Likeable Music If You Like This Sort Of Music

Tall, balding, 28-year-old Roy Fox and his orchestra play three songs at "The Vitaphone Studios", with occasional breaks to show a man and woman listening to them on the radio. The only interesting one is a light dance version of "Louisiana".

Fox had been playing professionally since the age of 11, most notably with Abe Lyman's band. He seems to have arrived at the title of "the whispering cornetist" by playing with a mute in his instrument. When he does, it sounds syrupy to my ears.

Famous British Dance Band Leafer

I have purchased most of the Warner Archives vintage short discs. Each Christmas I treat myself to a first viewing of one of them. This year it is Vitaphone Varieties Volume 2.Much to my surprise it features Roy Fox with an American Band.Shortly after this he came to England and established himself as one of the leading band leaders in this country in the 1930s.I have a number of LOs of his work.I don't think that this band is as accomplished as the one he led here. The sound falls off badly when there is a vocal as the singer is too far away from the Mike.Clearly the producers are becoming more ambitious as there are cutaway shots so clearly rudimentary editing is now taking place.

Fox was the whispering Cornetist not Coronetist A cornet is a brass instrument similar to a trumpet. A coronet is a crown. And actually Fox is playing a trumpet in this early sound film. He is a bit under recorded in the ensemble - Guess that's why they called him the whispering cornetist.
