Flat Bike Tires Are Tacky
DKosty12318 April 2011
Warning: Spoilers
The guest cast on this show is one guy who heads the bike club. With the regular cast, that is all we need. The episode starts with the Hubbards & the Buells on the sofa watching television. They turn on a news cast that says that Americans are getting "too fat and out of shape by sitting in front of the television every night. Most Americans can't climb a set of stairs without being winded," says the newscast.

This gets Herb & Roger upset when Eve challenges them to run up and down the Hubbards stairs. Both of them do it, but both are gassed after doing it. Eve then says it is time for them to get an exercise program. Eve does a funny routine putting Kay through the paces and then their newly wed kids come over and tell them to join the bicycle club with them and ride bikes on week-ends. To try and get close and be nosy with their kids, Kay & Eve agree.

Then the complications set in and before you know it, the in laws are lost and stranded in the Mojave Desert on a bike club trip. Overall this episode is OK with Eve Arden getting the best script but all of them doing OK. Even though there are bicycles in the show, there is not really as much physical comedy in this one as in some of the other episodes.

Eve and Kay learn that exercise doesn't involving lifting a fork with cake on it to their mouths.

Warning: Spoilers
"But wait, Kay, there's more!"

One set of exercises isn't enough for Eve and Kay to get in shape, and they end up with Roger and Herb and the kids out in the middle of the Palm Desert on a weekend bike ride. It all starts with Roger and Herb running up the stairs, and barely back down again, although Roger's is closer to a crawl. It becomes obvious to them that they are terribly out of shape. "After all, bicycling is a youngster's game", Roger says in objecting to the trip to Lancaster, just as a couple the age of their parents go by on a bicycle built for two. It's up at 5 AM to get out to the desert before it gets too hot, and the women can barely function let alone get on a bike. Shoot, Roger can't even get his kickstand up, passed by the same elderly couple before he even takes off.

It's one of the funniest brief moments when Eve and Kay do a session of facial isometrics, being caught by Jerry and Suzie with their faces set in a way that makes them hope they don't freeze that way. For an obvious studio based set, the desert here looks pretty realistic. This is an episode where everything that can go wrong does go wrong, and Roger doesn't make the situation any better by mentioning snakes and scorpions. There's more hilarity when the foursome try to spell out help with their bodies. Once again, it's very little of Jerry and Suzie, only seen at the beginning and end and briefly in the middle, with an amusing revelation about how Jerry and Suzie found them. A clever plotline with lots of amusing moments makes this an above average episode.
