Just as you think that the issue of slavery will not be brought up, the horrors of that travesty are when Washington prevents families from being separated, referring to the long time practice as an abomination. It's like the musical "1776" brought up the issue, and in the second part, George meets his future vice president (and the second president), John Adams, played here by Hal Holbrook, already a famous portrayer of very famous Americans. The revolutionary war, hinted at in part one as issues with the "mother country" erupt with a tyrant of a king doing its best to maintain the colonies as subservient.

The humor of the first part has been decreased, and the personal life of George and Martha takes a back seat as this goes on following a family tragedy and issues surrounding Sally Fairfax. Barry Bostwick has grown out of the jokester persona of the younger George, becoming more commanding and serious as his reputation and heroism becomes well known. Such familiar faces (and recognizable voices underneath the powdered wigs) pop up in record speed with Richard Kiley, Robert Stack, John Glover and Patrick Horgan standing out. Stephen Macht makes an unforgettable name just by saying his name: Benedict Arnold. The series has finally gained its footing as American history takes front burner, even though Patty Duke and Jacklyn Smitt are still important as Martha and Sally. Quite a stunning epic now that focus is clear.
