Everything is B movie standard
phd_travel3 July 2017
Warning: Spoilers
On the plus side the rare and vintage cars are quite beautiful and the scenery in the South of France is attractive even though Marseilles is not the prettiest town in France. The cast is OK but B movie caliber. The girls are semi hot and the villains semi menacing. Scott Eastwood is alright but he doesn't quite have enough charisma to make up for the rest of them.

The story seems pretty predictable until a twist saves things then it doesn't seem like such a ho hum movie. The car chase is rather slow because the cars are delicate and can't be damaged. In fact I was more anxious about the cars being dented than anything else. This movie doesn't attempt to be a Furious type movie.

Not a must watch by any means.

Not up to the Mark
aronsteel24 January 2018
Warning: Spoilers
I think the movie was okay but still not up to the standards where it can be called a good movie. It lacked many things, even the car chase and stunts were not that amazing. The graphics i can say was okay but still the car driving skills lacked too much. There was really no plot to the movie, it started and went with the flow. There were no twist no suspense nothing. The story was totally plain and not worth it. The acting was okay but there were some scenes where you were able to tell just what is going to happen next. They really lacked expressions and sometimes over expressed themselves. To sum it up, just one time watch movie that too if you want to just pass out time. If you really want to watch for a good time then it might not be the one for you.

Not good
This movie reminds me the French "Taxi" movie series (from Luc Besson): bad action scenes, bad acting, bad script, bad camera work....

I don't know how Scott Eastwood got involved in this movie. Because he can have a pretty good acting career like his father by selecting better projects.

Ana De Armas is not good either (before her big break in Blade Runner 2049). Surely because of the crappy and unoriginal script.

And I don't know how this movie got funded. Surely it can be a nice TV movie, so forgettable.

The creators of this Movie should be charged and tried
visionlko30 October 2017
I've been reading reviews on IMDb for about 6 years now and I never felt compelled to write one myself. However, the characters in Overdrive change this.

The two brothers are criminals to begin with. There is no reason to justify their crimes yet they are super- cool, stylish and over the top in every aspect. The two girls who are thieves themselves also possess the same excellent qualities like the boys do. That's just not it, one of them is okay to throw herself at any men, to be taken advantage of, she comes across. The other one is so annoying and treats the protagonist with utter disrespect that it's hard to be with her for just one minute for any men with a little sense of self- respect let alone be a life-partner but our protagonist can't imagine his life without her. I'm yet to see a character in any movie that has so low opinion about himself.

These protagonists display all the qualities of low-life, cheap, immoral, uncivilized, lowest of the low, small time thieves that should have been suffered in the movie yet they are portrayed like super- cool F**** who won it all in the end. Bad lesson for the young people.

Not a Fast&Furious film
orlin-4075730 June 2017
I saw this film by chance in my local cinema. To begin with, it is nothing like some of the best actions from European creators, such as Taken, District B13, Transporter, etc.

The action is good enough, with a couple of silly moments. The leads are handsome, but they don't give the performance of their lifetime. Some good funny moments, very beautiful landscapes from France, stereotypical villains and very rare and exotic cars. The plot is also not very original and the directing is nothing special - it has no special vibes like the action/criminal films by Luc Besson, Pierre Morel or Olivier Marchal.

It is a "popcorn movie" not worse than the most of the recent films that stars like Nicholas Cage, Bruce Willis, Val Kilmer and even Robert DeNiro are part off. I believe that Scott Eastwood is getting better and better in acting, he just needs some more challenging roles, not just handsome guy for average actions and romantic films.

6,5/10 in order to stimulate more the European film creators and young actors.

Downgraded version of The Fast and The Furious
febhanli22 September 2017
The best parts of the FF franchise are the effects and action scenes which require a massive budget.

Take away the budget and you get this movie which is a boring, clique'd, uninspiring mess that should have not been made.

Not absolutely horrendous but you will forget that this movie existed after walking from the theater.

OK caper movie
neil-4768 May 2018
Warning: Spoilers
Half-brothers Andrew and Garrett have a lucrative business - stealing high-end classic sports cars to order for mega-rich clients. They make a mistake in stealing a car which a nominee has just bought at auction for murderous gang boss Morier. This puts them in danger of being murdered unless they can make amends by stealing cars from rival gang boss Max Klemp, which carries its own risks.

