Bittersweet but full of what I wanted to see
dhmccull22 January 2023
I am so sad that the show is coming to a close, but once again Dana and her crew are bringing their A game. While I like "Thanks to Them" more, "For the Future" is still fantastic! It moves much faster, so there will certainly be many a rewatch to see all I missed.

We get character interactions I was hoping for more of, retouching on "old wounds" that we didn't see fully heal, call backs to past episode in the best way, and a few straight up GUT punches. Also, Luz and Camila share a moment that had me full on in tears. It's no spoiler that this mother-daughter duo is the best!

Add all of this with a doozy of a cliffhanger, and I am both excited and terrified to see where this show goes in the end. This will forever be one of the best shows I've seen in recent years. Thank you team Owl House!!

Oh!! Most importantly we find out what happened to François!!

Consequences of the cancelation
gaborama-0123024 January 2023
Warning: Spoilers
As we all know this series was canceled and cut short by Disney and it's a problem the show has carried since the announcement back in 2021 where many episodes of season 2B were affected including the rush feel of the specials.

Spite of all that this episode do its purpose pretty well, the hexquad shines in this episode with memorable moments like Willow's grief, Hunter's loss and Luz's palisman (part where I cried), exploring the consequences of the world for was something necessary and the episode builds everything up before the last episode, however the main problems here are basically the lack of time and how the show punts not interesting characters like Bosha on the main stage when they easily could've shown other things more in debt like the Collector and Caleb's past, by fixing said mistakes the episode could've been much better.

In my opinion this episode it's a well deserved 8, not the greatest of the season yet it does what it needs to do very well, setting up everything FOR THE FUTURE of the show but with a few stumbles in the process.

It's a transitional episode and it's great.

Warning: Spoilers
Boscha in this epsiode was less about her as a character and more as a way to signal the growth of Willow and Amity. For both to have developed far from that environment, and then to return to it as the stronger people they have become, is really interesting.

People do not realize that in order to move on to the main story we must give it a transitional episode to make sense of what we are going to explain that is why I see excellent the choice to put here that Kikimora and Boscha as antagonists of this episode at no time were we given a moment of redemption for one of the 2. Boscha is actually used Very well in this. Ghost of Willow's past to trigger her breakdown while exploring Amity character growth. While also representing Hexside breaking from the last of old problems during the episode. Not to mention Kikimora, she caused Luz to discover her true motive and also her palisman.

The episode is transitional guys, the lore is there but implicitly, the collector is now in check is very upset and that with Huntlow has been canon only increases more the chances of seeing a flashback of Belos, Caleb and Evelyn. Belos having a déjà vu would be amazing.

AMAZING AND PERFECT SET UP FOR THE FINALE!
bluemlittlem22 January 2023
Warning: Spoilers
This episode was perfect for what a 2nd act needed to be. Here is my take:

This was the last chance for any secondary characters to get run time, and I liked how they used them in this episode. Hexside episodes are sometimes a bit underrated by fans, as they can be fun and also often contain the best plot development. The kikimora fight was a bit short, but I think it worked out fine.

That scene where Luz says that she just wanted to be understood was the best scene in the show period.

It hit hard, especially as a fellow neurodivergent, and I cried alot.

Like every other Disney Protagonist, she gets her "super form" in this scene, in this case, her palisman. But unlike most other protagonists of that type, the moment feels earned and her palisman also very much matches her personality. Overall, This scene was super emotional and one of the biggest victories of the show.

I also liked Willow's arc alot. It really gave her some much needed fleshing out to her character. She has always been the one who is "Stable" and "not afraid of anything", so to see that part of her character being flipped on it's head was great. Willow needs as much therapy as the rest of the hexside squad, and this episode proves why.

The scenes with belos were unsettling in the best way possible. The part where you see Caleb with all the golden guards reminded me of Aang seeing the past airbenders in Avatar. The luz scene was my favourite, but the other most stunning moment in this episode was when you could see the flesh of the grimwalker falling off of Belos's goopy self. Like, how was that even get past the S&P Censors?!

Finally, I really liked how they utilised the collector here. Making the citizens of the boiling isles puppets is brilliant. Also, confirming him as a character who likely be redeemed is great, even if Belos ended up gaslighting him to attack the Hexside squad at the end.

Overall, For the Future works as a "lighthearted" episode (In the biggest air quotes possible) to follow the brutal emotional roller-coaster that was Thanks to Them. This episode didn't need to be Thanks to Them 2. This episode is a buildup to the cathartic finale, as well as a way to answer "how the hell are the hexside squad supposed to defeat a literal god?" There's only one way to find out.

P. S String Bean is so adorable. Must protec!

10/10.

Little time
fandelpapa4 March 2023
Warning: Spoilers
They are preparing us to close the final arc but they give a lot of importance to subplots that only reduce time, I would have loved to see more of the bizarre change than the collector gave to the boiling isles, but instead we saw a boring plot where kikimora is the villain again.

To be the penultimate episode it feels very disappointing, Willow and Hunter's plot seems important to me as well as Luz's, but this happens very quickly and the story of the collectors and the recap titans to a tale King reads it's sad that the season cut caused all of this I hope the last special is unbelievably good.

