And this show is about to jump right over it!!!
I must admit...I'm a HUGE fan of this show, and the first 3 seasons arguably the best thing on TV, since the first few seasons of 'Game Of Thrones'. But this show has definitely lost it's way over the last season and a half. And there are some things/moments in this show, that have brought us to this point:
1. Beth has been laughably over the top crazy, since the show began. And this psychotic portrayal of her, has only intensified(for the worse) over the last 2 seasons. Anybody in the real world, who acts like Beth, would be in prison, a mental institution, on the streets, or dead. They definitely wouldn't be wealthy and successful, due to all of the legal problems and lawsuits(and subsequent loss of jobs) they'd constantly face. Not only is it unbelievable and ridiculous, it's gotten VERY OLD!!! We've seen the same tired act for 5 seasons now. And instead of Sheridan changing course with her, or having her actually face some real consequences....he lays the Beth act on even thicker(sigh). Tired of seeing her on screen, just tired of her.
2. Besides Beth, Monica has the be the poorest character on the show. Everything about her is always so somber, depressing, brooding, and this all feels forced. Yes we know, she's comes from an oppressed group of people, and grew up on 'The Res'. But she has a VERY good life, and chose to marry 'The White Man'(Casey), and have a family with him. You can't be privileged, then act like you're not privileged, all in the same breath. And the plot device of her losing her baby, just made no sense. She nearly about to pop, and the plan is to have her drive herself to the nearest hospital? Who in their right mind would devise a plan like that? And if Casey could have someone meet her halfway, then he could have had someone go all the way to pick her up from home. And of course she drives herself, crashes because of labor, and loses the baby. I'm not making light of her losing the baby, but the scenario to set this up was just unrealistic. She'd be safer just staying at home and possibly having the baby there, than getting behind the wheel in that condition. Just sloppy writing to set up more sympathy for Monica.
3. Taking John away from the ranch, and having him be elected Governor, has deteriorated the fabric of the show. John IS YELLOWSTONE, and everything about Yellowstone, is having John protecting his land, ON HIS LAND!!! Making him some bumbling, reluctant politician, has really taken away from his character. John is a hands on guy, and he's at his best when he's on the front lines. This move was an even bigger blunder, because *** DUHHH ***, you have a savvy politician in your household(Jamie). Jamie running for Governor and winning, would have made sense, and kept with the spirit of the show. John fights the fight with his hands, Jamie fights the fight the legal way/paperwork way. Having them both politicians isn't the way to go.
4. And besides John, perhaps the best character on the show, Rip, has become a caricature of himself. Him following Beth around like a puppy, and agreeing with every dumb suggestion she makes, has just watered him down to the point of nothingness. There is NO WAY, the ranch foreman, would let his cowboys go out on the town, when there's work to be done the next day. And there is NO WAY, the ranch foreman, would put the safety of his cowboys, and the well being of the ranch...behind the wishes of his psychotic Wife. Time and time again, we see the once no-nonsense Rip, get steamrolled into bad decisions by his Wife. And the flashbacks to justify this behavior(Rip has always been treated bad by Beth), do the opposite. In reality...Rip, or anybody else that had been treated like that by someone else, would have NOTHING to do with that person. Another case of bad writing to drive silly plot devices. And the casualty of this, just happens to be arguably the best character on the show.
5. But perhaps most damaging...is that the feel of the show is not the same. You can definitely tell the show has lost it's way. The ground war that has been fought between the Dutton Ranch, the Native Americans, and the outside corporations, is all but gone. The day to day struggles of life on the ranch, are all but gone. This show has basically turned into a corporate/political/paper war. We can watch a series called 'McDonalds vs Burger King', for that.
