A gentle, real movie about four generations of a family in South Gippsland, Victoria, Australia. There are three interlocked stories linked by the main character, Geoff, who happens to have some bad luck. He is not helped by father who refuses to understand and a mother who is incapable of understanding and a wife (Kate) who has looked into the future and decided she wants to be somewhere else other than with Geoff. At the same time Geoff's grand-dad requires help, as does his son and Geoff does his best, even to stealing car batteries for grand-dad and stripping half naked for the Rock Goth band contest to beat all Rock Goth band contests to help his son. Lots of original music, some of it is just awful but that adds much charm. Dave Kelly is the quintessential country footy club president, Wilbur Wilde is beautifully sleazy. A beguiling cameo from William McInnes as a creepy scoutmaster and a wonderful performance from Clint Bizzell - a long way from his role as an AFL footballer. Kate Feldman is outstanding as the long suffering wife who finds a new life. Andrew Kelly is mesmerising as the priest at the funeral of Geoff's dad, as is Jane Kelly as a Goth Rock specialist TV presenter. Suspend disbelief and enjoy the ride, Grand-dad did - one of Charles 'Bud' Tingwell's last performances and equal to his best.
