Not as bad as I was expecting
thebatssidekick15 March 2023
Besides some mild high school drama and the occasional corny dialogue, I'm pleasantly surprised with this episode. Not saying it's amazing, but this series definitely has potential. There are a couple of important questions I have that are unanswered, but I'm giving the show a chance. For example, how did they truly know Bruce was Batman aside from him having a party store mask on his face? I really liked the set design of the Batcave, and I thought the cinematography was decent, but there are still some things a CW budget leaves to be desired. I much preferred the Wayne Tower set on Batwoman, as this one felt like a small office compared to the huge skyscraper suite that Ryan Wilder had in the previous Gotham-based show. All-in-all, if you like Batman or Court of Owls related stories with mystery and detective elements, then by all means give it a shot. But if you're expecting an action-packed Batman show like Arrow or Batwoman, then unfortunately you will be disappointed.

Honestly, Better than it had any Right to Be.
demigodshmurda15 March 2023
Warning: Spoilers
Maybe it's just because I watched Superman and Lois immediately before this. Maybe it's just because Flash has been a terrible experience to watch these past five weeks. Maybe it's because I just don't wanna see how bad the episode actually was or could be. But you know what? This really wasn't that bad.

I'm gonna get the easy complaints out of the way. It's filmed like a CW show. The filter they put on every shot is the same filter every CW show has been using since late 2019, and I'm starting to get sick of seeing every show I watch in shades of gray. It's giving me a headache. The costumes, especially on Carrie Kelley, are very cheap. The acting is middling from most of the people on set except for Misha Collins. The fight scenes have way too many cuts in them. The effects are cheap. And at this point, Turner is really the only one with any actual character of our main cast. What I'm saying is, on the surface this seems like it should've sucked. But yeah, nah, I kinda enjoyed it actually.

Is it the best DC show out there? Nah. Is it gonna take the world by storm like The Flash once did? Probably not. Is it even gonna get renewed for a second season? I'd bet money that it doesn't. But you know what I did see on screen here? Respect for Batman. Respect for Bruce Wayne.

I've never been a huge Batman guy, but I've picked up some pieces here and there. Obviously though, the one thing that we all know about Batman is that he's a humanist. He doesn't kill. So when Turner stepped in-between Duela and the dirty cop she had a gun on and said he was "Doing what my dad would want me to do", that seemed to me like they were putting some respect on Batman's name. When Turner was speaking at his dad's funeral and was talking about how the people of Gotham could fill the hole he left in the city, that seemed to me like they were putting some respect on Batman's name. When we see one of the Talons' from the Court of Owls decapitate that guy at the end of the episode, and when we hear Duela talking about how dangerous they are and how they rule everything through the shadows like in the comics (I told you, I picked up a few things), that seemed to me like they were putting some respect on Batman's name. Or, well, putting some respect on the name of some of his villains. And when they talk about how Batman took Turner in because he knew what it was like to be orphaned, that seemed to me like they were putting some respect on Batman's name.

Ultimately, respecting Batman is really all I care about. And I'm not even a Batman fan! I grew up on the Tobey Maguire Spider-Man movies instead of the Christian Bale Batman movies. But all I cared about was putting respect on the name of Bruce Wayne. And I can say with confidence that I saw more of that here than I ever saw in the one season of Batwoman that I watched.

And I like what they're doing with Harvey Dent too. I haven't seen much Supernatural, but I've liked what I have seen from Misha Collins. He really does sell the role. I'm glad that they're trying to make him likable despite us knowing what's eventually gonna happen to him. I even noticed in that little overview trailer for the season that we see him punch a mirror and the glass breaks on half of his face, hinting at where he's going. If I had to put money on what I think is gonna happen, Harvey's gonna get in some accident, his face is gonna get covered up, and then he's gonna be the mouthpiece for the Court of Owls by the end of the season; a specific person for our heroes to punch. And I'd be kinda down for that to be honest.

Really, the only thing I can say with any certainty that I wasn't super into was Duela. I'm not sure if it's that she's too zany or not zany enough, but it's one of the two. She just feels very out of place on screen.

When we see these kids start easily beating on the Talons' from the Court of Owls though, yeah, that's gonna be hard to believe. But you know what? That hasn't happened yet. It's just something for us to look forward to it seems. Yay?