Incredibly Effective.
The_Coffee_Frog8 April 2023
Following, 'Thanks to Them' would undoubtedly be a hard task for 'The Owl House' team, and while, I don't think this episode quite matches that one, it is still a great episode.

The story, humour and animation are all still top-notch here, my only real complaint is the pacing, which, unlike 'Thanks to Them' sags a bit, and I feel like it could have benefited slightly from being two separate episode, but really, it didn't impact my enjoyment of the episode and I am still excited for the finale.

There were some excellent character moments in this episode, which easily made up for the weaker elements.

Overall, a solid episode that builds up well to the finale.

A small fumble
jamesurech22 January 2023
This is a good episode. Unfortunately, it's a little too bogged down for me to call it a great episode. The story takes a bit too long to get going, but it has some strong character moments, especially near the end.

Not all the jokes land, and some of them feel awkward at times. I get that since we're getting closer to the end that the comedy needs to take a step back, but even this shows other more serious episodes land their comedy better than this one.

In terms of character moments, this episode's conflicts have good foundations in what the rest of the show has set up, but like with a lot of season 2B, it felt like there was too much to do with the time they had, so some of it fell by the wayside and got less focus than it should have. The in-episode conflict setups were weak compared to previous episodes, but that's a step down from an A to a B, so it's by no means bad.

Overall, I wouldn't say this episode lives up to the hype of the 3 month wait time from Thanks To Them, and it makes me a little worried that the show won't be able to stick the landing as well as it should have been able to. Here's hoping episode 3 is great, though.

Clunky and terrible pacing
bjchase-7178425 January 2023
Warning: Spoilers
The animation was absolutely dogwater in some parts, like when Amity goes to talk to Luz about the palismen, and Amity's mouth wasn't even fully animated, and after that scene, freezeframe on her. And the trash pacing, like there was zero build-up to Hunter's reveal about his power. Oh, and when there was a blast from the Collector and the group ducked into an alley, THEY USED GOOD ANIMATION ON THE HAT. And the scene for the entire New Hexside was all so confusing. This is all one hundred percent the cancellation's fault. But this episode did have a few good parts. But there were so many unneeded and terrible parts to this episode. If it wasn't cancelled, this episode would've been way better.

A disappointing episode.
guygooon22 January 2023
Although it had potential to be great, "For The Future" is a disappointing penultimate episode that's clunky, poorly paced, and attempts to bite off more than it can chew.

This episode is a massive step down from "Thanks To Them." It throws too much at the viewer, leaving us confused halfway through as we struggle to process the emotions and ideas shoved in our faces. In addition, the episode doesn't have a distinct, gratifying flow, leaving its ending unsatisfying compared to other episodes.

If The Owl House had been given more time to flesh out the last of its plot and characters, season 3 would've been an incredible ride. Unfortunately, its cancelation left the creators no choice but to stuff as much as they could into these last episodes, which has yet to lead to great results. I'm hoping the show's finale, "Watching and Dreaming," can give this show the closure it deserves.

The Clunkiest Penultimate Episode I've Seen
danieladamvalle22 January 2023
Warning: Spoilers
While it was rewarding seeing Luz and company return to the Boiling Isles, the journey back to Hexside felt like a potential B-plot for an episode that got stuck in this pre-finale. The pacing was too fast and the episode feels very bloated with content the writers wanted to fit in a whole season. I understand that the show underwent a massive cut in episodes - these three specials are only about 30% of what could have been a third season - but several times during my first and second viewing I thought, "they really should have cut this out." There's not a lot of time left in this world, and to focus it on characters like Boscha and Kikimora feels like a waste of precious screen time. Luz herself actually takes a backseat in this episode, which feels off and foreign despite having an episode without her last season that pulled off the concept great. She only really gets a spotlight when her Palisman hatches, which happens in the last few minutes of the episode, and it feels weirdly out of place and underwhelming despite being the natural climax. There were a lot of great jokes in this episode, though it felt severely undercut by the forced and rushed drama that would have been better omitted, as opposed to rushed together in preparation for the finale. It isn't even a bad episode, but since it serves as the penultimate journey to our witches' story, it's a required watch. And having to watch something that feels this clunky just feels bad.

Some good moments, but very cluttered..
bfdiamaster22 January 2023
Warning: Spoilers
The Owl House is one of those shows that has consistently banger after banger episodes. And while I understand the show had to do a lot in these last 3 episodes because of their cancellation, this episode honestly feels far too cluttered even for this show.

There's a whole concept in this episode that's just not needed given the amount of time this show has left. It's an episode like this that makes me devastated that this season wasn't 20-episodes long. So many fun concepts but not enough time.

I wish more time was dedicated to our main cast and the Collector. While the Collector is definitely an agent of chaos, they still don't feel all that threatening. While the stinger at the end of this episode definitely set up that, it would've been nice to see more building blocks to that in this episode. As for our main cast, this contains a massive moment for Luz as she finally accepts herself throughout what she's been feeling, however that as well would've been great to see more of. Due to the school setting she ultimately takes a bit of a back-seat which is so unfortunate.

I'm still excited to see how the show ends. However it just feels a bit disappointing to me personally to see the show lose some steam all because of an episode feeling too cluttered. I wish the show had more time so badly but alas. I hope the finale delivers something truly spectacular. I love this show.
