show of SVU in its 22nd season is the first acknowledgement of series television with the COVID pandemic. Most of the cast including the regulars are wearing the masks now. Not reallyu good for closeups, but it's the times we live in.

Captain Olivia Benson is on the hot seat with Internal Affairs after SVU arrests the wrong man for a sexual assault on a gay man in Central Park's Rambles. It happened a black man was first arrested and because he was belligerent, had some warrants and was not exactly a model citizen, still he was the wrong guy. The right guy laughs all the way out the precinct door.

All the name isn't mentioned the Black Lives Matter movement is uppermost in the writer's minds as they penned this story.. When ADA Peter Scannavino loses control of the Grand Jury, ham sandwiches will not be on the menu.

Nice beginning for a new season.

Welcome back SVU!
judyolsz13 November 2020
I am amazed that people don't want to see our favorite shows react to the reality we are living in. Hope the unhappy people can find something irrelevant to watch until Covid goes away. Maybe mid 2021.

We need to protect actors. You see no change in the police force in past 9 months? Okay, watch reruns, cartoons, or the few sporting events not shut out due to Covid.

A noble effort quickly turns ridiculous
zacdawac14 November 2020
Warning: Spoilers
The police, the hospital workers and the civilians all randomly put on and take off their Covid masks with no reason or rhyme. Olivia's son Noah is being honored at school when most New York children of concerned parents are being home schooled. Olivia is chastised for not doing a background check on a woman who's in Central Park with her little son. Even if the check had been done, the police computer would have shot back outstanding warrants, not bogus complaints the woman filed. The police are in trouble for taking a man into custody, without violence or incident, who was angrily resisting and had two outstanding warrants. The DA immediately files charges against this man, even though no one in the room thinks he's guilty. And finally (major spoiler), a grand jury is so angry at the police for arresting this black man, they refuse to indict a pompous, arrogant, privileged white man who admits to lying a dozen times and essentially brags about committing a violent crime against an Asian doctor.

Yes, this was a valiant effort to touch on some of the issues facing New York and the United States, right now. However, very little made sense and the episode was all over the place. Using the absurd and ludicrous to make your point often feeds the exact opposite argument. As a liberal activist in New York, I don't think anyone wants to see the police chastised for peaceful, justified arrests. We certainly don't want to see violent criminals walk because people are angry with the police. And Covid masks shouldn't randomly come on and off, in rooms with virtual strangers or in crowds.

Still relevant
jacierenee4 June 2021
SVU is repetitive to a point.. but only because irs derived from real events.. and the same things keep happening. I appreciate shows like this bringing current events into their narrative, helps drive it home..

The worst episode, the weakest story
azmogroupon16 November 2020
This episode is one of the worst, weakest and most repeated and predictable story of all 22 years of SVU. As an absolute fan of Law &order SVU and all Dick Wolf works, I have to say I am so disappointed to see such a weak story and act as the season 22 premire. I am sure we can't blame Dick Wolf for this, as we all know after all that happened this year, this show was about to be cancelled (by very irrational reasoning) following all talks about police reform etc (which i dont know what it has to do with this strong all-time favorite series). I am sure as some sort of deal, Dick Wolf had to compromise his strong geniune stories and somehow fit it to what some audience want to see! The story of this episode is very weak, predictable, and repeated. Nothing is wrong about including BLM etc in it, (as one of the strongest points of Dick Wolf works has always been so in touch with realtime events and the society at the time), but i think this episode was forced too much into this direction that it lost its point and genuinity. Dick Wolf has included police brutality and racism, Bias, wrong arrest etc in so many different episodes of this show in the past very genuinely, But I really dont think this episode was at all comparable to his past great works.

Why should these these issues be ignored?
Although it lacked an exciting plot, this episode explored relevant social issues well. It was not preachy. It was believable. I applaud the show, one literally called "Law and Order", for not turning a blind eye to the elephant in the room and acknowledging the need for change. Mariska Hargitay was very good. Perfect "white-guilt acting". It was refreshing to see some responsibility be taken by "the good guys", rather than the blame being shifted to an evil caricature.

Triggered a lot of viewers which is great!

It does what this show always does, reflect and represent what is going on in the real world. I love how it makes so many people uncomfortable to watch. That's the point!

