This is our future and will; happen.
Extrapolations could have been an entertaining show with a mix of action and drama sprinkled in with social commentary about climate change. However, it takes such a ham-fisted, heavy-handed method of delivering its message that it feels like being smacked in the face constantly. The show struggles to even portray any memorable characters so far, and with time jumps coming across the season, it will be interesting to see if the show calms down with its messaging and focuses on building characters we really care about. So far, this is a shaky start. Episode 1 of Extrapolations starts on July 16th 2037. COP42 is taking place in Israel and corporations are growing bigger and more profitable. Alpha Industries CEO Nick Bolton is rumoured to have invested in a new casino project above the Arctic Circle. The COP42 conference is focused on migration, lack of water, and Nick Bolton's water desalinization patents. Nick Bolton has water desalinization patents that could help some nations, but they need to be wary of what he may ask for in return. Giving these over would result in a loss for Bolton of over 2.7 billion euros. Marshall is preparing for his first day as a Rabbi in Tel Aviv. Becca, a pregnant woman, is saved from a forest fire in New York. Omar, Becca's partner, is one of the key members of the COP42, but he values his family above the country and rushes out to be with his wife. Junior, an archetypal evil billionaire, doesn't value family and wants to continue making money, believing that the world is going to end in a blaze of glory. He and other elites can go out in "gold-plated coffins designed by Kanye" to go out in a blaze of glory. The story takes place in Greenland, specifically at Franz Josef Land, where ice sheets have melted and there are numerous obstacles in the way. To preserve what we have, Menagerie2100 will attempt to gene-capture plants and animals, to maintain a vast library of creatures before they can be reintroduced to the world. Omar lands, just as Becca gives birth, and their baby is hooked up to machines. Becca laments being in the forest trying to save birds for the Menagerie2100 project, but believes the pair are stronger together. At the Climate Summit, the nations cave to Bolton's demands, agreeing to a global temperature increase. Outside, someone sets themselves on fire in protest. Junior is killed by a walrus in Greenland, but Bolton informs him of Alpha's withdrawal from the hotel business. As a result, a massive sheet of ice collapses in Greenland, raising sea levels across the world. This is due to the temperature increase caused by the collapse of a massive sheet of ice.

A sombre reflection at what's just ahead of us
jaysmith-542048 April 2023
This series starts with showing us around 2037, with wildfires, floods, water shortage, mass migration and ecosystem collapse. It focuses on a few people; a rabbi and his parents, a billionaire with a celebrity girlfriend trying to capitalize on climate disaster, and policymakers. It does focus on personal stories to bring this to life, but it doesn't really give as much up-close character-building I'd like. The actions and motivations seem a little simplistic.

It's a fair extrapolation, looking at 1.5 °C to 2 °C "with a ceiling of 2.3 °C". So you wont get "The Day After Tomorrow" vibes, and I feel this must have had some fact-checking.

Whilst all this is going on, I particularly like the little sci-fi details like wearables, cloned animals, personal AI assistants, holographic displays and fancy toothbrushes. If you're a fan of dystopian near-future world-building and sci-fi, or a fan of natural history, you might find this quite interesting.

Great cure for insomnia

With some of the big names I thought that this could be a good series. Watched the shorts and they seemed ok.

What a let down. I managed to stay away for the first episode but only just. So slow, boring and constantly swapping between locations.

I won't be watching anything past episode one.

Unless you are having trouble sleeping or have a heart issue so you can't get your heart rate above 70bpm I wouldn't bother.

Such a waste of talented actors. It's like watching a new real put on by Greenpeace.

I can't think of anything else to say but they make me reach a set number of characters. All done now.

You must READ: The Ministry for the Future by Kim Stanley Robinson
pamelatak4 April 2023
You all should read the book: The Ministry for the Future by Kim Stanley Robinson. It covers many of the climate situations shown here, not exactly but in a similar style. It is a number of stories about various possibles that could happen, most likely will happen like this series shows. It will get more terrible than we can imagine. There are some places in the world that will suffer terribly but the richer countries will do nothing, perhaps can't really do anything. And the richer counties will have to pay somehow to fix what they have done, we halve done. We can not possibly image how bad it is going to get.
