There's a real sense that Rick's career is in the toilet in this episode, having been bumped from the shopping channel, being mocked by Michael of all people, and even Mel hinting that with her agency doing well he really doesn't have to work.
He has ended up teaching a comedy master class to limited effect, and sadly to limited laughs in another so-so episode of the fourth series. I think the show by this point had run its course, and was going over the same old plot points, so perhaps it was best that Jack Dee decided that this would be the last run out.
The final scene sets us up for the two hander between Dee and guest star Robbie Coltrane, so perhaps that will spark a bit of life into proceedings.
