Warning: Spoilers
Truly touching episode, one of the best in the series. The transition showing the dog's flashback recollection is effective and done very cleverly. The calliope music is presumably a recording, as we never see the actual instrument on the medicine man's wagon. This tune is "Donauwellen" ("Waves of the Danube") by Iosif Ivanovici, a Romanian waltz from 1880, later popularized in 1946 as "The Anniversary Song" with lyrics by Al Jolson and Saul Chaplin. It was used in many tv shows and films including "Stray Dog" (1949) by Kurosawa, an ironic coincidental title since this episode of "Father Knows Best" actually concerns...a stray dog!