This French film is very much in the mould of the original Transporter movie - crime caper, Mediterranean locations, lots of stunt driving and action. But its's not so much Fast & Furious, more Quite Quick & A Bit Cross.

The only actor I had heard of was Scott Eastwood as the American brother, but all the performances were fine. The chemistry between the two brothers worked well. The plot had enough little wrinkles and sidetracks to please, the action was well-handled, and the film looked good.

Let's not think too much about the morality of it, eh?

This will be one which I will probably stick with if I catch it while channel-hopping.

Overdrives your brain into dullness
scaradu17 June 2017
Overdrive mashes so many ideas from other movies that it was hard to keep up with all of them and so I stopped counting when I couldn't keep up. Sure, stealing from other movies isn't a bad idea when you add your own touch. As some guy once said "steal like an artist" but with this one, it's like you're watching a weird reenactment of cool ideas from other movies without adding your own details or imprint or at least gluing them together with some sense.

And this is the case with this movie. They made a soup of ideas from other films: vintage and sports cars, protagonists that get trapped in doing a "job" for the rich douche bag, pretty locations, chases, and cute faces.

But when you add in really bad acting, way too many plot twists and side characters, an absolute lack of chemistry between the main actors, boring racing scenes and some of the stupidest lines of dialogue one can only wonder how come no one realized it was destined to fail in such a loud way?

Speaking of loudness - here is a message to its creators: turning that goddamn volume up to 1 million won't make it more entertaining but instead leave its viewers with a gigantic headache.

I could, however, see 2 qualities in this racing flick: some pretty panoramic views of France (a la Fast and Furious, of course) and the protagonist half-brothers who actually felt like they were half brothers.

Teens will probably fall in love with the cute faces but otherwise, you should stay away from this poor man's Fast and Furious because it "overdrives" far from its inspiration points way up to the realm of too much, or too little. Drive Over it and go see something else.

Also, who the **** eats cereal at night?

Top Gear as an Action movie
j-m-w3 August 2017
Warning: Spoilers
Had to laugh quite hard at the end: A Car gets hit by a Truck, the car flies away in the air for like 2.3 seconds, then suddenly explodes in a heavy fireball. One of the best Actionmovie endings I've seen so far.

The rest is basically just a show-off of expensive car with a lame action story. Its OK to watch but nothing special. Has some weird Italian Jobs like twists, but they didn't fully reveal the whole twist in the end, or i just didn't understand. Anyway, doesn't matter. Action boom boom, cars, works for me.

Over-BAD
Alexfromparis23 August 2017
Warning: Spoilers
Do not waste your time with this movie. -Directing is bad: car chases are slow and the director does not give the audience a single frame that would surprise or be exiting to watch, a lot of editing mistakes, bad special effects (like the Porsche 911 that catches fire after a crash...). French companies were in charge of the special FX (umedia VFX and Digital District) and while they must have put a lot of effort to do their job with a budget...the result is laughable. -Acting is very bad: Scott Eastwood CAN NOT ACT. So does the rest of the crew... - Cars: We're talking about a car movie...and the cars were just ridiculous except for two... - Bad script: very predictable (if you didn't see the twist coming at the end...you're not very bright) - I would like to ask Mr. Scott Eastwood and the movie producers to refund my tickets for this movie!

My Kind Of Movie!

The reviews on this are very low which i don't understand. This is one of my favourite films and i love it so much. I don't know why people are rating it poorly as it's brilliant. Highly reccommend!

Pretty decent. Don't believe? Read below.
whotheff8 November 2017
Classic old school plot. Classic getaway. Classic cars. Classic chases but with beautiful shots of tight mountain roads. Pretty girls (only two of them). Nice soundtrack.

The makers of this movie failed to add depth to the main characters, because they shouldn't have even tried. The movie has enough pretty cars, two(yes, only two) pretty girls, decent pace which was watered down with shallow love stories. For some reason it gives the feeling that they cannot fail which spoils the thrill: "How are they gonna make it now!?". Yes, acting was cheesy, but convincing enough so you can bare it before the next chase. Clint Eastwood's son was so stiff, that I was expecting him to spit tobacco and to get on the horse at any moment now. The good thing - every single stunt was very real. No zero gravity, no "turn off the physics for a while" moments. Engine roar, rubber and grip. I would prefer this one before any of the last FF movies.