Maybe I just see potential in this show where everybody else is gonna see trash, but if you wanted my take on the Pilot? Honestly, better than it had any right to be.

7 / 10.

Hello exposition
slider19916 March 2023
There was a lot of exposition in this episode. Nothing really grabbed me as interesting until the last 10 minutes or so, and it wasn't until this point that I became interested in the next episode.

The first half of the episode moved fast and did not allow the emotions to hit. It seemed very one-dimensional.

Most of the characters are interesting and well acted. Unfortunately, the primary/lead was as flat as the tone of the episode.

I think there's potential for the show to grow, but those who are merely curious about the show will be likely to switch to something else after just half of the pilot.

The first episode, and the last episode? Warning: Spoilers
If I'm being honest, when I first heard about Gotham Knights I was a little excited.

I knew it had to do with the death of Bruce Wayne/Batman, and the Bat Family stepping up to find out who did it while trying to protect the city. But when I heard the names of the characters in the show, I only recognized three names, Harvey Dent, Stephanie Brown, and Carrie Kelley. What worried me the most was the main character of Turner Hayes. I knew nothing about this character, and I couldn't find any DC comics character with that name. It makes me think that Turner is an original character, and with the long history that Batman has, I don't like that they had to create a new character, and make him the adopted son of Bruce Wayne. I do not like that one bit. There is a chance I could be wrong about the character of Turner, but I don't think I am.

Now after watching the first episode, I'm happy to say I recognized one more thing. It looks like the big bad of the season will be The Court of Owls. And that is something I recognize from the comics and other shows.

But if they are the big bad of the season, and they are the ones who killed Bruce/Batman, then there is really no reason to keep watching. The mystery of who killed Bruce Wayne is solved, and the four people framed for the murder knows it was The Court of Owls. It's only the first episode, and now there really isn't reason to keep watching. Well, not a good reason.

Everything I've said could be wrong. They might have a surprise twist planned that no one will see coming. But right now, I haven't seen anything that makes me excited to watch the next episode to see what happens next, but I'm going to try to watch one, maybe two more episodes to see if it can change my mind.

Alternative Universe
dvdlovingiii18 March 2023
Unless this is a different universe...it doesn't make any sense. Batman dies and no other superheroes investigate?

I'm really hoping this isn't another WB teen drama disguised as a batman story.

Where's Nightwing? RedHood? Damien?

Batman fought & survived the Joker, and other famous villains. And those are just the earth-based ones.

& Bruce dies before the advent of TwoFace?

Who believes that he was killed by someone so young....this show better get a whole bunch of the "not Archie version of batman " real quick WB : I'd rather have another animated movie than a tween television series that is filled with disappointment.

way better than expected
cismaj16 March 2023
I´m not a big DC fan, but this pilot did his job and wanted me to watch more of it.

The show doesn´t seem like just another DC show/movie, it has a different, new feel to it and that is one of the reasons why it caught me, but I can see how hardcore fans want to stick to there old ways, but there are a lot of old movies and shows they can rewatch.

Can´t wait to see the dynamic between the young ones develop and I definitly can´t wait to see harvvey dents´decline to the dark side

Sadly the ratings won´t show the qualty of this show, as it will get trashed by transphobes. But I think, especially in times like this, representation is so important and necessary.

A batman Dead and Revealed is not a good way to start
alan-5380429 April 2023
Warning: Spoilers
I guess if you hate BM and have always wanted him dead and his identity revealed, go for this silly take-off.

Further, his ward is not Robin, instead his ward is a snobbish over-privileged lad with no physical attributes like a trapeze artist.

So in that, BM decided the lad would be a bad side-kick. The overlords are the OWLS who somehow with a dead zombie-like enforcer control Gotham since before Alan Wayne, Bruce's architect grandfather's, untimely death by star shaped pointed knives.

Fortunately, it is likely good that BM IS dead so as not to see how his family's fortune is wasted by a female Alfred-like butler that poisoned him.

I might like a DC show
mucke-2633116 March 2023
I had no expectations going in, since I'm no DC fan and have no idea about the source material. To be honest I only gave it a chance because of Misha Collins.

But I actually might like this show.

