An intriguing premise with unnecessary baggage
bosporan15 April 2022
The concept is strong but is drowned in excessive, ideological preaching. Time is wasted on the peripheral issues which weakens the core story. Although this one fails, it is interesting enough to want to watch more.

Wtf was that!?

Warning: Spoilers
Love love love Isa, but I have zero idea what they were trying to convey in this episode other than that white people don't "see" Black people, and obviously racism is endemic in our society. Just left me feeling like what a waste of talent and time, and nothing was fleshed out- no pun intended. Ugh. Hope the other episodes have some substance.

No real story. Very preachy going nowhere
bobetjo17 April 2022
This high production value show started well but quickly lost its way twice.

First the preaching about culture differences and racism. The point was made early on and did not need to be laboured. Any reasonable person would have got the point.

Second. The story just went bonkers. I thought this might be a Vanilla Sky style tale. Nope. Possibly The Matrix with fake reality. Nope.

No explanation. Just ends. What a waste of time.

Hey Issa Rae. Issa plays Wanda Well, and the storyline an episode is really beautiful and entertaining, but it's hard for me not to want her to be her full INSECURE self. God I miss that show. So good to see you.

Awful
pierelerouge16 April 2022
The production value saves this from being a one star. An interesting premise about minorities and their unseen struggles is totally ruined by ham fisted writing and a clichéd, over-acted performance from the lead. With an anthology it is always best to lead with your strongest story and if this is the case here I dread to think what the rest will be like. The script and storytelling felt like it was written by a teenager who has taken a one week writers boot camp. If it had ended with 'and then she woke up' it wouldn't have surprised me. Apple misses the mark again!

Excellent

Issa Rae gives an amazing performance. The story feels very modern day twilight zone. Writing, scenery, music and acting all added up to a truly haunting episode.

Terrible episode to Start the Show
18Buddha25 April 2022
Nothing was solved or explained in this episode and it seemed pointless just because they failed to address anything other then that its hard for Black women to be noticed.

They directed it as if shes really vanishing more so then racial related issues.

When she was in the change room she started to see her image distorted as if shes blinking out of existence which was a terrible choice to write n film it that way. They should have strictly stuck to her not being noticed cuz of racial issues instead only.

Poor writing spoiled an interesting idea.

Warning: Spoilers
This could have been a really interesting show, but it was written so poorly that it fizzled out. The writers didn't know their main point or build up to any climax, or even end with any kind of resolution. The point was to show how Black people aren't seen or heard, but it was lost in the poor writing. I could see having her book be called "Invisible", and showing her being interviewed and sharing memories to foreshadow her experiences. Instead of wasting time with pool scenes and dancing, why not have a dream sequence where she dreams she's invisible, and then have it happen in the waking world more and more? No tension, no buildup to a climax, and the worst part was that there was no real ending - she just vaguely heads back in to confront the team.

A Guess You Have To Be Black...
Mehki_Girl3 May 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Really liked this episode and glad they started with it.

If it had started with the next episode, which I found boring although I love Judy Davis, I might not have seen it.

Although the "not being heard by white males" (the majority of my career I worked among them as often the only female and one of color at that), I found it pretty accurate, although I had zero problem being heard because I tend to communicate like males (I'm not asking you. I'm telling you.),I got along fine.

Anyway, the production values were excellent and I like the little subtle things that went into it, which, judging by the reviews, I guess you have to be black to get.

You'd think not being s6ern nor heard (by family, spouses, your children, the boss, coworkers, perfect strangers, people in authority), would be universal.

Guess not.
