SHANNON – Zendee Report – 1961

This is the first episode of the P.I. series, SHANNON. The series lead is played by George Nader. Nader does most of his work for the "Transport Bonding and Surety Company. His boss at the TBS is Regis Toomey. The gimmick in this series was Nader's tricked out Buick Special. It was equipped with cameras, tape recorders, hidden weapons, mobile phones etc. The series ran for a total of 36 episodes during 1961-62.

Zendee Trucking has had several shipments hi-jacked and one of their drivers shot. Nader is called in to keep track of a truck with an expensive cargo. He follows the truck as it makes its way to L.A. A lady in distress with a broken down automobile has Nader pull over to help. Nader quickly realizes that it is ploy to distract him from the truck he is following. He jumps back in his auto and floors it.

Up ahead, Nader sees a car pull in front of the truck. A man in the car leans out and fires a rifle into the cab of the truck. The truck veers off the road and over a handy cliff. The car with the gunman speeds off. Nader stops to see if he can help. It is too late for the driver, he is dead. Nader gets on the horn and calls in the State Police.

Later, after giving the Highway Patrol types a rundown on what he saw, Nader heads for the office in L.A. It looks like a hi-jacking gone wrong. Nader decides to pay a visit to the dead driver's wife. What he finds is a broken up apartment and a large blood stain. He calls in the L.A. cops to have a look.

Nader decides to root around in the background of the dead driver. He soon digs up that the driver had been mixed up with a group of mobsters. The mobsters are running a brisk hi-jack racket involving several trucking outfits. They muscle trucking office types for delivery info, then hit the proper loads. In this case the inside man is shipping clerk, John Zaremba.

Nader rumbles the guy and gives him a bit of face to face interviewing. This soon has the man singing like a canary. The mobsters had leaned on the dead driver to help with the hi-jacking. The crooks had even grabbed up the man's wife. It turns out that the woman has been killed as well.

Nader passes on the info to the LA cops and heads for the gangster's hideout. The Police arrive, and a massive gun battle erupts with people going down on both sides. The crooks make a break for the hills but are cut down in a hail of lead.

Case closed.

Since this is the first episode of the series I've seen. I'll wait till I see a few more before commenting on whether the series is a keeper or not.
