Damon Drecker is seen in a pensive mood walking late at night through the baseball field of his school. It is obvious he would like to be the athlete hi is not. After all, his father Ray was a star when he was younger, something that must be terrible for this awkward looking boy. Having seen drinking from a super sized soda container, he decides to make a stop to relieve himself from the excess liquid on the home plate.
Ray decides he must have a talk with Lenore. After the woman spotted him hugging his former wife Jessica, he wants to have Lenore stop seeing Jess, but he does not go too far, when he rings her bell. Ray gets a better reception with Tanya, whom he finds engrossed in a discussion with her landlords, the Indian couple, about owing them rent money. Tanya assures Ray she can deliver for him because she now has a few wealthy contacts.
Jessica is surprised when Ronnie steps into the shower while she is inside. She is taken aback by the ardor he shows her. Jessica feels that 42 she is a bit older to have the baby Ronnie craves for. Visibly disappointed Ronnie steps into the kitchen in an uproar looking for his oatmeal. His mother-in-law, who is eating cannot get over the way Ronnie decides to smash a serving dish on the floor.
Mike, the assistant coach comes to Ray to tell him what he has learned about Damon urinating in the home plate. Ray promises he will look into the matter. First, he must go with Tanya to a shopping mall, where the wealthy widow wants to see what Ray looks like from a distance. Tanya, who has heard about Damon's problems, wants to try to interest him in her poetry club.
Ray goes to a meeting at one of the elegant hotels to meet Christina. Mike, having a drink at the bar, spots him as he is checking in under a false name. Ray manages to get rid of him. An unexpected surprise awaits for him when he enters the room. Christina is a playful woman who wants to get into the action right away, but, since it is her birthday, she wants her sex accompanied by the singing of "Happy Birthday".
Ronnie and Jessica patch their differences; Jess is still not comfortable with the idea of having a baby. Lenore visits, but it is clear Jessica has her mind already set in the new possibility. For that, she visits Ray in the athletic field to tell him she is not going to see him, or go bowling again.
The episode ends as Tanya is introducing a poem at the Sad Souls Cafe, to an unresponsive audience. When she decides to repeat the last phrase of her work, the patrons are baffled. Damon is clearly enjoying a new found amusement to his father's puzzlement. Who would even think poetry could interest the young man! The fourth episode of the new season was written by an outsider, Brett C. Leonard, who does well following the story line the creators wanted to achieve. The director, Uta Briesewitz, has been involved with the show as a cinematographer. Her contribution to the enjoyment of this installment was an unexpected surprise.
The regulars, Thomas Jane and Jane Adams, are seen at their best. These actors compliment one another in such ways because of the chemistry both bring to their parts. Charlie Saxton, who plays Damon, is showcased in this chapter, he is becoming more appealing as he settles with his character. Eddie Jamison, Anne Heche and Rebecca Creskoff blend easily into the story.
