A good series finale, one with a nice twist.
Sleepin_Dragon10 April 2023
Humphrey is distracted after Martha's earth shattering decision, leaving Esther single handedly dealing with a case of burglary, when the only suspect has an alibi, one in custody.

Overall it's been a very good first series, and this final episode was pretty good, a solid mystery, but one with an incredible, unexpected ending.

The supporting characters all came good, Esther has been great since the off, Kelby has been amiable and sweet, but Margo finally offered a lot more.

I have to give huge credit to Kris Marshall once again, he's always very good, but here he was elevated towards awesome, he was absolutely brilliant, I totally believed in Humphrey's heartbreak, he was phenomenal here.

A few chuckles here, a solid mystery, but if was all about that incredible twist at the end.

Roll on Series 2.

8/10.

Loves Labours Lost?
ygwerin129 November 2023
A petty larceny occurs bearing the identical, M. O. of a known local nere-do-well one Atticus Styles, regrettably complications ensue when it transpires, that it may not exactly be as open and shut as it at first appeared.

Humphrey Goodman and Martha Lloyd, have been trying their best to build a relationship together, but it certainly hasn't helped to have an ex flame, Archie Hughes so conspicuously reappear into Martha's life.

However complicated life may appear on the surface, the perceived difficulties have been invariably exacerbated, by factors unrelated to ones personal life.

While the human beings among us may struggle, to carry on with our lives unscathed, we can most certainly guarantee, that their will be those who will use, our difficulties towards their own ends.

To be perfectly honest I was surprised to learn, that what amounts to a follow on show was to be made, of the further exploits of D. I. Humphrey Goodman. As my prevailing question just had to be, but why the heck make it, where's the possible motivation?

It was more by idle curiosity than with trepidation, that I actually got around to bothering with it.

So what is my corresponding overall verdict, of Beyond Paradise from its first completed series?

I can start by saying what drew me to it.

It has two of my favourite female television actresses, one Barbara Flynn that I have followed since the initial tantalising glimpse, of her as the Milk woman in the TV comedy Open All Hours. I can only hope that she remains for the second series, and that the writer extends her characters role, so we get the opportunity to see far more of her.

Secondly Felicity Montagu for me she has to be, one of the most underrated of actresses anywhere most certainly on the box, she is perfect in any role she plays, and as Margo Martins is a positive joy to behold.

Zahra Ahmadi is an acting revelation as D. S. Estrada Williams, her character is a perfect fit, that can only progress from strength to strength.

Dylan Llewellyn as P. C. Kelby Hartford, is also somewhat of an acting discovery, he makes the character his own, such that I can't imagine anyone else fitting the part.

I like most of the music most certainly the folk music, it's my favourite music folk and I do hope that it's by local musicians, as I feel that can help provide a feel for the locality.

Overall I like the show and feel that it has potential, I sincerely wish Beyond Paradise all of my very best wishes for Series 2, and I look forward to viewing it.

Does what the 'Joey' spin-off sadly never did

Warning: Spoilers
This was an excellent end to a series that promised a lot and has on the whole delivered.

I thought the mystery element was good, the ongoing Humphrey/Martha drama compelling, and the continued tone and feel of the programme as being its own beast is developing nicely.

This spin-off so far has been a triumph for me because it has done what all good examples of them should do.

It's kept enough of the recognisable elements from the original show and how the spun-off characters were in it, while also providing some new elements.

The newer characters have been able to have their own moments in the sun too, so we engage with them too.

This episode is also very clever at reminding us that this show is part of the 'Death in Paradise' world still, and this is so important.

Nothing worse than a spun-off character who looks like they're living in a paralel universe and have been ditched by their friends who never visit or are mentioned. Hi Joey...

Now that's an ending!! Season 2 - please!!

Warning: Spoilers
I sobbed when Humph returned to the island! Then to see the Selwyn, Neville, the Saint Marie police team, and Katherine...it just made me so happy! Humphrey is so at home there... he and Martha seemed so buoyant, which gives me hope for a more balanced season 2. I was not a fan of the infertility plot or the initial tensions in the police office. All seems to have been resolved on both of those plot points, and for that, I am elated! Kris Marshall is fantastic in this role... I hope the writers can regroup a bit and develop plot lines better suited to the personalities of these actors. I love the location and music, and even the crime plots were solid. I just think the writers missed on some of the character development. That can be fixed. I hope they think to read these comments, as it's clear how deeply devoted so many fans are to Marshall and his ongoing work as Humphrey. Not to mention, six episodes is a very short season to try to establish characters, plots, relationships, etc. Here's to a quick renewal and 12 more seasons!

Great end to a solid first season

Warning: Spoilers
After Martha called of their engagement Humphrey gets depressed leaving Esther to deal with the case all by herself.

It was fantastic to see the team in St marie again. Neville and Humphrey would be great friends i imagine

In the next series they need to give Martha more development. Sally Bretton is a great actress and deserves better. Just watch her in Not going out if you don't believe me.

I really hope the next series of Death in paradise starts where this episode ends. I would love to see the commissioner react to Humphrey naming the duck after him.

Here's to series 2 and the special.

One of the best cross-overs ever
safenoe5 July 2023
Warning: Spoilers
So much has been written about the ending of the season one finale of Beyond Paradise, and there's not much more I can add. The cross-over between Death in Paradise and Beyond Paradise. The cross-over wasn't just some cheap promotion or a "Hey look here! We want to promote an action star about to promote his latest blockbuster!"

This cross-over had heart. It had emotion. It had feeling. Sadly it didn't have Darlene (Ginny Holder) but still it had the rest of the current cast of Death in Paradise making Humphrey and Martha feel at home and feel together. That's what I like.

I look forward to season two of Beyond Paradise.

Episode 6
Prismark108 April 2023
A house burglary has both DS Esther Williams and DI Humphrey Goodman stumped.

The burglar stole some jewellery and made a sandwich. It has all the hallmarks of a renowned local burglar Atticus Styles, but he has a cast iron alibi.

A fingerprint recovered from the windowsill points them to Hayley Collins. However she was in police custody at the time of the burglary. She was a former girlfriend of the house owner and they had a dispute over a ring.

Meanwhile DI Goodman is distracted over his breakup with Martha. In fact he looks fondly to a little break in paradise.

The mystery was a little disappointing, it was easy to work out just who the offender was.

The fight between Goodman and Archie Hughes was silly. I could not help wondering of Goodman would be better off without Martha who has acted like a cold fish since they have arrived in Shipton Abbott.

At least the ending heated things up nicely.

What a let down
aislingdublin22 August 2023
Warning: Spoilers
Myself and my wife are avid detective show watchers

From Columbo to Morse to Midsommer Murders to Blue Murder. Every show brings something unique and entertaining.

One of our favs was Death in Paradise. Wonderful writing, characters and scenery

When I heard Beyond Paradise was in the making we were overjoyed. That joy lasted till 20 minutes into the 1st episode.

Weak characters and horrific soap like storylines.

I then commented that if they had to at any time go back to St Marie then it was a sign that the show was desperate. Sure enough here we go.

This show is more like a soap than any detective show i had ever seen. Horrible.

Its really fantastic however that Devon/ Cornwall is now more diverse and ethnic than London.