I liked that it was not to dark, but also not too cartoony. The characters actually seem to have fleshed out backstories and the actors playing them actually make me believe in those.

Of course there were hit and misses, but it was the pilot episode. As I've heard there were changes made between the pilot and the rest of the episodes in filming location and probably also in budget, so maybe bad wigs will no longer a distracting factor for the ultra fanboys, who I've seen complaining on other platforms.

At last I give the show an extra kudos for having a trans character. Representation matters. Especially in times like these in a country like the USA.

...IT SUCKED!!!
slaff-9304729 April 2023
Absolutely horrendous acting and writing in this new boring DC teen drama from The CW. The only positive was the ending, one of the most gory scenes in a CW DC series, but, other than that, some visuals and Misha Collins performance, this was a poorly written and acted episode, BUT, as the DC fan I am, I must watch the rest. There is also a decent score. But yeah, it sucked and is not worth watching unless you liked the first season of Batwoman, which this was worse than honestly. Hopefully the series does improve over this, I will binge through it to get up to date, but I don't expect it to get good at all.

A big step up for the CW.
sdegennaro1315 March 2023
I am shocked how impressed I am with this show. You can think I'm biased since I've watched a bunch of shows on the CW. But I watched most of those for campy fun with a low bar and therefore gave them mediocre ratings. This show is on another level. The production value was way better than anything else I've seen on this network. The story got me interested and acting was actually really good. Even for a pilot it's clear the pulled out all the stops and went for it. They hit a home run here. So my rating is against all other CW shows. This one is definitely a 10. Give it a chance. It's worth a shot, no lie.

The show has potential, but need to stay away with stupid writing
BatBanks17 March 2023
Warning: Spoilers
The series is about the murder of Bruce Wayne and his adopted son & street teens are accused of his killing. They join forces with Carrie Kelley and Stephanie Brown to clear their names and find out who murder Wayne.

First of all, the series has potential, but they should not add Batman/Bruce Wayne in the mix, because the show has nothing to do with Batman, they should make a random rich guy got murder not Bruce Wayne. There's no Dick Grayson, Damian Wayne, Alfred or Commissioner Gordon where are they? Instead, they create Bruce Wayne adopted son named Turner Hayes who was never in the comic.

It has bad writing (they brought the same writers of the bad show, Batwoman). The cast cannot act (except for Olivia Rose Keegan as Duela (who claimed to be The Joker's daughter) where her character is the only one carrying the series and Misha Collins ("Supernatural") as Harvey Dent).

Oscar Morgan is attractive lad but cannot act, like rest of CW cast they have attractive people with a lack of talent.

I will give the series another tried from episode 2-3 or 6, as along they focus on The Court of Owls. The series might end up like Riverdale. It needs to remove all the teen soap opera, keep The Court of Owls & Harvey Dent. Because this show is one that no one ask for and ruins Batman mythos to fans with stupid storylines plot.

A wonderful and intriguing premiere
StephanieA8316 March 2023
I have been excited for Gotham Knights since it was first announced last year. After finally seeing the pilot episode I am happy to say it exceeded my expectation. The show is visually gorgeous with beautiful cinematography (the funeral scene for example). The characters are well written and compelling. My favorite of the Knights being Duela, who is funny and kicks ass. I love the inclusion and representation of a trans character, Cullen, played by a trans actor. There needs to be more of this in tv/movies. Of course I can't leave a review without mentioning Misha Collins as Harvey Dent/Two-Face. I adore Misha and while not the biggest Batman fan have always been intrigued by Dent's/Two-Face's tragic story. Misha does a brilliant job of bringing Dent to life, making him sympathetic and charismatic. I look forward to and at the same time dread his descent into becoming Two Face. This first episode was better than I expected and I already had high hopes. Fast paced, action packed and amazing acting from the whole cast. I can't wait for episode 2 to find out more about the mystery of who killed Bruce Wayne and who are the Court of Owls and who else is under their control.

Ok... i guess
siggy0315 March 2023
Warning: Spoilers
The pilot was quite mediocre, but at the end there is still some potential. I wasn't convinced seeing the trailers and this episode didn't convince me much more, but here we go.

