Why The Hate?
bigunclem-740404 March 2023
First of all, I don't get the hate for this one. Not one bit.

After all the plotting, killing, and politics of late this episode is refreshing. Bang in the centre of it is a gentle (too gentle for some?) reminder of what the show is about: Family & the Montana way of life.

The fight I thought was a brilliant metaphor for change vs tradition. Beth talking of eating meat etc and Summer's admittance that her parents were vegetarian and she had never tasted meat. Again, a gentle dig/reminder that a lot of our values are merely hand-me-downs from our parents - that applies to Beth too. All she's known is ranch life = meat etc. I know that's a generalisation, but it serves as an example of what my interpretation of this episode is about.

This episode basically stops the whole season in its tracks and makes us remember the roots of the show - ranch traditions.

All in all a great episode and as always, the acting, writing, and production is stellar.

Great last 10 minutes
jorge_cs_916 December 2022
The ending montage with all the main characters gearing up along with their horses for their long ride followed by an amazing score is truly what Yellowstone should be all about. Having John Dutton take center stage and do what he knows best makes up for the terrible idea to turn him into governor just so he can save his land. Regardless of how sometimes the plot gets lost, Taylor Sheridan has truly created a universe and I hope we continue to delve into the old western values and traditions and less into Beth Dutton's antics. And more bunkhouse please, those guys are the heart of the story. Can't wait for next week's episode!

Beths new bestie
dolphiea5 December 2022
I think Beth and Summer kind of realize they are the same person. They may have been groomed in polar opposite universes (equally crazy!) But they are equally tenacious, have overwhelming personalities and are singularly maybe obsessively driven to fulfill their lifelong missions or die or kill trying!

Loved Rip's "Love of my life" speech to Beth. Shades of Jack to Wendy in The Shining. Very funny.

Beth's "liquid" diet must be adding more scars (this time to her liver) to what her poor outer body has collected, from past wars. She is literally turning into The Portrait of Dorian Gray.

It was nice to see Monica have something to have a giggle about.

Loved this episode!

Warning: Spoilers
John was right when he talked about people today complaining. Just look at most of the reviews. There are so many shows that cater to the woke crowd. I watch some of them and I don't come on here and complain. I'm reminded it's just a TV show. I enjoy the show even though I don't agree with some of it politically. This episode appeals to of course those who live a similar life as the Duttons, but it also appeals to those of us who just wish we could say half the things the Duttons say without getting canceled or tweeted about.

To the reviewer who said that women couldn't fight the way Beth and Summer fought must have grown up in a weird place because I have saw some women fights that made Beth and summers fight look mild. That comment was just stupid.

Loved the family aspect of the show. Loved what Rip did because that's how things are handled. Fight until one quits then learn to respect one another.

Keep up the good work Taylor!!!

Maybe the best episode I have seen for this show.
djetm5 December 2022
For me, when I started watching Yellowstone, it was mainly because of Kevin Costner.

The story they have put together here along these 5 seasons, have been truly beautiful.

I have thought that maybe this season will slow down, and I was not quite happy with the first episodes.

But then this episode happens.

I loved every bit of it.

The confrontation between vegan and you know who, was truly so so good.

Costner is still king, and Kit is perfect as his sidekick that was taken in when he had no place to go.

A bit of backstory is also very fitting.

I know that many of my fellow viewers share my opinion, in saying - this might be my favourite episode yet!

A hit in Australia
suzihands6 December 2022
This episode was talked about feverishly on Radio the day after airing.

Everyone loved it. The clash between Vegan angry and Just Plain angry, was something to see.

Rip's patience & understanding of his wife's personality is wonderful to watch. John's appreciation and insight of his children's personalities was so special.

It is great to see how much Carter and Tate have grown in size & maturity.

The epic ending to this episode when they all line up at the break of day and listen to John telling them what to expect over the next 2 days and the 'spike camp' they will have to endure at night, to bring the cattle down to the yards for branding, is momentous.

Then almost as an afterthought John says 'Yeehaw'.

I love this show and have done since the first episode.

Anything Taylor Sheridan has a part of, turns to Gold. I do not want to be in his mind with all the ideas and thoughts he must have.

