Warning: Spoilers
I must admit I haven't seen the Boilerpoint movie, I haven't seen the Boilerpoint short, and I haven't seen The Bear. So I came into the Boilerpoint series afresh, and I actually found the series opener very powerful. The opening longshot was incredible, and something that would make Brian De Palma envious for sure. Anyway, we get to know the foibles of the characters and their interaction in the restaurant and on the home front, and you can feel the tension ratcheting up and up and up before the inevitable explosion and resignation and denouement.

I look forward to seeing the rest of season one.

Episode 1

This is a television spin off the BAFTA nominated movie of the same name. That was done in one take, with no disguised cuts like the movie 1917.

The movie ended with lead character Andy Jones (Stephen Graham) restaurant in ruins as he hit the booze.

Now some months later. Andy's Sous-Chef Carly (Vinette Robinson) has opened Point North but is in need of additional investors.

With potential investors dining tonight. Carly is pestered by her mother leaving her hot tempered Sous Chef Freeman (Ray Panthaki) to mind the shop. This includes dealing with a new chef Johnny Bale who is out of his depth.

The first episode has a long segment done in one cut before the opening titles start. Like the movie it is visually too dark.

Also like many dramas set in restaurant, there is very little new here. The first episode lacked spice.

Carly now a chef in her own right has a trajectory similar to Andy's. Maybe she bit off more than she could chew and Freeman has walked off. All the time, Andy is stewing in self pity. It seems Graham is a minor character in this show.

Warning: Spoilers
The original short and subsequent full length film were superb. This is a far cry from both. Plot line is ridiculous and immediately stretch credibility beyond all boundaries. Should have left it were it was. This is not worth watching

Sad because I was looking forward for it.

We are supposed to believe a chief owner would leave the restaurant during full service. That investors, who are terrible actors, would interview a cheif mid service. That a chief with no training could bluff his way through service and be rehired the next day. It goes on and on.

Should have had a firm rewrite. Hardly any Stephen Graham and it's much worse for it.