Goes downhill fast
Leofwine_draca8 June 2018
Warning: Spoilers
OVERDRIVE is a B-movie action flick which sees Scott Eastwood wasting his talents in a movie which is a complete clone of the FAST AND THE FURIOUS franchise. A couple of unlikely car thief brothers are tasked with, well, stealing a car from a rival crime boss, but the usual shenanigans play out and it becomes a desperate race for survival. Despite the nice-looking high definition photography, the presence of Eastwood (looking more like his dad than ever), and some very nice classic cars, this low budget oddity is something of a dud. It feels drawn out and cheap all the way through, and nothing that occurs is particularly thrilling. The best scene is undoubtedly the opening sequence, which has some great stunts and effects, but it appears that that's where all the money went because the rest doesn't match.

Nice cars and a scenic France...that's pretty much it...
mariusar26 October 2017
Warning: Spoilers
Not even the lovely and talented Ana de Armas can make this woeful Fast and Furious ripoff more interesting than occasionally pretty eye candy and car pr0n. What's even more tragic is that she's not given very much to do at all.

Compared with this one, most of the Fast and Furious films seem like Citizen Kane in terms of both plot and storytelling.

Two particularly laughable low points, which were kind of hard to come up with given that there were so very many in this film:

1: English speaking team leaders need a group of "skilled" drivers to be part of their crew. So of course, the finest levels of coordination and communication are achieved by bringing in a bunch of drivers that only understand French;

2: Priceless collection of cars is kept in a high security garage behind 15 foot tall, 6inch thick metal doors. After blowing the doors flat off their hinges, it only takes two guys to effortlessly move the doors out of the way so the cars can be driven out. I need to take whatever vitamins those folks are eating.

Say what you will about the F&F films (sheer brainless entertainment especially in recent installments), but there is no question most of the leads in the F&F films possess healthy amounts of on screen charisma. The same absolutely cannot be said of nearly everyone in this cast. There are no budding Wonder Woman's in the lot and Vin Diesel and The Rock are like DeNiro and Pacino in comparison to everyone here in Overdrive.

Scott Eastwood and Ana de Armas especially deserve far better than this pale F&F wannabe.

100% a film for car pr0n lovers only and those who want to see some occasionally nice shots of Marseilles and Paris - these elements elevate the score from a 4 to a 5.

That's it. Really, that's it.

Great car movie
ldsullivan-1318619 July 2019
Saw this movie in a shop and read the 'not great' reviews and to be honest if it hadn't been cheap i would have given it a miss, i'm glad i didn't! Just watched it and really enjoyed the cars and scenery, it's a great way for anyone into cars to pass a few hours. It reminds me of some of the luc besson movies the way it's filmed, like Taxi and transporter, of which i'm a big fan. Sure, it's got faults, but overall an entertaining movie and one i'd watch again.

Sadly bad
christianwestling26 October 2017
Warning: Spoilers
A lot has been covered by other reviewers so I'll just add the two things that bothered me the most.

You can't go and steal extremely rare cars. A random Ferrari; sure you can steal it and sell it in another country. But every Ferrari 250 GTO is numbered and known about. You can't just go and steal Nick Mason's 250 GTO and sell it to someone random. Interpol will be on you in no time.

Also, was Kemp a bad guy or a good guy? Did he kill the pilot? Did Andrew just think that was ay-okay? And how did they end up with the GTO in the end? Steal it from the guy that played along? Very confusing.

Could dial down the cheese
MeMyselfAndTheBeard13 December 2017
Warning: Spoilers
It was ok the film. These cars were the best thing about this film but I'm sure they were replicas. This film doesn't seem big enough for them too afford millions of dollars of cars on set. Scott Eastwood was ok bit cheesy at times could just dial back a bit a see a lot of potential in him I'm sure he'll be a badass leading man in the future for sure. The story line I didn't quite get seemed like we needed to know who the bad guys were first and why they're so bad I just didn't get it who was he and did he come to afford a 40 million dollar car why is everyone scared of him. I don't know seemed to be a lot of potential there to make this a quality car movie it just lacked in ambition and drive pun intended.

Overdrive: (very) stupid but enjoyable.
niutta-enrico10 October 2017
Scenery is great (Southern France seashore in Autumn), Opening scene is catching (none can deny it), Ana de Armas, Clint Eastwood's son together with other nice guys and beautiful girls help keep interested, script and direction are good (very professional), dialogue is entertaining… in other words this title is an 87 enjoyable minutes.