You could say; "They're phoning it in"
brooksrob16 December 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Everyone is a Monday morning Quarterback... I don't envy the writers that must make the mundane palatable for the easily distracted, or easily offended, as I see in the comments...

The fight between the girls was ridiculous and I recognize the hand of the dramatist involved. Beth, despite her seemingly caustic nature is splendid in her righteousness. She gives a true strong woman's perspective on the entire lifestyle of ranching. She'd be a rarity in the real world; from high power executive to rolling in the dirt...She's so strong, she wouldn't need to throw hands, but...Such are the formulas so prevalent in today's movies and shows...

This show is a fine piece of art, and as in any fine piece of art, it has flaws, it doesn't distract from the beauty of the overall piece. Every episode is a 10!

One of the best endings in the series...
christiankennedy-7010922 September 2023
Wanted to hate this episode for the excessive & seemingly unnecessary dramatics but it was understandably necessary and fitting considering the characters involved.

Season 5 has been a well orchestrated Rodeo that's fleshed out some necessary details of one the most incredibly complex, challenging and endearing cast of characters ever assembled.

Taylor Sheridan knows people and while his own idiosyncrasies and personal assumptions occasionally bleed through with obvious bias, there's no denying that his characters are mostly authentic.

Sheridan is a modern day McMurtry but it's my opinion that his disdain for God, Faith and any notion of Divine Creation (at least by his Characters) is nonsense and reason enough for societies suffering.

Regardless of what you believe about anything. There's only one sad conclusion... Man is the cause of societies suffering...

John Dutton knows, Rainwater knows, Mo knows, but everyone is gonna is gonna learn.

Kinda a double standard
mrs_hood4 March 2024
Warning: Spoilers
Ok, I loved the girls fight scene. Not only am I a fan of Beth, but I couldn't believe Summer was that disrespectful in someone else's home. I think that is more disgusting than eating meat (but I am a meat lover so I guess that makes me bias.) I love how Rip dealt with the girls... in the end. But I really don't understand his as well as John's problem with them going at it. It is literally a THING with the bunkhouse when guys have a problem with each other they literally have it out with each other to get it out of their system... So why is there such a problem when the two women do the same? John even states to Rip they need to get it out of their system, and them is disappointed after they do. I mean. What did he expect would happen when he brought her to his house? That everything would be a house of peace and tranquility?

Seems lazy and missing valuable perspective
pjp19606 December 2022
The season, so far, has been much too violent without offering more nuance, all around. This episode continues to be inconsistent. I am particularly disappointed in the storyline with Beth. I struggle with the whole vegetarian/vegan issue, too, because I know there is a way to raise animals and manage land properly. But, to not have "Monica" (another character who has shown poor judgement this season) contribute the Native American perspective was a lost opportunity, as I believe therein lies the balance that is needed. Why not all three of the women getting into an intelligent (and heated) debate instead of a brawl between two of them? I assume this is all setting up the idea that well managed "ranches" can be relatively responsible in terms of the environment (agreed!). I just hope that is played out more effectively the rest of the season.

Watch 'Em Ride Away
bobcobb3017 December 2022
Warning: Spoilers
If there is one noteworthy thing about this show it is that it will give us those big long fight scenes. We've had a few noteworthy ones over the years and got one here as Beth and Summer went out.

Beth continues to be absolutely unlikable, but maybe this will lead to a slightly calmer persona down the road. We can only hope.

Overall though, this episode just kept dragging and dragging and I was wondering how long it would be until it wrapped up.

Yellowstone has a huge fanbase and a formula that works for them, but honestly, a lot of the episodes are dull and lifeless. I kind of worry how it built that huge fanbase.

BruceWayne36 December 2022
Beth is absolutely the worst Way too much dialogue that means nothing The show use to be entertaining Now it's the same thing over and over - Beth is trying to fight someone in every episode Is this getting old to anyone else ?

Honestly what was this episode about ?

Beth fighting and And And Come on We don't tune in for a wrestling match Bring back the good story lines like that of seasons 1-2.

They wasted this entire episode talking about a ride that is going to last (2) days I literally summed up the episode in one sentence.

This is the best the writers can do ????

The next episodes need to be epic in order to make up for a lackluster season 5.

