Although most folks probably wouldn't consider watching this documentary, it really is a must-see for everyone. That's because it addresses Alzheimer's and that as well as other dementias will most likely affect everyone who reads this. You may develop it but more likely someone you know and love will sometime in your life.
"I Remember Better When I Paint" begins in the 1990s. A a woman diagnosed with the disease said the phrase that became the title of the program and soon a local volunteer artist began working with her using art therapy. Progress at first was excruciatingly slow, as the old woman barely ever spoke and showed little interest. However, eventually, using art, she opened up and developed a sense of purpose to her life as well as improvement in her cognitive functioning. While the show clearly points out that it is not a miracle cure, it also shows a variety of programs around the world that were spurred on by this experiment--and now art appreciation classes and art classes are bearing results.
This is a very impressive show to watch. While Alzheimer's is a depressing prospect, this show indicates that there are some rays of hope and the overall tone is quite positive. Well worth seeing and quite inspirational.