Awful.
bighebeal16 October 2022
Phony and bigoted. Offensive. Heavy-handed does not begin to describe it. "Virtue-signaling" -- except that it does not signal virtue, it signals social irresponsibility and a desire to increase racial tension. It's one thing for TV writers to allow their political prejudices to influence their work, and that has happened on this series many, many times, but this was way over the line. Suggesting that someone who is resisting arrest and has multiple warrants out for him should not be arrested specifically because of his complexion is preposterous. This show was hate speech. Period.

"LAW & ORDER: SVU" has jumped the shark.

Everything I Wanted
MrsTheFrog13 November 2020
Warning: Spoilers
The complete disconnect between the fans of SVU who come here to write reviews and the fans who follow SVU on IG and Twitter baffles me. Most folks here do nothing but b*tch about the show being "too relevant" (?!) while everything directed at the actors and show producers is positive But, I digress.

This is the best season opener since probably the open of S17! The writers put their fingers right on the pulse of 2020 and then ripped the throat right out of it! Peter Scanavino and Demore Barnes' performances were so raw and real. It was great to see such unexpected tension between a unit that normally gets along.

The storyline was real, relevant, and heartbreaking all around. I'm so proud of SVU for being willing to stick their neck out in divided times and engage their characters in hard work and reflection. I was really impressed with them pushing Benson as a character to confront her own bias, and to bring that discussion into her relationship with Noah.

Just wow. Everything about this episode was exactly why this show has been on the air for 22 years. It stays relevant; it stays tough, and it doesn't shy from reflecting the best and the worst of the reality it is meant to reflect.

I really hope they keep the pace like this for the season. Bravo - I couldn't have asked for better!

It's a no for me
GinaTBA15 November 2020
Law and Order is my favourite ever TV show, but this episode felt way too forced. No problem bringing up the current troubled times we live in, but don't make your main character questioning herself, it ruins all the previous 21 seasons.

Topical
toddanthonymorgan15 November 2020
These negative reviews point to the very problem this episode is trying to address.

Anybody that feels like it was forced or contrived, or uses another word to describe their negative feelings on systemic racism being called out is likely part of the problem.

SVU Is Not Scared!
jyanes13 November 2020
Although many are bothered by the fact that the season premiere ripped stories from the headlines, in typical SVU fashion, the show is not afraid to tackle these sensitive topics head on. They don't choose a side or try to sway you in one direction. The writers of the show do a great job at providing viewers with different perspectives to the case and let them decide on their own in that gray area they are placed in. It was not a political episode, so do not let ignorant reviews make you think that. In fact, this was a very powerful and timely episode that was filmed during a pandemic and was still able to deliver great performances and a good quality story. By the end of the episode after having seen all the different point of views, you will definitely think again about everything that played out in the premiere. Outstanding start to a historic season!

Reviews made by whiny conservatives
chingston29 March 2021
All the reviews on this episode are made by white conservative individuals. I'm happy to see that Law & Order isn't afraid to put what's happening in america on screen. Conservatives are getting scared these days. Why? Because now they see themselves as the villains in their favorite shows. They used to think they were the heroes and "Patriots" but in reality, they are the perps

News flash for all the softies in the review section, no one complained about the show using Epstein, or Weinstein as a plot line, but all of a sudden it's a problem that L&O is using real life to script an episode lol.

I did enjoy the Karen on the grand jury complaining about the Karen in the park without a trace of irony. Good talk.

Total trash. This show is labeled crime drama and not political controversy. Leave politics to the news please. The last year was all controversial, stop adding more.

Everything seems so unfair.
lizmea1 January 2024
Everything seems so unfair and so real.

I remember the O. J. Simpson case where people got so angry that everyone was acting and thinking ironically and irrationally.

And I also believe we all have micro- or macro- racism inside and that we all struggle not to show it, which is described in the episode as well.

By the way I'm Asian and I think some reviewers' got a good point: Dick Wolf's staff themselves have many Asian Americans or Asians but the actors don't include many Asians and even if they do, they still are very FOB stereotyped.

Anyway I really love the show and I'm still a big fan!

I just love how Olivia still tries to reflect and grow.