First of all let's see what I liked in the episode: The plot isn't too bad, however, it feels recycled. The acting is ok for most actors but I think most of the actors are starting so I can't really blame them. I also remember "Naomi" from last year where the acting got increasingly better, even if the show was boring. The highlight was Harvey Dent's portrayal, and it's maybe the best part of the episode.

Then, I like the portrayal of Gotham City here. It isn't as good as in the "Gotham" tv show but it's definitely better than "Batwoman" which looks like an offbrand Star City.

Also, spoiler alert, but the effects for the head at the end were ok. It doesn't look as cheap as some other CW effects (like the Eobard Thawne head ripping in The Flash season 8).

Last thing that I liked, or at least that got me intrigued is the portrayal of Robin. We haven't had much backstory in the episode so I hope to see more in the upcoming ones.

Now let's see what I didn't like.

First of all, Bruce Wayne's death here is stupid and cliche. The writers could have found a a better death than falling through a window (but it's The CW writers so we're all used to it).

Then let's say one thing, most of the characters here are absolutely bland and uninteresting outside of Dent and their version of Robin. Yes I know it's a pilot but Arrow, Flash, S&L and even Naomi's pilot episodes got me more interested in the characters only in their pilot episodes. It really feels like some reused characters and they lack personality so far.

The dialogue is sometimes abysmal, but again it's a CW show so what do I expect ? "This is blood money" like you didn't know what you were doing ?

Then how does a bunch of teenagers take down a trained officers ? I know it's not meant to be realistic but there are limits to this.

Last thing, the suits look cheap. However it isn't as bad as some other CW suits (e.g Red Death).

Overall it was a mediocre / ok pilot episode. There was some good stuff and I feel that there is a potential. But I shouldn't forget who makes this and how bad CW shows can become sometimes.

5/10.

A great start!
aprilegunn15 March 2023
I went in with middling expectations, but I was pleasantly surprised! This pilot had a lot to introduce, but it managed to do so without making me feel like I was just being hit in the face with paragraphs of exposition. This version of Gotham strikes the perfect balance between noir and camp. The characters are well-done, distinct and interesting. The dialogue snaps without feeling overly quippy. The central mystery grabbed me immediately. And the cast really dug into their parts! They're so good and the on-screen chemistry is fantastic. I'm in for the rest of the season, and I cannot wait to see how the mystery unfolds!

Disappointed doesn't even cover it
J_Aaron8917 August 2023
I actually had high hopes for this show. I was always a fan of Misha Collins from super natural and love the Batman universe but this was a major disappointment. Bad writing, incoherent plot lines, strange setting and BAD acting. The main characters are unbelievable... and I mean that literally. Cool premise for the Gotham Knights storyline but just a really weak delivery. I can't see myself watching anything past this one episode and I certainly see this show ever being renewed for a second season. Assuming they don't get canceled mid season I hope they don't end on a cliffhanger because this is going to be a one and done.

Gotham city

Warning: Spoilers
: I have so many good feelings in getting to know this series with Characters you want to know more about and how these relationships that will be woven because of the tragedy that has inflicted Gotham city. Batman will be the underlined focus in mystery. The cinematography that the director of the Gotham Fox Tv series is much appreciated Danny Cannon; really awesome feel into the Gotham universe. As we try to find out how Cullen, Harper, Duela could of possibly killed Batman we are immediately given the set up. This episode made me fear the future for the Characters and hope for the beautiful look of Gotham city..

Fast Paced, Gripping, Can't Wait for More
curryrachele15 March 2023
Warning: Spoilers
I had high hopes but I tried to temper my expectations for this show, the latest iteration in many CW shows about the DCU. I'm a Misha Collins fan and followed him over to watch this show, and was expecting to primarily be interested in Harvey dense storyline. However, there were times I completely forgot. Harvey Dent was relevant to the story because the rest of this cast was so gripping and entertaining and made me interested to follow their story from the start.

Standouts include Duela as a fantastically sarcastic firebox who does not give an eff, the simmering jealousy between Turner and Robin/Carrie as they debate who was less understood and appreciated by their surrogate father figure of Bruce Wayne/ Batman, and the fantastically quippy writing. "I'll give you another dead name: Bruce Wayne" had me howling at that whiplash reply.

Anyway, can't wait to check in over the next 12 episodes and learn more about the shadowy Court of Owls and find out who really killed Batman.

