Episode 11.14 titled "The Rotten Core" is focused on the Commonwealth arc. The premise for episode 14 reads: Maggie, Lydia, and Elijah help Aaron and Gabriel on a rescue mission. In the chaos, Negan finds himself watching over Hershel. Sebastian coerces Daryl and Rosita into pulling a heist. I think the editing and pacing was perfect in this episode, some of the best, with some great transitions. Jim Barnes & Erik Mountain penned the script for 11.14, the overall writing was brilliant and the dialogue felt right. Overseen by Angela Kang, the writing for this episode is consistent of the previous episodes in Part 2, as it's written by the same people who wrote the previous episode it's the same quality and I would say the episode is as good. But actually even more action in this and the zombie kills looked phenomenal. The episode uses the big budget wisely, making it brilliant both technically and the acting and so on, the camera work are brilliant and it's visually a great episode, an overall impressive production.
Marcus Stokes directed 11.14 "The Rotten Core" and the direction was brilliant, there are so many great scenes in this episode and there's not one single bad performance throughout the entire episode. The cinematography is once again breathtaking and incredible, just right for the show, the way it was shot and so on, simply brilliant. The sets were detailed and perfect, and so are the art and production design. Superb sound design and a musical score both gripping and dramatic. It's one of many things on the technical side of things that the show succeeds perfectly with.
As this was a direct follow-up to the previous episode which ended with suspension and with many characters in jeopardy. The best performances were Jeffrey Dean Morgan as Negan, Norman Reedus as Daryl Dixon, Christian Serratos as Rosita Espinosa, Lauren Cohan as Maggie Greene and Jason Butler Harner as Toby Carlson. The performance that surprised me the most were of Kien Michael Spiller as Hershel Rhee, for an child actor he truly showed his potential.
"The Rotten Core" has lots of things that fans of The Walking Dead will like. Angela Kang is truly giving the Commonwealth arc a lot of depth and I'm liking it a lot, Part 2 continues to be amazing and we're getting closer to the flashforward. This episode feels 100% like a TWD episode, not saying that the Commonwealth heavy episodes doesn't, but for the non graphic novel readers, 11.13 and 11.14 is more similar to previous seasons and for a good reason at that as it gives us viewers something fresh but also an episode that furthers the Commonwealth plot. I'm sure this is an episode many will like and if not for the acting and story the episode is telling. Negan returning after these months (in the story) made us question how he have changed and I won't spoil anything but I like where Angela Kang is taking the character. The confrontation between Negan and Herschel worked so well with me and hopefully everyone else too. I'm stoked to see more of Negan but also much more of Maggie, Lauren Cohan is continuing in giving her best performance as Maggie Rhee. The acting range on her is really high and I just feel like this darker version of the character fits the show quite well. I also want to write something about the sub-plot regarding Daryl and Rosita as they go on a heist mission for Sebastian Milton and you can easily say that this is unnecessary for the overall story, it's a reasonable argument, but let me persuade you why it makes sense in the story and the character. Sebastian is arrogant, spoiled and overall a really big douchebag. It shows us the current situation with him and there's a lot of character development between Daryl and Rosita but mostly Mercer. The events in the previous episode and this one doesn't exist in the source material, but for the show, it fits so well as it expands on the theme of corruption and overall expanding the Commonwealth arc. This was in my opinion, a perfect TWD episode.
