"Are You Happy Now?"
That's a great question to ask...if it didn't involve Squidward in a really depressed state.
The biggest problem with this episode is...how is it supposed to be funny?
I understand Squidward gets the most hate as an unlikeable character in most of the episodes of Spongebob, but this is one of those episodes that we should be FEELING BAD for Squidward.
I understand "One Coarse Meal" got a tad bit morbid, but "Are You Happy Now?" was just DARK all around...and one that turned from TY-Y7 to TV-MA in just 5 seconds. THAT is amazing.
So...you may be wondering...how is this episode dark?
Well...actually. Two things...actually, no. Three things...and it's amazing that the viewers could have not noticed those things on why it got dark.
1) Squidward shows the same Spongebob look that near the end on Stuck in the Wringer, and the things he said that is just so far out of context to be put on a kids show.
The problem is...this isn't just some standard depression that Squidward is facing where it's manageable and especially one that can be helped with some outside help. This is one that has Squidward "driving off the deep end", and one that completely gets him into CLINICAL DEPRESSION.
He says "Wake me up when I'm dead" and "I'll never be happy" in the same episode!!! How is THIS funny?! A kids show like Spongebob shouldn't have the viewers listening to Squidward saying things like that! Think of what a child could learn from something like this!
2) Squidward sticking his head in the oven...only to pull out brownies.
Again, not funny, and especially something that shouldn't be showcased on a kids show. It's just emphasizing that Squidward's admitting defeat and it's just asking for someone to cook/boil him alive while his head is inside there.
3) Hanging a rope...for a caged bird (Bivalve).
This kind of joke is so bad, Nickelodeon should be ASHAMED for proudly showing it to the viewers, front and center. This kind of imagery is not something a child should see, especially if they get any "ideas" from it.
I understand Spongebob was trying to do anything in his right to try and cheer up Squidward, but unfortunately, this episode botched it up by not having Spongebob treat Squidward's "depression" with SERIOUS respect.
This is probably one of the WORST episodes from season 8 of Spongebob that shouldn't have happened...and I hope Nickelodeon seriously takes this episode into consideration because...this wasn't meant for kids. This looked more like it was made for adults!
