This 70-minute retrospective documentary provides plenty of interesting and illuminating information on the making of the hit comedy "Tootsie." Dustin Hoffman admits that not only did he feel unattractive as a woman, but also didn't want to do a falsetto voice and went as far as to consult a speech therapist to get the female voice for Dorothy Michaels right. Director Sydney Pollack reveals that he initially turned the movie down and decided to play the material straight instead of treat it like a broad farce (Pollack also had to be convinced by Hoffman to play the role of agent George Fields). Moreover, Jessica Lange had to be talked into doing the film, Teri Garr's part was specifically written for her, and Dabney Coleman based his portrayal of sexist director Ron on Pollack (Coleman was originally offered the role of George Fields). In addition, we also learn that the first draft of the script was called "Shirley," Elaine May did an uncredited polish on the script, Geena Davis was found in a modeling picture book, the make-up for Dorothy Michaels took a long time to perfect, and that Bill Murray worked on the movie for the last three weeks. Recommended viewing for fans of the film.
