Feline fun

'Puss in Boots' is a lot of fun as a story. It is slight, but it is very memorable for its hugely entertaining titular character and the very clever climax. It is no surprise that it has proven to lend itself well to animation and audio books, if not quite so much feature length live action. Had no doubt that Rabbit Ears Productions would adapt it well and Tracey Ullman was an interesting choice for the role of narrator. Have found that a lot with the company's literary adaptations, but almost all of them proved themselves to be good fits.

Rabbit Ears Productions manages to adapt 'Puss in Boots' very well, it is on the most part very well done and great feline fun with many great elements. Was a little more mixed on Ullman and feel that there were better narrators for the Rabbit Ears Productions adaptations and certainly of the "We All Have Tales" series (a truly fine one with a lot of gems) that 'Puss in Boots' is part of. It is definitely recommend but not quite my idea of an essential.

Other than Puss in Boots, a couple of the other characters are bland with too little to do. The obvious exception being the villain that Puss in Boots outsmarts so cleverly. When younger, 'Puss in Boots' was one of the few Rabbit Ears Productions adaptations where some of the prose was a little too advanced and complicated and as a young adult that is a reservation of mine still.

Especially with Ullman's delivery. Ullman is far from bad, she was clearly having a huge amount of fun and is very entertaining to listen to, at her best like when voicing Puss in Boots she was absolutely hilarious. For me though there was no need for the accent, which is a little overdone and gets in the way of understanding some of the vocabulary.

Faring much better though are the visuals and music. The visuals are very vibrant yet elegant in colour and the characters are very interestingly shaped (like the oval heads). The music has a characterful contemporary sound while also having a lot of sophisticated charm. Puss in Boots is wonderfully crafty and also extremely funny, carrying the adaptation with adept ease.

While not all the writing works, much of it is enough to make 'Puss in Boots' one of the funniest adaptations Rabbit Ears Productions ever did. One of my favourite lines being the rabbit's when Puss in Boots is playing dead. The story does have great liveliness and is charming, with an exciting and tense climax as ought.

Concluding, very well done on the whole. 7/10.
