Family Guy Review

Warning: Spoilers
The latest Meg-centric episode hammered home one of the common issues when this long-running animated series chooses to go the route of focusing on that much maligned character: they turn to too many cheap shots.

Meg and her arrogant disgusting personality does not really translate to laughs. Obsessing over a french bread pizza with pepperoni on it is just weird, even for her.

But the plot at the heart of "White Meg Can't Jump" was not all that bad. Peter taunting her leading to her succeeding worked as a plot device, and as a Hoosiers fan I loved that they incorporated a lot of the soundtrack in the show tonight.

A rare triumph for Meg

Warning: Spoilers
A rare episode where they can turn Peter insulting Meg into an emotional scene. I thought this was a well-written episode with some good jokes. Not much of a message, but what else do you expect from Family Guy? I suppose one can assume, after watching this episode, that Peter and Lois really do care about Meg.

Meg tries out for a basketball team, and can only seem to play well when Peter insults her. He eventually loses his voice, right as Meg is leading her team to the finals. Peter has been told that he may lose his voice forever if he doesn't rest it for a while. He has to make a decision between risking his voice and heckling Meg, so as to help her succeed. It's a clever conundrum.

One of the best episodes this season.

Where to begin, the main plot with Meg Griffin joining the high school basketball team was hilarious. The plot explored her potential to be successful throughout her father's cynical critique of her team's performance which fueled her willingness to win the games and the moment when Peter lost his voice, she realized that his insults towards her was the driving force of playing basketball well and she actually won the championship. It brilliantly displayed one of the longest running tensions in the series in a much more complex nature than most episode attempts. The subplot with Stewie developing multiple identity issues through watching YouTube conspiracy theories was also entertaining. This episode was super good and it was a nice tribute to Gilbert Gottfried before his death. 10/10.