I'm thrilled with the pilot of the Gotham Knights!
cocklesjm15 March 2023
Warning: Spoilers
It's a very good show for the pilot episode.

In fact, I've been waiting for this show since it was announced. And I understood from the plot that it would be something good and Ent would have interesting plot branches, but I didn't realize until the end that it would be better than I expected. Absolutely everything is perfect, from the scenery, atmosphere to acting, style and costumes.

Misha Collins is very good, and the young cast arouses sympathy and interest. They coped well with the task, everything looked dynamic and exciting.

Thirdly, the plot draws you in right away, and even for the pilot there is so much going on!

From the actors to direction to storyline to costumes to special effects was all spot on it super well constructed. When watching go with an open mind, you will love it i still am crying. Don't judge something before seeing it and this is such a beautiful start and the next episode seems evens awesomest, i can't wait for next weeks episode let's go knights, and master of coins Harvey Dent. Portrait of harvey by misha I think have new favourite harvey.

tarothero15 March 2023
I have been looking forward to seeing this series for quite some time and it does not disappoint. The story flows well right from the start. Events unfolded and kept me riveted to my seat. I was planning to live tweet during the live broadcast of the pilot episode but I was far too busy watching and taking it all in. I will not spoil anything here, but I will say this show has a very interesting bunch of complex characters that I really just want to learn more about. Also I definitely will be re-watching the pilot again to make certain that I didn't miss anything. I just love all the details. I highly recommend.

triciamiller-0031415 March 2023
I was pleasantly surprised by everything in this pilot episode. The characters are well written and the whole vibe screams Batman. From set design and costumes to editing and special effect, nothing was forgotten.

I of course am smitten with Harvey and know that his eventual change will break hearts. I love the idea of the backstory of Two-Face, the one that gets glossed over in movies. I also can't wait to see how Duela, Harper and the others grow as characters. The actors all have good chemistry with each other and the story so far is well written. I can't wait to see what happens next! Bravo!

From a casual DC content viewer
bohowitch16 March 2023
Interesting premise, well written, good cast.

This first episode was intriguing and showed promise; it had a nice balance of action and drama.

I'm unfamiliar with these characters, being a GA member and not an avid DC fan, but I'm interested in learning more of their stories. Is there more to Turner Hayes than just being Bruce's adopted son? What about the Joker's daughter. How/why would a child be raised in Arkham Asylum? Who are Harper and Cullen Row? What's Carrie's story? I hope they flesh these characters out more as the series progresses.

As long as they avoid stereotypical cliches, should prove to be a very good show.

I'll be tuning in next week to see how it goes.

ayaisamiraclething16 March 2023
I Really enjoyed this one. This pilot was a fun, a bit gritty, not too-much packed with plot, has a very nice impression of our main characters and highly entertaining to add. And while I'm a huge fan of our old and beloved BatFam, I must say that having all new characters is kinda exciting, it's a clean slate sort of situation and I'm here for it. So all and all I really enjoy it. Also I must say, of the young characters Duela us my favorite so far, with a strong case that could be made for the Harper siblings, our new Robin and Stephanie. And I highly anticipate Harvey quote-unquote downfall/journey in this show.

Promising start
kannbrown17 March 2023
I'll admit to loving comic movies and shows, and this one is a fascinating take on it. Trying to remain relatively spoiler free, the introduction of a certain covert organization gives it a different feel than many shows who emphasize strictly powered super villians or street level. There's a political intrigue element to this.

The characters, while needing some more building, are already acquiring some depth, beyond their tics or niche in the group.

There's some decent action, and special effects too, for the fun value.

I think it has had a promising start, and I hope that it continues to live up to it. I'll keep watching.

Pleasant surprise!
jncjthfzw17 March 2023
I had no idea what to expect and was mostly watching for Misha Collins but was pleasantly surprised by the rest of the cast. The actress who plays the joker's daughter is a stand out for me. Really talented and so charismatic.

The pilot is only setting up the story, so not much happened that we didn't already know from the shows promos. I'm excited to see where they take the story and Harvey Dent's transformation into Two-Face. As a Misha fan, I'm a little biased here 😅

Also, very happy to see diverse representation! It's something that is truly needed in mainstream media. Grateful to tptb that are doing it tastefully.