Personally I'm not fond of cars and I don't think the 'Fast and Furious' franchise was so clearly better. Surely it ain't more clever. So, if you like action movies and you want to watch something light, relaxing and entertaining, my suggestion is to feel free to enjoy without listening to needlessly scandalized reviews.

Overdrive? This movie struggles to find first gear.
stevenrotherforth17 June 2018
Warning: Spoilers
Overdrive

Another vehicle (pardon the pun) to further Scott Eastwood's slow to ignite career. The problem is it's movies like this that will slow his journey on the road to stardom. Eastwood is by no means the worst thing about this only just watchable action thriller. Think more Gone in sixty seconds rather than Fast and Furious.

Overdrive tells the story of two brothers played by Freddie Thorp and Scott Eastwood. The two get into hot water when they steal a classic Bugatti. I'll say no more of the story, only that the plot is more clunky than an old gearbox. This movie makes no real sense and it soon runs out of gas. With a short runtime of only 1hr 33 mins I am disappointed that Director Antonio Negret could not piece together a movie I could fully invest my interest in. I consider myself to be a petrolhead so the array of classic cars did stir some passion within my soul. Sadly though due to some amateurish acting, terrible dialogue and just plain silliness this film breaks down. More time is spent on product placement rather than good story telling. I did like the odd touch. The appearance of a Tag Heuer Monaco watch on Eastwood's wrist is a nice nod to Steve McQueen but they didn't need to keep showing it. The film also ran like a really long advertisement for BMW. The destruction of an M4 at the beginning did bring a tear to my eye. Shame then that the actual on screen drama could not raise any of my emotions.

Overdrive isn't a bad looking film. Viewed in HD it is a colourful movie. A particular marketplace scene allows colours to pop. There's some wonderful sweeping landscape shots too and all the cars look stunning in Hi-def. Sound is a let down though. Dialogue gets lost and overpowered by surround sound effects making it hard to properly hear what's been said. Not a real problem though as the script is B movie material at its most mediocre.

Overdrive is a movie trying to capitalise on the success of movies like The Fast and Furious but apart from the Carnography and the beautiful Ana de Armas as Stephanie, it ends up being a forgettable experience.

Great movie and very entertaining
smurfin-mail10 October 2017
Most people are comparing this movie to Fast and Furious series hence the low rating. They're just different even though both are involving expensive cars.

The plots might have been somewhere and done elsewhere, but this movie is still 10 out of 10 of its own. It's highly entertaining from start to finish.

Fun but nothing Special
about_cinema4 March 2022
Overdrive is a pretty fun movie, decent car action, ok characters. Overall it's not an awful movie to watch when you have nothing to do, but it is lacking in substance. The storyline is somewhat interesting but leaves a lot of plot holes. I wouldn't not recommend it but I also guess I would recowarn it. It's not the best film out there but there is far worse. I only watched it for Ana De Armas and she didn't disappoint, Scott Eastwood is pretty good and everyone else plays a decent part as well. Not disappointing but nothing to brag about.

This movie just doesn't work
tmpsvita6 July 2018
Yet another attempt, rather bankrupt, in search of the formula that has made certain movies extremely successful, traveling with very little grit and very low narrative ambitions the road of the automotive genre in cinema the already asphalted and traveled with knowledge of the by the now historical, mainly in the field of pure entertainment, saga of "Fast and Furious". The result is a useless film to which eats the elegance that desperately seeks, the grit necessary to entertain and a personality that could have made him at least distinguishable. The main problem is the unawareness of the director, who seems to have never understood what kind of film he should have shot. "Overdrive" rather than a gripping action film resembles a long advertising that can be perfumes, cars or simply clothing, in short, everything but a movie. If only Antonio Negret had paid more attention to the development of the plot, which is extremely trivial and hasty, or even just the same attention that he used to continuously frame the surrounding environment and faces as well as the bodies of the various actors, the film could also to work, let's say that the plot is also vaguely interesting and could have given rise to a film at least for entertainment. Even the cast is not at all helpful with the trivial and cloying interpretations and with a Scott Eastwood who seems to be trying to cover up his surname from film to film. It must also be said that the screenplay proves to be a major obstacle for them, with an extremely superficial writing of characters, an equally superficial characterization and an initial presentation of them that is extremely didactic and irritating. In short, the film is missing a lot of things just to be considered such but the biggest mistake is probably the fact that the director seems not to have noticed, given his pompous and presumptuous approach.