Couldn't find a weak episode till now
vovazg28 March 2023
Warning: Spoilers
Yellowstone has the whole concept made on firm ground. There's the cowboy life, beautiful ranch and nature, great dialogues, principles to fight for and always interesting events, twists and plots with worthy adversaries. This episode started with an intro where chief Rainwater agrees to meet with John Dutton and immediately in the beginning John cancels all the meetings. Why intro that didn't have anything to do with the episode? Second is the unnecessary attempt to promote nutrition values. Today's world works with parelel truths mutually colliding or correlating. Nutrition is just one of many. There's no way to prove to a vegan why slaughtering another life is justified for the sake of taste. Especially was pathetic attempt with 4 stomach theory. And goes the same the other way around to prove to meat eaters that meat is not good. To much time waisted to prove what, my lifestyle is better than yours? And they tried to be "too cool" and fist fight about it. Probably for frustrated people that would be a desired solution. So woman handled it like men and one tooth less after they showed each other respect. This is how we do it here one says. Like it's something special. And then the last week point comes with the mythical showing of riding out to the mountains. Like they're solders or superheroes. Fog was there. Soppy music. Tear down the eye. And a stupid sentence that's supposed to be wise. Whey too much dosage of pathetic that left a taste of forced that tried to hard to show it's special. If it's special it doesn't need this kind of promotion. Everyone beeing cool lined up while looking full of themselves. There are harsh conditions in the whole world and people living their lives with strength and dignity. There's no theater about it. Taylor Sheridan is slightly loosing the grip of natural flow it seems. Which is normal considering how much quality he provided until now it's incredible one person did all of that. My hope is this is a slipup in quality the show can afford and they will avoid the pathetic emotional promotion of look at me-I'm special in my pride lifestyle. Fingers crossed 🤞

Manufactured drama and cheesy dialogue
ALH757 December 2022
This is so bad. Not thrilled I bought the whole season. I haven't checked the writing credits, but it's no where near where the previous seasons were. I'm embarrassed watching this during the dinner and then the following scene. It is now a sad, cheese ball soap opera. Most of the actors are doing what they can, but the laughing at dinner and pretty much everything Beth has to say is so contrived. Beth's sass is more impactful when it's applied sparingly. But when everything she says is inflammatory, you just can't take her seriously anymore. Hoping this turns around and moves away from straight drama back to engaging storytelling.

Everything wrong with this episode
quockquock6 December 2022
First of all, the girl fight was ridiculous. Beth gets a tooth knocked out and instead of one of the richest people in Montana going to the dentist, she goes for a two or three day roundup. They just had a Governor's election so it should be November or December, but they are going on a roundup in Montana. Where's the snow? Where's the cold weather? They are going to "cold camp"? What is that? They can't take cots or sleeping bags? They can't fly the Yellowstone helicopter up to the campsite and dump of load of provisions or food? Not one of the cowboys can lead a pack horse with provisions? Instead are they just going to eat beef jerky for two days? It seems Beth is always on the go, in meetings, going to bars, driving her car to Helena, but she suddenly had time to take 3 days off so she can "wrangle"? I don't even care about Kasey, his wife or Jamie this season. Very boring writing. Poorly directed as well. Also it just seems unbelievable that a newly appointed governor can just take 3 or 4 days from the office, cancel all his meetings and be out of phone range up in the mountains, while his state has no one governing it. Plus the fact that the entire crew of wranglers have to just sit on their horses and can't make a move until John Dutton makes an appearance and gives his little speech. Can't a few of the wranglers just mosey on ahead to scout out the area. Just silly writing.

Poor writing on display
rbost-702336 December 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Who talks in front of people at a dinner table that way? After you get sprung out of jail by a benefactor who happens to be the Governor? Then you have an all out cat fight in the front yard that ends up being punch trading till Miss Greenpeace has had enough? This show is entering a lagoon filled with sharks. The scenery won't carry Yellowstone nor will Costner's epilogues on FoxNation. The writing and direction need to tighten up. Also, Kasey's issues are simply a drag. Nobody cares. Even his whiney wife is sick of it. Beth Dutton is a train wreck but that's obviously a main storyline and the writing and direction are wed to that concept. If I were Kevin Costner I'd take a two week hiatus and suggest the writers take a two week crash course in scripting.

