And So The Endgame Goes Into Motion
Gislef8 November 2020
Warning: Spoilers
I suppose that "Underneath" finally pulls together all of the threads. Kthara has left Victoria's body, but found a new host for herself and her son, Basar. It still seems like a long trip to a small destination. Did we and the production staff need seven episodes to set all this up?

Especially when some things didn't get set up. So demons possess humans through the mark, but they can also possess people by slapping a little mini-demon on their backs? That's convenient. Maybe if the production staff had spent some time establishing that. And it raises more questions than it answers. Like how did demons possess the first human? Did a little mini-demon make it to the Earth realm? Did someone perform a ritual to let a demon enter into their body sans mark?

There feels like there's a whole backstory here about demons, that it's getting glossed over. Eight episodes in, and we still don't know any of it. I don't expect to know everything, but some of it is crucial to the storyline. If Kthara can use a mini-demon to put Basar in Damion's body... shouldn't we have had hints of that before now? Or did I miss that? And there's still dropped plotlines that I'm not getting. Like what happened with Spivey in episode 1 when he got grabbed by the vault door or whatever the heck it was. Was he possessed by a demon before that, when he released the two mental patients? Or did the door put a demon into him? When did the door release Spivey? Was Basar in Spivey when the door grabbed him? Or what?

That's what I mean. We get episode after episode of the Helstrom family troubles. And Damion and Amy moping around. "Underneath" finally gives us some backstory on Damion, which seems like it's 3-5 episodes later than it should be. I don't think I'm completely dense, but it seems like the writers aren't explaining some key plot points very well. Maybe I'm disgruntled that Wisdom and Uy aren't in this episode. Lemmon is good, but even the banter between Ana and Hastings can't make up for the absence of the other two.

So "Underneath" does set up what I assume is the endgame. Gabriella is going to have Kthara's child, which presumably has some significance. What, I don't know. I guess we'll find out in episodes 9 and/or 10. Since we don't know how demon reproduction functions, it's all pretty meaningless right now. Kthara already has a child, Basar. Why does she need another one? Kthara keeps saying that she wants to live again, but she seems to be living pretty well in Gabriella now. What else does she want, and how does her plan achieve it?

I'm sure the production staff will pull it all together in the last two episodes. But it seems like they're making it up as they're going along. Maybe the clues are all there, but it seems so wide open that they could justify anything based on the vague bread crumbs that they've dropped so far.

But that's just my opinion, I could be wrong. What do you think?

It is picking up in intensity near the end, but some of the storyline decisions are just baffling to me. Overall the show is missing the mark.
