Where is the continuity?

Warning: Spoilers
To start out, this episode isn't so bad for a Jar-Jar centered one. It made sense for Palpatine to send Jar-Jar and he was tolerable. Also, the interaction between Obi-Wan, Anakin and Dooku was great, as was Hondo.

However, there are some plot holes. First of all, it's odd that the episode starts with Anakin and Obi-Wan being drugged, while at the end of the previous episode, they switched their drinks and actually the pirates got drugged. Secondly, it didn't make sense for Obi-Wan and Anakin to attempt to escape. Why didn't they just wait around for the Republic to arrive? They couldn't have known about Jar-Jar being sent and the pirates being betrayed, so they could assume the Republic would come with the ransom for Dooku. All they had to do was stay there. Dooku would be captured by the Republic and the war would be as good as over. They themselves could be freed later.

By attempting to escape, they risked losing Dooku, which is what happened eventually.

The Gungan General

Despite the possibility of being labeled a hater, I once again have to say that this episode would been preferably better had they not included Jar Jar Binks. To watch him fumble his way to success has never been enjoyable, and it still isn't, despite it happening in a show that I really love. The rest of the episode was quite entertaining, seeing the captured trio attempting over and over again to get out of their captivity in smart ways. That was good. Unfortunately, the episode just had a bit too much childish humor and that seems to be the weakest element of this show. The show was still in its early stages at this point and the potential was infinite. It went away from this kind of episode in the later seasons, and personally, I was glad that they made that decision.

The First Truly Great Episode(s)
henry-plantagenet-0422 January 2017
Warning: Spoilers
Warning: This is a review for both this and the previous episode "Dooku Captured," as such it contains spoilers for both. I was a huge fan of this show in the past, and have started revisiting it now. One of the things I noticed was that the first season is actually one of the weaker ones, certainly containing some strong episodes (The Malevolence Trilogy, The Lair of General Grievous) but also a few serious duds (Ambush, Duel of the Droids). This pair were the first two episodes I watched, and I think some of the best in the first season. There are serious improvements in the animation, the leg movements seem much more fluid here than they did in past episodes, and the proportions are in better equilibrium. The dialogue really works here, with one-liners that are legitimately funny and not cringe-worthy like they were in several previous installments. This the first time Skywalker and Kenobi have really been able to banter together, and they're terrifically written, with Matt Lanter and James Arnold Taylor clearly enjoying themselves in the roles. This is the key to the success of these episodes, they are character-based and the story grows out of these characters and the way they act. It is still a little roughshod here, but in future seasons this will be ironed out to some impressive story arcs. The episode also features the introduction of Hondo Ohnaka (brilliantly voiced by Jim Cummings). Given the role that Ahsoka will later play, I cannot say that he is the first great character to be introduced by "Clone Wars," but at this time he is much more interesting than she is, though she will surpass him in future seasons. The creators must have sensed something about him as well, for he returns in every single subsequent season, and it's always a pleasure to hear that voice. These two episodes are not perfect. The presence of Jar Jar Binks is irritant (B.J. Hughes may not sound like Ahmed Best but he is equally annoying in his own way), and I can still not comprehend the strange way Count Dooku's face was modeled. This sequence however is a huge step forward and augurs the things to come.

Space Pirates Part 2
A_Kind_Of_CineMagic27 April 2020
I feel like this two episode long adventure is basically an excuse to put Anakin, Obi Wan and Dooku into a situation where they all end up captured and chained together so that they have to work together. That is fine as an idea for a fun interlude in the Clone War adventures and I think they went for a similar scenario to Return of the Jedi where Jabba the Hut has Luke, Han and Chewie at his mercy but I just think these two episodes were not done very well in certain aspects.

My first problem with this episode is that there is a dreadful bit of editing between the preceding episode and this one which creates a plot hole. Anakin and Obi Wan were given drugged drinks in the previous episode but were seen switching them so they drank drinks given to two of the pirates instead. Yet this episode begins with Obi Wan and Anakin awaking in a cell having been 'drugged'! How were they drugged when they switched the drinks?! Very poor edit.

My second issue is that I find the idea that Dooku, Obi Wan and Anakin combined should deal with their escape attempts a lot better and it feels too contrived that they keep failing but still are allowed enough chance to try again only to fail again each time.

The third issue is that Jar Jar gets involved in this second part of the story and, as usual, is an unwelcome aspect with his silly pratfalls and accidental heroism etc.

This had some great banter between the captured Jedi and Sith as well as the good Hondo character and some harmless fun escape adventures but overall, due to the flaws, this was the weakest episode of Clone Wars up to this point. The good aspects stop it from being a disaster and it is mostly harmless fun, especially for kids, but it has some poor scenes.

My rating: 5/10.

Too many roundabout plots
thegreendrinker25 January 2024
This episode really demonstrates the problem with early Clone Wars- a lot of these plots flirt with going somewhere and then don't. Most of the episodes this season do not present characters with conflicts that force them to demonstrate who they are. Everyone is put in philosophically, morally, and emotionally comfortable situations that do not force them to develop. There also continue to not be any closure with different antagonists because we know they survive and/or remain uncaptured in future canon. General Grievous and Count Dooku, especially, keep being teased as possibly being defeated or captured but because we know they won't be, I don't understand the point of these plotlines. I know the show, especially earlier on, was very episodic but I feel like you could have made these bouts more entertaining.