There is a shark in the middle of Montana......
Thomas-FordJr-16 December 2022
Warning: Spoilers
And this show is about to jump right over it!!!

I must admit...I'm a HUGE fan of this show, and the first 3 seasons arguably the best thing on TV, since the first few seasons of 'Game Of Thrones'. But this show has definitely lost it's way over the last season and a half. And there are some things/moments in this show, that have brought us to this point:

1. Beth has been laughably over the top crazy, since the show began. And this psychotic portrayal of her, has only intensified(for the worse) over the last 2 seasons. Anybody in the real world, who acts like Beth, would be in prison, a mental institution, on the streets, or dead. They definitely wouldn't be wealthy and successful, due to all of the legal problems and lawsuits(and subsequent loss of jobs) they'd constantly face. Not only is it unbelievable and ridiculous, it's gotten VERY OLD!!! We've seen the same tired act for 5 seasons now. And instead of Sheridan changing course with her, or having her actually face some real consequences....he lays the Beth act on even thicker(sigh). Tired of seeing her on screen, just tired of her.

2. Besides Beth, Monica has the be the poorest character on the show. Everything about her is always so somber, depressing, brooding, and this all feels forced. Yes we know, she's comes from an oppressed group of people, and grew up on 'The Res'. But she has a VERY good life, and chose to marry 'The White Man'(Casey), and have a family with him. You can't be privileged, then act like you're not privileged, all in the same breath. And the plot device of her losing her baby, just made no sense. She nearly about to pop, and the plan is to have her drive herself to the nearest hospital? Who in their right mind would devise a plan like that? And if Casey could have someone meet her halfway, then he could have had someone go all the way to pick her up from home. And of course she drives herself, crashes because of labor, and loses the baby. I'm not making light of her losing the baby, but the scenario to set this up was just unrealistic. She'd be safer just staying at home and possibly having the baby there, than getting behind the wheel in that condition. Just sloppy writing to set up more sympathy for Monica.

3. Taking John away from the ranch, and having him be elected Governor, has deteriorated the fabric of the show. John IS YELLOWSTONE, and everything about Yellowstone, is having John protecting his land, ON HIS LAND!!! Making him some bumbling, reluctant politician, has really taken away from his character. John is a hands on guy, and he's at his best when he's on the front lines. This move was an even bigger blunder, because *** DUHHH ***, you have a savvy politician in your household(Jamie). Jamie running for Governor and winning, would have made sense, and kept with the spirit of the show. John fights the fight with his hands, Jamie fights the fight the legal way/paperwork way. Having them both politicians isn't the way to go.

4. And besides John, perhaps the best character on the show, Rip, has become a caricature of himself. Him following Beth around like a puppy, and agreeing with every dumb suggestion she makes, has just watered him down to the point of nothingness. There is NO WAY, the ranch foreman, would let his cowboys go out on the town, when there's work to be done the next day. And there is NO WAY, the ranch foreman, would put the safety of his cowboys, and the well being of the ranch...behind the wishes of his psychotic Wife. Time and time again, we see the once no-nonsense Rip, get steamrolled into bad decisions by his Wife. And the flashbacks to justify this behavior(Rip has always been treated bad by Beth), do the opposite. In reality...Rip, or anybody else that had been treated like that by someone else, would have NOTHING to do with that person. Another case of bad writing to drive silly plot devices. And the casualty of this, just happens to be arguably the best character on the show.

5. But perhaps most damaging...is that the feel of the show is not the same. You can definitely tell the show has lost it's way. The ground war that has been fought between the Dutton Ranch, the Native Americans, and the outside corporations, is all but gone. The day to day struggles of life on the ranch, are all but gone. This show has basically turned into a corporate/political/paper war. We can watch a series called 'McDonalds vs Burger King', for that.

Awful
jmheim-889616 December 2022
Warning: Spoilers
This episode was ridiculous. C'mon Kevin and Taylor! Get the writers to give us something believable. The Beth character is one dimensional at best. She's boring. The fight scene was beyond unbelievable....no female could withstand that kind of fight...maybe professionals but not the everyday woman. Plus no woman could hit continuously without damaging their hand. I'm trying to make sense of the writing this season.

