Cats !

Warning: Spoilers
Steve , Barbara, Katie and Rob are all attending their boss's costume party and all dress up in cat costumes. Steve's fit him such that he can't wear a shirt or slacks underneath!

Meanwhile Chip and Polly are doing homework and her dad keeps calling and demanding she get home soon. He doesn't believe they are doing homework. Uncle Charlie finally takes over and runs interference for the two young people. He will bring Polly home himself when they finish their homework . He's also baked a big batch of cookies for Dodie . Dodie also gets Chip to tell her a bedtime story.

After leaving the party On the drive home Steve, Barbara, Katie and Rob have car trouble and Steve sets out to get some gas . Problem ? No money or identification in his cat suit! Every house he knocks on only gets him frightened people afraid of a man dressed like a cat! One of them apparently called the police and they pick up Steve not to arrest him but they take him to his boss's house so he can be identified. After a little joke his boss backs him up. Steve is finally able to get home. The others finally made it too it seems Robbie was able to fix the car.

All this makes Polly even more certain to be part of the family. There is joy and happiness and togetherness, love and support. Her mother is a good woman but her father isn't as easy going as Steve it's just not the same kind of home . Today maybe back then too it might appear that Polly is just looking for an escape. I think while there is something to that she really does love Chip .

STEVE THE NOTORIOUS BURGLAR?
tcchelsey13 May 2024
Classic Holloween episode, if you remember back in the day. You have to admit, Fred MacMurray had a sense of humor.

It's time for the office Halloween party and Steve dresses up as a cat? -- complete with whiskers! The party is a success, but the ride home is NOT. Car trouble, forcing him to leave everyone behind to get some help. When you think about it, is it really a good idea to knock on someone's door dressed the way he is? The police are called and they wonder just WHO is this strange guy, and with no identification?

Some kook? How about a robber? You can't help but laugh at this chain of events. And remember the Douglas family lives in Hollywood where anything can happen.

Crazy footnote; shades of the famous "tin man" episode where Steve had to walk to Ernie's school in full costume. Which is more embarrassing?

10 stars for Fred MacMurray --doing all of this with a straight face -- thanks to director Fred De Cordova and writer George Tibbles.

The cop is played by Lee Harris, who frequently appeared on STREETS OF SAN FRANCISCO.

Best of SEASON 11 remastered color. Thanks again to METV for these terrific episodes.

No Stars Really

Warning: Spoilers
Had to comment as the only other review just told the plot, if there was one. I only watch this show to see how they got away with a show so badly written and acted that I'm baffled how it stayed on the air.

Did people actually watch this in1969? I was 14 and didn't watch. The whole concept of two kids doing a project that looked like homework until 1am was unbelievable. Steve agreeing to wear a black cat costume then go for gas without money? Robbie getting the fuel line cleared was equally bizarre but how it stayed on the air is the big question! It's supposedly well after 12:30 am, as time flies and as Charlie tells us and Dodie is up looking for a bedtime story? Huh?

Okay let's accept all that foolishness but when Steve goes to two houses so late at night how is it they are all awake and dressed. When I think of MacMurray reduced to this type of script I think 'Oh how the mighty have fallen.' At least we didn't have to see Ernie bounce around with his cracking voice.
