The only LDR episode that deserves mroe credit than it's being given.

"Maybe I'm gonna live forever, or maybe this is just one last dream before dying."

This one line (intentional or not) summarizes a great deal of metaphysical philosophy, and you'd be completely forgiven for not catching it, or not caring enough to ponder on it.

It's a comment about the absurdity of existence. How could an afterlife be any more absurd or unlikely than our current life? How can I be sure that this isn't the dream, and death just an awakening? Does the arbitrary line between self and other actually mater? Ect.

Again, you'd be completely forgiven for not giving a crap about metaphysical fluff, but don't mistake the lack of story for a lack of message. There is meaning here for anyone who cares to ponder it.

"To know you."

Warning: Spoilers
I really enjoyed this short. The art style reminded me Fish Night but out of the 2 I think this one is way better. The psychedelic parts made sense in the story & didn't feel like they did it for the sake of it. I also liked how they didn't tell you right away where this was taking place you can kinda figure it out when the main character starts her journey. And finally I thought the ending was beautiful. The fact that IO was trying to communicate as best as it could by quoting authors & the main character slowly realizing what IO was, beautiful; & then finding out what IO's function was what it wanted I thought was again beautiful. This short won't be for everyone but I think a select few will really appreciate it.

One for the thinking man....
gina_gemini23 May 2022
I am sure those who enjoy reading good sci-fi connected with this one. It had a brilliant idea at the core of story and in conjunction with thoughts on mortality, etc made one of my favorite episodes from this season.

Season 1 still holds on a much higher level, but I am glad this season was at least stronger than the second one.

I hope the creators give more weight to depth and cleverness of stories they pick, rather than going for the more widely appealing "video game" look and feel.

the episode is based on a short story by Michael Swanwick - do not be surprised that it is psychedelic

The great animation is the real highlight, the plot seems a bit thin. But at least it inspired the animation team to create this well-done graphic story.

These episodes are why I am a big fan of this show. You don't watch this show for the story (although the stories are awesome imo) but you watch it to appreciate the overall creative process !! The unique art styles that comes with every episode and the vibe are the show makes it an awesome project !

Keep up the great work !

Fish night 2: beautiful visuals, lack of plot
thefoochie20 May 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Decent episode with amazing and trippy visuals. Unfortunately, the animation carries the episode . The main "twist" of the episode is that the planet that the protagonist is on is actually a machine. Cool, I guess? I'm sorry, I didn't really care. She then runs out of oxygen and the machine convinces her to "join it" aka kill herself. Since the main character is high the whole episode, we still don't know if any of what she saw was real. I'm assuming it was real, cause her joining Io caused it to explode. Overall, this episode is just like fish night: Only watch it for the visuals. 6/10.

Can't understand why this is rated so low?

Warning: Spoilers
I love this show and it's episodes like this one that really exemplify why. It starts off with a pretty typical sci-fi plot but quickly evolves into something unique, beautiful, and unexpected.

For me, this is a story about the ebb and flow of living and how we are all connected. It's about the possibility of our souls living on-even after our bodies are gone-which is such a lovely thought.

It made me feel an almost indescribable feeling of hope mixed with deep sadness and I welcome those feelings. I'm just so happy this exists and I've had the privilege of watching it and being so moved by it. I've now re-watched twice and it just gets better and more meaningful with each watch.

Side note: I noticed at least one reviewer complaining about how dumb it was for Martha to drag around her dead friend when she was pressed for time and could always come back for her later. I guess they forgot that Martha's oxygen tank was damaged from the crash and she needed her friend's oxygen supply to survive. It wasn't like she could just swap outfits so she had no choice.

Not too good
gianmarcoronconi24 May 2022
The weakest episode of the season, too slow and with a plot that wants to be spectacular but it is normal and a little sloppy, then nothing can be said for the visual rendering which is spectacular, too bad it's just that.

Very underrated

Beautiful visuals, an engaging and by no means simple story, and great voice acting to boot. I was increasingly drawn in as the episode went on. You don't need to be high to appreciate this psychedelic episode.

Tried to be more than It is

Warning: Spoilers
The episode tries to go deeper in internal questions, be philosophic, poetic but the only thing that it does is to teach us that If you have an accident in space, please, don't use drugs. If there was anything deeper than this, I didn't get it.

If it has deep meaning, I missed it
detlic22 May 2022
Kind of pointless and makes little to no sense... Not quite sure what they meant with this one, TBH... Maybe it's just me and I missed the point, but this one seems dull and boring.

Spectacular visuals
maryochse20 May 2022
The artists and story tellers were so creative. Beyond the scope of imagination and parallels to dreams from another world. So beautiful and colorful. Every time I watch this series I never want any of the stories to end.

Another half story
rmmil21 May 2022
Warning: Spoilers
I get it, this anthology is mostly about "the tech" showcase, but would it kill these screenwriters to tell an actual complete story?

First of all, I'd like to ask why the heck was the astronaut dragging the obviously dead person back? Drugs don't explain this action, the still-living protagonist made that choice prior to any drugs.

It's not a battlefield, it's deep space. You are dying of oxygen starvation, you have very limited time, who the heck would make their desperate journey 10x harder by dragging the body with the big hole in it back? Just...pick it up later? It's space, not going anywhere.