The dinner scene with Kacey's wife giggling??? Once could be believed if she thought it was awkward but more than that just not believable, unless she was drunk! Im still scratching my head over the dinner scene. Who sits at a strangers table with people they don't know and insults the food??? I get Summer is considered environmental-minded but geeez. Have the chef make you a salad for crying out loud! Writers!!! Give me something believable!

Summer asking what she was going to do for 2 days while they were gone??? Really?? It's just two days! C'mon! So she'll go walk the ranch, like Beth suggested, and ?? She's going to find the dead wolves???? That storyline was too obvious.

I'm not the brightest bulb but this storyline has been unbelievable and disappointing.

This is it for me
TruthbeTold26266 December 2022
I cant watch this show anymore after this episode. Everything so far in this season has been pure nonsense. Anything with monica is utter garbage. Beth needs to go. This show is truly terrible this season and i am calling it quits. The hippy plot is dumb. There is nothing remotely interesting happening this season. I cant see where this is going. Maybe a hurrican randomly hits and wipes out the ranch and takes the entire family out. The jamie plot line is dumb. This show is circling the drain at a rapid rate. I will not be watching anything else realted to this series. Hurry up and make something happen.

Unbelievably bad
acgunter7 December 2022
Warning: Spoilers
This episode is unbelievably terrible. Terrible dialogue writing, cliche stereotypes about a character who eats a vegan diet, a pointless brawl that goes on way too long. Beth has been a character who is unbearable to watch for way too long. Writers desperately need to write her out to salvage this show. In the real world, no one would want anything to do with such a bipolar psychopath. Any opportunity to get rid of her has been passed up, driving this show deeper into the ground.

I'm not sure if writers have gotten lazy or the creators are too distracted by their other projects, but the complexity of the story and dialogue this season is at a sixth grade storyteller's talent level.

Beth's nastiness
redinnevada8 December 2022
Warning: Spoilers
I am and have been a diehard Yellowstone fanatic, emphasis on the fan. I don't even care when red hats swear up and down it's THEIR show despite the very heavy hand of "woke" aspects liberally (haha) sprinkled in the series. Yellowstone has something for truly just about everyone.

But after 4 years of watching I finally felt the need to review. Because this episode BOTHERED me. It's NOT Yellowstone worthy. It's sole purpose felt designed to fill in the hour with scenes that will segue us into the 1923 presentation. After the fight (more on that below) John Dutton specifically says the family has always had to fight to get the land, then fight to keep it so in one sentence he brushed off the fact that his daughter is a disrespectful hooligan who feels the only way to solve a problem is with nastiness or punching. Apparently he LOVES that she does it even while he's threatening to ground her (that's what every chastisement he serves up at her is-like she's a teenager). Yah good old-fashioned values for sure. Yeehaw.

As others have covered, this show has become WAY too much about Beth and her rampant nastiness followed closely by her acting like a petulant mewling kitten to get what she wants out of Rip. Meanwhile Rip's backbone has somehow been left in a pasture to rot somewhere. He can dish it out to the guys, but when it comes to her he's a pandering lounge lizard. It's getting to be a HUGE turn-off. Especially since we KNOW that the only real reason Beth got Rip (he's so far out of HER league it's ridiculous) was because he DIDN'T let her call all the shots. Beth needs to go to jail for something, they've got tons of reasons to choose from since she walks around all day looking for someone to threaten and vandalize. Please...1 six month sentence. Knock the brashness right out of her. Fix everything Daddy John never thought he needed to teach her.

I am not a Summer fan at all. I actually DO advocate for environmental changes, protections, regulations and oversight. But I am the daughter of an Oklahoma cowboy and great/great/great granddaughter of a 100% Chiricahua native. My grandmother's story is phenomenal and actually in a few (local) history books. So my whole belief system coincides with the cowboy and native philosophy. Take care of the land, but it's also there meant to help US survive.

Summer is an elitist that needs to go back to California beaches or her commune. And not because she's a "hippie" as some have said (she is) but because she's an arrogant know-it-all who thinks that just because she stomps her feet she's gonna get what she wants. And John actually LIKING her is just...it's not even fathomable. I didn't think so last season and I'm REALLY not on board with it now that they've written it into the story line that she has to be involved 100% of the time! If there's any ONE thing that'll make me stop watching, it's this. She doesn't just not fit. She been written into the show for a dramatic affect that makes NO sense. It's insulting to us.

