Words cannot describe...

I am all for supporting locally made TV shows and will always watch new shows that come out of New Zealand, just to give them a chance. I recorded the first episode of The GC, but didn't watch it when it was on. The following day, every conversation was about how awful the show was, but I decided to watch it anyway, just to form my own opinion.

Awful is an understatement.

These guys are arrogant, uneducated narcissists with very few redeeming features. They make the Jersey Shore cast look classy and lovable. It is humiliating to think that people are watching this, thinking that all Maori are like them. It is a mortifying representation of Maori, New Zealanders in general and the Gold Coast. It will only add to the stereotypes that Maori have been fighting to leave behind for decades.

Aside from the general unlikeability of the cast, the thing that drove me crazy the most was how scripted it was. They were bad actors reading off a bad script. There was not a single scene that seemed like they were actually having a real conversation or showing any authentic part of their lives. I have seen primary school plays with more convincing actors.

It is unfortunate that NZ On Air thought that it would be a good idea to fund such a travesty, especially when there are some great NZ shows out there that could use the money much more efficiently.

I only watched the first episode (and only just got through it!) and will not be tuning in again. Based on all of the comments I have heard or read, it doesn't sound like they will have the ratings to continue - which is a small mercy!

Warning: Spoilers
I have recently been back to NZ (Born and Bred) and watched the GC, what a classic. It is todays reality show of the classic take the mickey movie "Boy". There are some hard critics out there and don't have much of sense of humor, I grew up with Billy T James and he always took the mickey of his own race and others, lighten up you serious down and out critics, have a laugh at yourselves, deep at heart there are those characters in each town of NZ, this happens to be on the GC Australia. Good on the characters who have put there lives on the big screen in hope to make it rich, I think there is a piece in each of of us that would be happy for them to make it. And for those behind the scenes and channel 3 who have made this program, I only hope they air it in Aus, it would be a hit I reckon.

Great light entertainment

I was a bit skeptical watching this series after seeing the adverts promoting it when they first came on as I thought it was just another Jersey Shore and after seeing the train wreck that was 'The Shire' I thought this has to be better.

Initially took a bit to get into but after giving it a chance I totally fell in love with the characters. Although the show is soft-scripted, the guys manage to inject their own style of humour into it.

Everyone who watches it will have their favourite cast member (mine is Jessi Nugent) but I understand the show won't be for everyone as the story line mainly revolves around their relationships and interaction with each other.

I would have liked to see more on Coles' MMA Gym but hopefully there will be a Season 2.

In summary, The GC is great light hearted comedy that is streets ahead of Jersey Shore and hasn't got the bad reputation that Jordy Shore has managed to somehow make it popular. It's about a bunch of Maoris trying to make a new life in Australia and have some fun along the way. Good luck guys!