To the plot itself, either the protagonist is just imaging everything per drugs, or she's not. We don't know, because they didn't finish the story. Like always in this anthology.

Oh, we loved this one. Sorry, we weren't high, though.
psn-9303623 May 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Seems some of the reviews here think this one is only for the 'druggies'. Whatever that's supposed to mean. Do you eat sugar? Like to drink alcohol? Have you ever needed pain meds? Drugs come in many forms.

Meanwhile we patient folk enjoy good story telling where it exists. If you need your food fed to you via spoon then you may not wanna try this one out. It's not only meant just for drug using individuals but I'm sure it wouldn't hurt to have the experience augmented by them.

Life is difficult and drugs, of all kinds, make it more bearable at times. You all take them, get off your judgmental high horse. Toss stones at your own house.

Also, all that music and art you love, made by doped up people finding their muse and enjoying the ride. Get over it.

This episode was just what I needed.

Poetry meets Space meets Machine

What an incredible piece of art this episode was, especially once it broke free of linearity and embraced some galaxy-level roots 🌌 Jokes aside, Emily (the director) you really put together something special here 👏

Pointless and doesn't deliver
bobetjo1 June 2022
The story sets itself up as survival against the odds and continues in a somewhat waffling vein until the last few minutes. But it was just not entertaining.

Mind-blowing
wedcollage29 May 2022
This episode showed me the story those kind I like the most. So slowly and atmospheric but at the same time the story gets you to mind-blowing knowledge. For the first we thought she was under drug's effect, but then... I'm pretty disappointed that not so much people enjoyed or understood this story. For me 2nd and 3rd episodes are the best of last season.

One for the Druggies
This was just all around bad. Didn't care for the animation style. The whole plot centers around the main character getting high because.... why not? She spends the entire episode dragging around a dead body which only causes her to waste even more oxygen than if she took the oxygen pack off from the corpse. And since she spends the whole episode high, we don't even know if what we are watching is real or just a bad trip. And frankly, I couldn't care. This episode is a massive skip for me.

Wouw
buenooo1927 May 2022
I dont know what to say. I saw the score for this here on IMDB and went into this episode a bit "meh, lets get it over with".

I got absolutely mind f'ed. I was left with a tear in my eye for some reason. Why? I think it was the art, the music, the poetry. It was such an amazing episode that will be with me for quite a while.

This season has been absolutely insane so far, but this episode touched me on a fundamental level. I do not expect it to do that to everyone, and to be honest, thats really not a problem. If you scored it a 5 or even lower, thats OK - I dont think this episode is for everyone.

But it was for me just wouw...

More credit than being given

Just wanted to check how others viewed this, and disheartened to see bad reviews. One of my favourite episodes of this series in its poetic nuances and beautiful dreamlike animation.

Lugging a corpse 41km rather than just there o2 unit???
james_r_webster31 May 2022
Warning: Spoilers
It's an interesting story and the animation is decent enough. Just a shame because the main premise of lugging a corpse 41km so you can connect to their oxygen supply seems pretty bizarre to me.

No method of detaching the o2 unit? If that's not an option then I'd of thought mutilating the body so it's lighter would have made more sense than dragging the whole thing?

Fell a little short.
Mauseum19 June 2022
Warning: Spoilers
It set itself up quite well with the quest for survival and I enjoyed the graphics/style used. It did however then slowly morph into the philosophical/psychological realm. I found it to be a little silly because she had to drag her dead companion for what was to be 41km to survive instead of just being able to take her O2 tank. Then the spirit/machine talked to her, but was it through her dead companion or did it just occur randomly or because she was high on drugs? And why wouldn't it have occurred before then if it was the machine?

Anyway, I liked the premise but it didn't really deliver and I believe it got lost in itself with not being more direct. I'm assuming that it was going for the philosophical, self-reflection story but having the character take drugs makes the viewer wonder if it's just a drug trip! I did like the references though and would been better explored in like a mini-series or something I think. This one off episode would probably have been better sticking to a survivalist narrative.

Superbly done, beautiful to watch and experience
classic-henry22 May 2022
Mackenzie Davis is perfectly cast in this existential, psychedelic musing. Frequently, LDR's concept episodes are their least engaging, but the visuals, sound design, and script for this one absolutely delivers. Everything feels ethereal amid life and death stakes and the conclusion feels conclusion feels natural and even serene.

Even though this episode is primarily a meditation on mortality and consciousness, it never feels like a philosophical exercise. Instead it feels like we're watching someone wrestle with these ideas in a visceral way, feeling the real implications of these cerebral notions.

This episode signals that LDR is getting closer to reaching its potential, and it's exciting.

Mesmeraising
kobaliyam20 May 2022
I watched this episode without breathing for the last several minutes. It has amazingly beautiful animation, music and voice acting, and you can't look away for a moment. The last scene resonated with me on a really deep level, the leap of faith, the belief in life greater, than dictated by your physical bounds, the fulfilment of being Seen and understood really captured the essence of being human, and left me in a. State of shiver and awe, and a feeling of connection with something greater.

I applaud the creators of this sincere and heartfelt observation of human condition.
