"Misfits: Episode #1.4" (2009)

Warning: Spoilers
This time it's time to focus on Curtis and his ability to travel in time. Curtis' power works differently to some time travel, he can only do it under times of extreme stress. This is the perfect power for Curtis as he lives in the past and dreams of his past glory. In this episode he runs into his ex-girlfriend, who went to prison for the same drug bust that got him banned from athletics. He feels bad for ruining her life, as she went to jail, and so ends up travelling back to the incident. Like al great time travel stories, he realises the many negatives of changing the past, as he makes things worse in the future and has to try again. During this time, we also see the back stories for other characters, the best one being Nathan's. It turns out his story of being done for eating pick and mix, wasn't such a lie after all. It gives us a glimpse into his personal life with his father, brilliantly played by Dexter Fletcher. Simon also has an emotional moment where we really feel for him, but once again we are conflicted by his creepier side. I'm not usually a big fan of alternate reality episodes, but the episode makes the clever decision to end in a happy medium, which also leaves for more, though slightly more humorous, problems for Curtis. Each of the different timelines has an awesome Run Lola, Run feel. Each being fast paced with plenty of tension. Nathan's sections are hilarious, and Robert Sheehan should be commended for an incredible performance that makes a rather likable and funny guy, out of such an ass.

Grounghog Day Misfits style.

Warning: Spoilers
After flashes of their true powers this week really show us what this cracking British series can do given the chance where we see one of the characters use his turning back time power and use it to actually go back in time and change something which isn't always the brightest idea.

When Curtis(the excellent Nathan Stewart Jarrett)bumps into his former jailbird girlfriend Sam it brings back a sense of guilt seeing as she went to jail for a drug bust and he feels guilty as it should of been him instead.

Suddenly his ability to turn back time goes haywire and he finds himself back at the time of the bust and knows he has to change things to make it right with Sam in the future. But this doesn't always go according to plan and he finds himself playing it over a few times Groundhog Day style to try and get things just right and after thinking he had changed it for the better the Butterfly Effect comes into play as something goes badly wrong in the future meaning Curtis has to go back once more to make sure it doesn't change things dramatically.

Its not just Curtis's story though as his fellow community service buddies are seen briefly meeting each other(very clever that, true foreshadowing there)and we see them have moments to shine for example we see just how Nathan(outstanding Robert Sheehan)got himself into trouble with the law in the first place that includes pinching some pick and mix leading to a very funny exchange between him and the owner of the bowling alley it takes place in called Beverly played by the brilliant Perry Benson(a man called Beverly which of course Nathan has to have a crack about to make us chuckle)plus we see the other three cast members Kelly(Lauren Socha),Simon(Iwan Rheon)and Alisha(Antonia Thomas)before they were up for community service and all five meet each other at different times.

I think this was Misfits best episode so far by a mile and its down to two things the genius plot and the superb acting of Jarrett as Curtis. Its nice he finally gets to lead an episode as the other four stars seem to have had bigger roles than him but for me he is by far the best actor in the show and though Sheehan's Nathan is funniest by far Jarrett's Curtis is the most interesting character and we learn he could of been a superstar athlete if he had left the drugs alone plus though he broke the law he tries his best to make amends and is the most caring of the group that includes trying to take the blame for Sam and looking after his future friend Kelly by helping her after she gets very drunk by putting his coat around her so she is warm and even drunk Kelly appreciates this('your really caring you are' she remarks).

The other star performer was of course Sheehan as Nathan who makes you laugh right way through whether its spitting out the drink he bought, eating pick and mix without paying, running to get away from the manager(by going down the bowling lane)and taking the mick out of owner Beverly's name('that's a girls name isn't it' is the only joke I can write that isn't rude to be honest)before having his dad come down to bail him out which he doesn't(brilliantly played by Dexter Fletcher)and then finally stapling Beverly's hand with a stapler. The others have good moments including Kelly's before mentioned meeting with Curtis before they see each again later,Alisha thinking Curtis is chatting her up at the bar and the creepy member of the group Simon getting cruelly embarrassed but after caring about him we see a dangerous side to him as thinks about attacking Kelly when she is sleeping before thinking otherwise(this guy is odd and could be evil),they all are brilliant.

Far and away the best episode of this unique British series so far with a gripping time loop plot, fantastic acting by Jarrett,Sheehan on epic comedy form and supreme writing better than most Brit shows would try.

One of the best episodes of the series. I love it because all the characters are in this episode despite them having met. Also, great soundtrack.

Warning: Spoilers
Alright, so why didn't he just go back and save them, if their deaths bothered him, instead of screwing up his life all over again after having painfully fixed it??? It was an entertaining episode, but doesn't make sense what he chose at the end... He wanted to undo his error for years! Moreover, if he wasn't struck by the lightning, then he didn't get his superpowers and couldn't travel back in time to not get struck by lightning... Paradox.
