The AppleTV+ show High Desert has found a new vein of drama to explore, set in the high desert region. It has a unique place in American culture and lifestyle, and the jarring time jump has given way to more serious and grounded themes. The exciting combination of the above worked well in the opening episode, and the stellar cast seems capable enough to carry the weight of expectations on their shoulders. The curtain-raiser has high value and seems set to be another important offering from Apple. Denny and Peggy's perfect suburban life is disrupted when the DEA raids their house on Thanksgiving. Several years later, Peggy is living her life as a fictional barmaid in an exhibitionist show in Yucca Valley, California. She has a sister, Dianne, and a brother, Stewart, who visit after their mother's tragic death and tell her they will have to sell the house as they cannot keep up with the mortgage anymore. Peggy is struggling to cope with the death of her mother and is in recovery at a pain management centre. She is looking for a job due to her siblings' inability to support her. Her friend Carol calls Peggy and she steals a man's wallet. Both women are struggling with their children, Ethan, Peggy's kid, who is now living as a State's ward, and Cooper, Carol's daughter, who is acting out against her for leaving her father. Peggy catches a glimpse of Bruce Harvey, the PI Jeannie told her about, on television. She threatens him with legal action if he doesn't return Jeannie's money. Bruce's trade has fallen on hard times and Peggy offers to partner up with him if she brings business to his firm. Her siblings are sceptical, making Peggy defensive and annoyed. She feels they don't see her progress in her battle with addiction. Rosalyn is missing and that Peggy is addicted to drugs. Tammy, one of her co-workers, shows that the ring is genuine and that Peggy spots a missing Picasso painting with a $1 million reward. Bruce hires Peggy as an intern and gives her 10% of the business she brings in. Peggy is heartbroken when she sees Dianne and Stewart avoiding her calls and takes some drugs to manage her pain. She then goes to meet Denny in prison and hands him divorce papers, but Denny does not acquiesce to the divorce. Peggy then gets Peewee, Denny's inmate, to serve the papers to him. Jeannie calls Peggy in a panic, saying the safe was robbed and Owen blames her for it. When Peggy notices Denny's signature, she gets angry and heads to the workplace, asking Jeannie to hold the cops there.