The fight? Whooooeeee.... I thought it was ridiculous. But given what Summer acted like at the dinner table I actually liked watching it happen. Thing is that's all MANUFACTURED outrage scenarios. It's got no real purpose! Beth and Summer would NEVER come to some mutual understanding given their personalities and here's the thing. They don't HAVE to! Mark my words, it's going to come about that they show the elitist how she's wrong to judge cowboys just because she's a vegan. This is ridiculous. Who cares if they can get that point across? I don't!

But Beth's behavior at the table was WORSE! Because her daddy had told her to NOT DO IT since it was all family for once. She did it BECAUSE he told her not to! She couldn't stop herself! Childish temper tantrum. AGAIN.

The ONLY saving grace of this episode? Monica's laughing at them all. She said it straight up and laughed AT them. Which made a sad Kayce laugh too. THAT was the only few minutes to enjoy this episode.

They better get rid of Summer soon or I'm gone. I can't standthat stupid storyline. And give Rip back his b@lls. They'll find them in Beth's mouth.

Beth is the worst since Gemma on SOA
discostu0046 December 2022
If you're out of ideas just end the show. If my broad wasn't watching I would fast forward every time Beth is on screen. It's like she's got blackmail on the writers and she is making them include her everywhere. A 15 minute long ridiculous fight? My braid loves the show and even she said "this is just stupid".

They brought back the hippy girl for some reason. She's living at the ranch and Beth thinks she's sleeping with dad. If she is, who cares but the writers somehow think the patriarch wouldn't tell his dumb bossy irritating daughter to shut her trap especially since everyone knows she spent much of her life sleeping with total zeros. Just awful.

Monica and Summer next episode
burntorange10 December 2022
Warning: Spoilers
I'm thinking that Monica and Summer will have a chance to talk while the others are off branding.

Summer could learn so much from Monica and I like Beth's advice to Summer to walk the ranch and the land..all of it. Monica would be the ultimate guide.

I see them getting into some deep conversations and Monica will help Summer make a breakthrough.

Speaking of Beth, I could not believe John said he envied her.. why? Because she is unladylike and a bully? Rip and Carter have to be losing respect for her.

I like the branding storyline but with Beth going they'll be more fighting ugh.

And what it is up with John's assistant? I hope she knows better than to say anything to Rip on the trip LOL.

Isn't this supposed to be a Western ??
ruthszulc22 December 2022
I loved this show so much.followed every episode, as an Australian, we travel to Western states there every year. But this show is now NOT a western. It's all political, Beth damn annoying as the head actor now, and we hardly get to see RIP and the cowboys, we just see damn Beth and John Dutton...ugh. Come on, make this show popular again. Boring !!!! Who cares about Duttons new job, who cares about Beth's disgusting way to look and act. Need to see more of the Native Americans and the country. Not a damn office every day. And John Dutton should stop sticking his tongue in his check EVERY time he talks. AHHHHHHH !!!!!

The excessive Beth stupidity is killing this show
Pigeon_down30 January 2024
Warning: Spoilers
I love Yellowstone, but this episode was just nonsense. I'm on Season 5 Episode 5 and the overall show is great. But, the Beth character is so out of control, never ending moaning and whining and basically she's weak and uses aggression because she can't handle her life. But this is over the top now.

The fight - Beth vs Summer - the writers need to do some research here. Apparently Summer has 9 years of Jiu Jitsu training. I have circa 30 years of it. At 9 years of training, a woman of Summer's build would mangle most men in a one on one. In fact, the degree of control she'd exert over Beth would be exactly the wake up call Beth needs in this show to shut up the constant vitriol and rage against life she puts out.

All the other characters work. John, Rip, Jamie sort of works but he's the antithesis of Beth, she's ridiculous in how aggressive she is in the writing, Jamie is ridiculous in how weak he is.

A bit more balance in Beth and Jamie would really help the show. I literally want to fast forward through the Beth scenes now.

Let's see how the season plays out, but please, Beth is a character that could be strong, instead she's written as an angry smoking drunkard.
