Weirdly Fascinating...
vuileharry15 September 2022
I had to stop and drop a quick review on this episode.

Because even though this might be your typical 'love-it-or-hate-it' episode, I really think it deserves some special appreciation! This was NOT a lazy "o let's have Steve turn into a woman and Roger be a cowboy" episode, this is some seriously inspired thing!

Can you believe I watched it a second time? For the (totally weird) story? An American Dad episode..? And I wasn't sorry!

Okay, now they tell me my review is too short so I need to go on a bit now. Let me see.... something to tell you.... uhmmm something i did today something I did today... man this is hard! Where am I supposed to find more words to add, to make my review long enough? When I have already said all I wanted to say..? Man, I am not solving this one today, I'll just have to get back at y'all.

Gold Top Nuts
bobcobb30129 September 2022
Warning: Spoilers
This episode dragged at times, but this also perfectly summed up what the American Dad experience is all about: they take something as seemingly innocent and almost laissez-faire as a commercial from the late 80's or early 90's about nuts, featuring every sitcom cliche in the book, and they turn it into a wild episode of the show.

A lot of laughs in this one. Not the best way to wrap up the trapped on the island premise, but this was a funny episode. Loved the idea of the commercial and how committed they were to it for the first half hour.

Definitely one that makes me glad I still watch the show.

Another great surrealist episode

This is one of those episodes that kinda makes you think. It's mysterious, but also funny as hell. This episode is the definition of existentialism, where the family's memory is erased and they have to create a new reality based on their own observations. The fact that they see that commercial and view it as humanity is pretty funny too, as they begin to warship the brand of peanuts and then they leave the island to spread their religion, only for the new lighthouse to be a restaurant. This episode is a great example of how American Dad has still managed to write extremely creative and inspired plots in its long run.

Best and weirdest episode in a long time
Rooooguuu14 September 2022
Warning: Spoilers
In the same vein as Blood Crieth Unto Heaven and Rabbit Ears, Gold Top Nuts is one of those brilliantly weird and bold episodes true American Dad fans will love.

I have to admit, when I read the episode description, I did not expect the episode to veer off in such a bizarre direction. The Smiths are pissed an each other as they travel home from a terrible budget vacation that Stan purchased. The budget flight crashes and they wash up on the shore of a mysterious abandoned island. Their frustrations carry over as they try to pass the time but then, the episode takes an unexpected and philosophical turn when they lose their memories. Unlike your typical amnesia episode, where characters try to figure out who they are and what they should be doing, the Smiths take a much deeper approach, looking for a higher meaning in their surroundings (an abandoned lighthouse). Their only connection to civilization is a VHS recording of an 80s commercial for Gold Top Nuts, which forms the foundation of their entire belief system and culture.

Eventually, Stan accidentally destroys the VHS and they are forced to flee. Rather than ending the episode on a "and then they were rescued," the writers went a step further and look at the aftermath of their ordeal.

This episode would have been a brilliant two-parter. My only gripe is that they had to push things along too quickly in order to hit that 21-minute limit.

They've been trying too hard during recent seasons, especially with Roger's personas (I love Roger but his absence until the very end didn't hurt the episode in the slightest). And as they pointed out in the last episode, there's been too much Snot. Gold Top Nuts was a brilliant departure, showing us that the AD writers are still willing to take the occasional risk with abstract concepts.

Major bonus points for the attention to detail they've demonstrated during the last couple seasons. The short gag toward the end where Klaus crashes the orange pickup truck he won last season into one of the Sidewinder dump trucks he's obsessed with...lololol.

Also bonus points for bringing back Trish and the Sizzle, although Trish has had too many mimosas.

I have a good feeling about how this latest season is shaping up. We got through the early episodes, which are typically the weakest, and now that it's back from the break, we've had a Wheels and the Legman episode and this absolute gem.

In summary...Gold Top Nuts isn't an all-time great but it's absolutely a great episode. Only a Tiffany's boyfriend won't love it.

Super Weird But Super Interesting
cmalves-441974 October 2022
Warning: Spoilers
It felt very different from the other episodes this season. Still funny its own way, but a really neat concept and interesting takeaway at the end. I feel like I'm going to be thinking about this episode for awhile.

There is a required character limit on these words so I am going to keep typing out my thoughts and feelings about it. I think the concept of a magnet island wiping the Smith's memory and having them reconstruct their own society as a way to examine their relationships to each other and think critically about treating one another with kindness was really cool.

It definitely didnt pack the same laugh out loud humor we know the show for, but I think it's neat for a show that's been around for so long to mess with the formula every once and awhile.

This is American Dad! Doing What it Does Best
johnnykashed6 October 2022
This episode is a top 5 all time, right up there with Rabbit Ears. This is what American Dad! Does best. When the writers are allowed to really run with these bizarre ideas it always pays off. Also, over the last few seasons they've really managed to make me care about this family that's made up of terrible people. The humor has also evolved away from pop culture references into absurdism and jokes that rely on the characters or the world they've built. They've been consistently pulling the rug out from under my expectations this entire season. If you're a true fan and like the weird episodes, this will be one of your favorites for sure.

Worst one
evoapollo19 September 2022
Warning: Spoilers
I've actuallly found the newer ones somewhat interesting and this one had you wonder like wow. But it was a ridiculously long way of saying a message and the worse of it all was that the GOLD TOP NUTS DOESNT EXIST I WASTED A WHOLE episode promoting a fake brand of nuts. I was thinking why. Why would it do this? There's like maybe a few jokes here and there that wasn't the problem I mean it was funny but still. Waiting to watching Rick and morty and before that this is what was on before?! What a let down. I mean are the writers even trying anymore. Is this becoming family guy? I don't understand why they wasted an entire episode about a fake brand of nuts just to say a corny meaningful message. Lame. Do better.

Fascinatingly strange
nekonocti31 December 2022
Warning: Spoilers
I think about this episode a lot. They really took things in a weird direction and I loved every second of it. It was hilarious in its absurdity, though also has some thought provoking moments disguised as nonsense.

There's an eerie feel to this episode, and it seems to radiate a strong reverance. I think it was fabulous that we got to see the aftermath of the events of the episode, and the Smith's responses and takeaways are good. Overall, this episode feels special and is so absurd at times that we were laughing like mad on first watch, and quote it frequently.

They really put out the good nuts on this one, and if you don't think so, you must be a Tiffany's boyfriend.

A great episode for true American dad fans
rovert-mccarthy22 January 2023
If you're not a true American daddy this episode may not be great to you but if you're an OG to the show you'll be in stitches, from Stan putting on Steve's glasses to Claus in his orange truck that he won in season 16 and then poetically ramming it into the back of the same garbage truck that he's periodically been obsessed with since the season 12 episode "Garbage Stan" the ending was a little weird and cheesy for sure and if you're wanting something believable or even plausible, this probably won't be the episode for you but if you're on og daddy, this episode will be just as great as every other. Definitely a little different than other episodes but no worse.
