The Boys from the Dwarf are back!
ben-woodward-495-1067676 October 2012
Warning: Spoilers
I've only seen the first episode so far and I will agree that it hasn't changed. Guess what we don't smegging want it to! If you love seeing Lister being a slob, the Cat being... well himself, Rimmer being a complete smeg head and Kryten being his usual rebellious sycophant then you're in for a great ride.

The show has changed slightly, the graphics are a little better, the ship they visit almost looks like a 'real' sci fi ship. I personally loved the nod to Mac OS X's spinning beach balls of death, however the essence of the show in my opinion hits the magic of the earlier, classic Red Dwarf.

A welcome return
Tweekums5 October 2012
Warning: Spoilers
Having enjoyed 'Red Dwarf' when it first aired on the BBC I was a little unsure when I heard that another full series had been made... after all by the time the original BBC run finished it was feeling a little tired. Luckily the creators had returned to what made the original so good; namely the four main characters being alone on the Red Dwarf mining ship. As soon as it began it felt like it hadn't been away!

Rimmer once again has taken and failed his astro-navigation exam; he says he is prepared to fail and will be able to deal with that outcome; inevitably he has a melt down. Lister meanwhile is trying to by a coffee-stirrer from a TV channel... having first mocked such channels and the people that buy things from them. They then discover an abandoned ship the SS Trojan. While there they receive a Mayday from Rimmer's brother Howard... a captain in the prestigious Space Corps... or so he claims.

I was surprised at just how good this was; there were plenty of laugh out loud moments, my favourite being the recurring references to moose causing traffic accidents in Sweden. Lister's attempts to make his purchase by staying on the phone for most of the episode were pretty funny as was its conclusion... largely because the viewer could guess the outcome. I liked the twist involving Rimmer's brother real position in the Space Corps; I genuinely didn't see it coming. There are of course quite a few other really funny moments but I don't want to include too many spoilers.

If this episode is anything to go by we are in for another classic series of 'Red Dwarf'!

I don't write reviews so I will keep this short

When I saw Back to Earth I wept a little as I thought they had ruined a once great series with bad jokes, crappy gimmicks, bad over the top special effects and a setup that looked far to clean and expensive to be Red Dwarf. After watching this episode I can confidently say that they have managed to rescue the series, everything looks a little dirtier and the jokes are funny again, perhaps there is still a bit too many special effects and the cast besides Rimmer seem a little awkward in their roles however I think that will change if the series continues and they get comfortable with the roles again.

Glad you back guys !

Great improvement over the Smeghole that was Season 9
Albicky735 February 2022
They clearly based this on the previous great episodes and not on whatever happened in Season 9.

Let's hope the rest of the season and those following are just as good. Return of a classic.

Pretty enjoyable start to series 10
snoozejonc28 December 2020
Red Dwarf discovers the a derelict ship.

I enjoyed this episode for the simple fact it captures the spirit of the earlier series, it contains some decent humour and reasonably good sci-fi concepts.

The story does not explain why circumstances are the way the appear to be given what transpired previously, but who cares? It feels like the crew are back where they should be.

I found the humour to be pretty amusing but nothing that really made me laugh out loud or contain anything particularly fresh. It is still mainly about Rimmer's pompous ineptitude and Lister's slobbery.

For me the second half of the episode when the guest characters arrive finds an increase in quality in terms of plot and laughs.

All performances are excellent, particularly Craig Charles. His acting skills have definitely improved tenfold over the years. The scene where he has a complete meltdown over an automated answering service is some of the most convincing anger I've seen from him. If you look back at the first Polymorph episode where he lost his fear and had to emote anger there is no comparison.

I enjoyed this one and hope series 10 will be more consistent than the 7 and 8 were.

Can the canned laughter
jlcrelly9 July 2018
I have given this episode and, for that matter the whole revived show two stars, not because of the quality of writing and acting, which is hit and miss. The big let down for the revived show is the decision to use canned laughter. I don't like canned laughter, but can tolerate a little, but, in this instance, a laughter track is added for every 'joke' or facial expression. It is not natural and, actually distracts from the very rare funny joke or scene.

What the smeg?

Warning: Spoilers
Was this supposed to be funny? I stumbled upon this by chance as I was zapping through channels and ended up passing DAVE, when this 1st episode (of how many?)of Red Dwarf Series 10 was about to start. I then remembered earlier announcements and decided to sit out the ride but already feared the worst, based on my opinion of Red Dwarf 9. Red Dwarf started ''difficult'' with series one, but then improved and peaked with series 6. Series 7 was mediocre, but series 8 with the nanobots' resurrection of ship and crew was in my opinion disastrous. Series 9 was smegging awful (if you can call 3 episodes a ''series'') and it looks like series 10 is following suit. The same old, same old ''jokes'' and encounters with clearly some modern and contemporary computer terminology input. Drained flanel actors as well. I didn't laugh at all, not even the ''having been put on hold to try to order an automatic stirrer'' sequence was funny. How can 50% of the IMDb-voters judge this 10 out of 10?

Have I missed something?
lopezpatricia-0613917 February 2019
Warning: Spoilers
The last red dwarf had the entire crew resurrected then they abandon a destroyed ship. The where the hell has the new red dwarf come from? Why rimmer back as H and no computer to make the decision that lister will be more sane with him? Why does holly come and go? Why does no one shove rimmer out an air lock cos he's just an awfull person? Also season 9 was beyond terrible. But all the others, I have loved.
