Last season was a hoot as we followed this dysfunctional family of megachurch Evangelical pastors. They are examples of everything Jesus preached against. While some of the targets of the satire were obvious, the characters were sharply drawn and the subplots and the season's arc offered plenty of twists and hilarious situations. This season we seem to be getting the comedy equivalent of "Succession." Unfortunately the Gemstone siblings are not nearly that interesting this time around. We've already seen their schtick. But John Goodman's Eli and his past are center stage and that makes this season worth watching. And he delivers the biggest laugh in this episode. Also I've got to say that the music in this series is great. Is there a soundtrack album?

Season 1 was hilarious, so far I am into 3 episodes of Season 2 and it is not quite as funny, I like Jesse's friends and Gideon, they need more of them in this, not so much Judy, she is annoying for the most part. The whole "manscaping" thing was funny. The God Squad is kind of stupid, not really funny, I love the character of Keefe, they need to use him more, like in season 1. I need some Baby Billy too, Walton Goggins is so amazing, I love him.

The whole God squad thing is just too over the top and not in a good comedic way, but one that just makes me question why a show on a big network like HBO would even consider absolute nonsense like this.
The good news is that Danny McBride continues to do absolutely strong character work with this show. Sure, his character is very similar to his ones on Eastbound & Down and Vice Principals, but as long as the bit works why shake it up that much.
Interested in seeing how the rest of the season plays out, but this was pretty significant drop in quality from the first episode of the year. Hopefully they get back on track with next week's installment.
